Me, too. No matter what he played, I couldn't help seeing him as Joy Boy in Pocketful of Miracles. It was a fine Damon Runyon play ("Apple Annie," I think) and Falk did brilliant Runyon Broadway characters.

I think he got pretty good mileage. Several times on TV I heard him and also read him relate one story - refreshingly different each time...

Seems very early on he was turned down after an audition. He mildly complained that he thought he did pretty well. The producer allowed that he was a good enough actor but for the same money he could hire an actor with _two_ eyed.

RIP

They replayed a 1995 interview with him on Fresh Air today. It was a good one.

I think that's exactly what we all do when we die, Dave. We revert to our original state. This barrel of laughs here is just a temporary excursion.

Seeing as in 'Wings of Desire', Peter, playing himself, is an angel who has opted to become mortal, does this mean that he has now reverted to his original state?

Had the same thought Hawk......Figured it was one of the 'Catters like us who are known by a screen name and their real name but couldn't make that work nor could I make it work on the Glen Campbell thread. I finally figured out that Charley might be in the early stages of Alz himself or possibly just an advanced case of CRS (Can't Remember Shit).............Then I realized I had spent half an hour researching this mystery and realized that perhaps I was more fucked up than Charley!

Aside from being a leading man, he was a great character actor, which is a dying breed.

I used to love those Peter Falk shows. I didn't know about Spaw back then, didn't even know he existed, but I think that Peter Falk's routine closely resembled Spaw's...the shabby clothing, the wretched heap of a car he drove, the shambling walk, bleary eyes, and apparent lack of comprehension of what the hell is going on, the vague mumbling, and the inane questions that seem to lead nowhere...but all the while he is cleverly leading people on to think he's a hopeless dumbass without a clue whilst leading them slowly and surely into a trap from which they cannot possibly escape! Very clever.

The only real difference I can think of, in fact, is this: Spaw IS a hopeless dumbass! ;-D

Anyway, so long, Peter Falk. I hope you find "all the marbles" when you get to Heaven or wherever it is that you're going.

A fine actor. He will truly be missed.

When he was quite young, he lost an eye due to a malignancy. Afterwards, he wore a glass replacement. I remember a story he told many years ago on a TV interview show: As a young man, he was playing in a baseball game and was called "out" by an umpire when he felt he was clearly "safe," having beaten both the ball and the tag by the opposing player. He removed his glass eye and offered it to the umpire, saying "You need this more than I do!"

Some TV stars took charge of their shows enought to make sure that they were always top quality.

Some of the were James Garner, Mary Tyler-Moore, Peter Falk, Carol Burnett and Andy Griffith. All entertainers we could be proud of.

There is nothing great that can be said of Peter Falk that he doesn't deserve. This was an American actor of the highest order. Peter Falk didn't do bad stuff because his presence made the project good.

He is known best for the iconic and quirky character of Lieutenant Columbo which will live forever with anyone who saw even a tiny bit of the series. A complete filmography is below but his roles ranged from small to starring and he maintained that same high degree of excellence til the end of his career. Some of his least known movies are some of his best as well because Falk always created "characters" that fit each part so well.

I have missed him since the Alz was announced and I am glad its over for him now but the American cinema has lost a real giant. And btw, he was one helluvan artist as well!

Good bio/obit HERE

I saw an article with part of a story about his daughter, and poked around to find the rest of the story:

(December 2008) Adopted daughter, Catherine Falk, files for conservatorship, explaining that Falk has been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and, at 81, he no longer recognizes anyone. Later sworn statements from the Falk family, family friends and associates report Catherine has been long-estranged from her father and would not handle his affairs in his best interest.

(January 2009) Shera Danese, Falk's wife of 32 years, files paperwork with the court, including sworn statements from longtime CPA, attorney, friends & family members, stating she is already attending to Falk's affairs, Falk named her as his guardian when first diagnosed with the disease, and long-estranged adopted daughter's attempt to gain conservatorship and control of his affairs is NOT in Falk's best interests.

(May 2009) Shera Danese, his wife, is awarded conservatorship of his affairs.

Sad times in a family. The UK article only gave the daughter's story that she wanted to protect her father, it didn't explore why the wife couldn't do it. Perhaps the daughter sent out promotional materials to support her case?

I thought he died a while ago. I think he had Alzheimers, maybe that was what was announced a while ago? I don't find a cause of death mentioned on IMDb.

Goodbye, Columbo.
