Sorry Alan, although I am very much against the death penalty,except in extreme circumstances, I am with CS here.

I think it is the height of hypocrisy, for American citizens to criticise other nations for using Capital punishment.

In this particular case, it seems the woman and her lover planned to murder her husband .....if this is a capital crime in Iran then we have no more right to interfere....than we have in US judicial killings.

The US electorate must put their own house in order.

Well, I'm sorry, but we really don't have a prohibition against puerile and tasteless posts. There are many such posts here at Mudcat that I find offensive (and I get criticized regularly for merely expressing my personal opposition to them), but our policy is to leave them alone and hope people either ignore them or respond constructively to them.

Though our society doesn't even compare in suppression and repression of women, there have been times where "uppity" women have suffered horribly. One, out here in the wild, old west, lost her life:because she owned land the big moneyed guys wanted.

Reading between the lines in her case, it looks a lot like a cooked up charge by a few men who do not like her. I am glad I do not live in Iran, but I think my girlfriend is even happier not to live there!

It sounds like something from the Medievel days, if I was a woman in that society knowing what the penalties are I don't think I would risk something barbaric like this happening. On the otherhand we don't know the character of the dead husband he could have been intolerable to live with, who knows? But then as a woman there she has no voice.

As an aside I sometimes find cases like this troubling. Yes for the obvious reasons, but more-so for the sense of mass moral outrage that certain types of media coverage can generate in 'civilised christian nations' which in fact indulge in much similar practices.

As I mentioned elsewhere, concurrent with publicity over this case in Iran, an American woman Theresa Lewis - who was assessed as having borderline mental retardation and who committed no murders - was executed for 'plotting' to kill her husband.

The men who actually murdered him, received life sentences.

Theresa Lewis is now dead by the electric chair, a form of state sanctioned killing that I personally find no less grisly and barbaric than stoning.

My apologies for taking this thread off-topic somewhat, but I feel it's useful sometimes to consider atrocities committed 'elsewhere' by 'others' those committed closer to home.

I think that to call it being "topped" devalues it considerably.
It also probably renders it unintelligible to our US cousins, as it's a slang term they may not be familiar with.
Ergo, they may not sign the petition.

Sakineh's adultery case is a tragic sham stacked with human rights violations. First, she was to be stoned to death.
