Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: Bob Landry Date: 04 Feb 11 - 02:52 PM gnu, here are a few others Barachois, an Acadian group from Prince Edward Island (I'm not sure of how many stories they told.) Chuck and Albert, former members of Barachois who now tour on their own and told a lot of stories when they toured western Canada last fall. La Bottine souriante, who can provide good examples of Québec footwork (but tell few stories). Yves Lambert et le Bébert (Yves was the accordion player in La Bottine.) |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: Beer Date: 04 Feb 11 - 02:35 PM I take it you're thinking of an old group eh? I've seen "Buddy Wasshis Name and the Other Fellow" do this but they are more recent. ad. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: gnu Date: 04 Feb 11 - 02:06 PM I looked for some examples of Acadian footwork but didn't find any REAL good ones. Beer... can you recall the name of the group that all sit and tell stories as well as play (that really narrows it down eh?) from The Merrytimes? I can picture them in my minds eye. One guy does footwork that is simply dazzling. I found Vishten (great stuff) but I just can't think of the name of the band I am trying to find. |

Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: Bob Landry Date: 02 Feb 11 - 11:56 PM I have a three of his old LPs here that I've been meaning to clean up and convert to CDs. Better get at it. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: Beer Date: 02 Feb 11 - 09:13 PM Duh!! Sorry Gnu on missing the "90" on your thread title. Stupid of me. Here was another great Canuck that would occasionally perform as a guest on Don Messier. Remember the name King Ganam? a great as well. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 07:17 PM Okay. I was hoping to hear some of his good music myself. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: gnu Date: 02 Feb 11 - 06:43 PM m... Nope. Never looked. No need. I know first hand how good he is and I don't need to find links to prove it on accounta his history speaks volumes... a living legend in my books. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 06:24 PM I agree, gnu. I went looking for a good clip but ran out of time and had to go shovel a path to the chicken coop. You have some good tune links? Maeve |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: gnu Date: 02 Feb 11 - 06:21 PM I checked out that YT link, m. That's okay fer "generic NA" radio and TV type stuff but what I know him for is his Acadian and "dirty" Maritime Celtic type fiddling. Those styles are why he won so many championships... besides the three I mentioned above... and why he had such a great and varied career. PS... maybe I shouldn't say this, but, that YT video really sucks compared to what I have seen him do. It's like bubblegum radio without soul made to appease some radio exec who thinks that is what the audience wants. It's good but it's no where near what Ned does best. And, when he does, he ain't wearin no cowboy hat. Sorry to dis that style but I just don't like it compared to the other more "earthy" styles that resonate from my ancestors. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: gnu Date: 02 Feb 11 - 05:54 PM maeve... good link... he actually was the first fiddler to appear on commercial TV in NA. Not that such is an accomplishment but it is a kind of trivia that... well... means something to those that grew up listening to his music. The "interview" with him on the CBC news was short but, at 90 years old, he still seems sharp as a tack. |
Subject: RE: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 04:34 PM Mr. Landry is quite a accomplished fiddler. Thanks, gnu. http://fivebucksonbytor.blogspot.com/2006/10/ned-landry.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCMtPOgJGVk |

Subject: Ned Landry 90! Canuck fiddler. From: gnu Date: 02 Feb 11 - 04:28 PM Gosh. Just saw him on the CBC news. Still fiddlin fine! I shant try to list his accomplishments... more than most any other fiddler I know (3 time NA champion and on and on) and none of them there lads were self taught with a fiddle found in a trash bin at age 9. A serious legend. Always a pleasure to see him play, which I have many times as he is a local lad. |
