Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Graham Pirt Date: 21 Oct 99 - 10:58 AM Re: my earlier comment about Whitby. I've now spoken to Malcolm Storey (the director)and we have agreed that Mudcat will happen as part of the festival. I will be running a workshop about Mudcat (and other internet issues around folk music) as well as a "gathering". I'll keep you posted about details when they are worked out. Looking forward to seeing you all in August! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Gint Date: 20 Oct 99 - 04:58 PM I'm up for Whitby or anywhere, If it's any help I can offer 'catters space to meet and pitch a tent, c/o the Trolls Bottom at Glastonbury Medieval Festival May 25th - 30th contact eurolog@yahoo.com |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: roopoo Date: 20 Oct 99 - 03:12 PM Fionan, there were definitely novice workshops at Whitby this year: melodeon, whistle and mouth organ coming to mind first off. Unfortunately most details of the week are starting to blur again, as tends to happen! The Tap is a great place, but there would be more room at the Buck, as the Tap is usually heaving for most of the week. Both are central to the town. mouldy |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Micca Date: 20 Oct 99 - 09:26 AM What about Towersey? maybe one of the "un-used"(for music that is) bars of the incomparable "Three Horsehoes". With an Irish session in the public bar and the best IMHO unaccompanied singing in the World in the Barn. For our American and other non-UK friends, It takes place on August Bank Holiday in Oxfordshire and is truly sublime. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Patrish Date: 20 Oct 99 - 08:47 AM i am going to "Raise your Banners" hope to see some of you there. Re: Whitby, the tap and spile is one of the best pubs in Whitby(beer is superb and the landlord and landlady are very fond of folk music) regards Patrish |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: karen jonason Date: 20 Oct 99 - 07:01 AM Are any UK people going to the Raise Your Banners festival at Sheffield, 12-14th November. details of this are available on the net. Holly Near is performing. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Fionan Date: 20 Oct 99 - 05:27 AM Can newbies come too...I'm relatively new to all this and at the moment I'm more of a 'voyeur' than a practitioner, but I'd like to try my hand at a few things...Do they have workshops for complete novices at Whitby..? |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: bill\sables Date: 20 Oct 99 - 04:25 AM If it's goin to be Whitby we will probably be able to get the BUCK INN on the harbour as the Mudcat Tavern where catters could meet. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Sam Hudson Date: 20 Oct 99 - 02:52 AM I'm always at Whitby so count me in too. Let's see if Malcolm will programme a Mudcat singaround at the Albion! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: alison Date: 20 Oct 99 - 01:51 AM Thanks for the invite Bill... I hope to be over there (well Ireland anyway) in august and September. slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: bill\sables Date: 19 Oct 99 - 07:51 PM The UK gathering does not mean only UK catters It would be great if we could see others from Europe and the USA and if anyone is wanting to get out of the Ausie Olympics (Alison) they would be most welcome. We would even like to see Icelanders (Scarpi) The weather here is not always raining and temperatures sometimes do reach the 80s and Yorkshire is a very pretty county (if you can afford the petrol to get there) Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Liam's Brother Date: 18 Oct 99 - 09:26 PM Hi!
I'll be doing a short UK folk club tour next month along with my pal, Bob Conroy. It would be nice to run into a few UK Mudcatters along the way. You can have a look at the itinerary at...
Just in case you want to know what we do and if it may be worth putting the key in the ignition, our web page is...
All the best,

Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Graham Pirt Date: 18 Oct 99 - 07:23 PM I'm speaking to Malcolm this week about next years festival so I'll mention the idea - I've no doubt I can get it put in the programme. Since I'll be at most of the festivals mentioned I'll see you wherever it happens! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Melodeon Date: 18 Oct 99 - 03:54 PM We were thinking of going to Whitby next year instead of Sidmouth (can't afford both) so it would be great to meet up with you all and put faces to names. Just one thing though, do we need thermals in Yorkshire in August? Melodeon |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Oct 99 - 01:35 PM I'd vote for Fylde - but Whitby (where Graham Moore gave over a lot of his workshops last year showing us all his magic laptop version of the Digital Tradition) would do fine. Or Sidmouth. Call it a workshop and get it on the programme. With autographed CD Roms of the Digital Tradition on sale at all the right places. That'd piss of Hary Fox and company (see trace on Mudcat under thread)

Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: bill\sables Date: 18 Oct 99 - 05:54 AM Just heard from Max the UK Mudcat gathering has his blessing but he has not said wether he could come over. It would be great if the US catters could charter a Jumbo and come over en masse. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Eric the Viking Date: 17 Oct 99 - 09:47 AM If the meet is to be at a festival an evening would be better as people have to travel distances. This year I didn't get to the Fyle until the saturday lunchtime. Due to domestic difficulties-NO! not the wife!! Our dog had to undergo emergency surgery on the friday-long story but it cut my time down. So a weekday evening or a Saturday morning before the gigs start might be good. See you all. Cheers. Eric. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: bill\sables Date: 17 Oct 99 - 09:27 AM Jon, I have already written to Max to ask his permission and also to invite him over should this event take place. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: clansfolk Date: 17 Oct 99 - 07:49 AM Like the idea, What about Holding gatherings at other festivals? Fylde Folk Festival is in September - I'm sure I could arrange a room in a pub for a gathering maybe on the Friday afternoon/evening (the first day proper). Let me know and I'll put it to the committee at the next meeting. Pete clansfolk@fyldefolk.freeserve.co.uk website: http://www.fyldefolk.co.uk

Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Oct 99 - 05:33 AM Thanks a lot Llanfair, it would be a gret help if I could arrange to meet you in Chester. Just one other thought: I can't quite remember what was said on the last Mudcat radio show but if this is to happen and be a "Mudcat" gathering, wasn't it suggested that this should be cleared by Max? Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Llanfair Date: 17 Oct 99 - 05:14 AM Jon, you wouldn't need to worry about transport costs, I can always go via Chester or wherever you can get yourself and your kit to. Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Oct 99 - 09:36 PM Money is always the problem with me so the Whitby idea would get my vote as I could combine the gathering with what I believe is a great festval - 2 things for the price of 1! Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Guy Wolff Date: 16 Oct 99 - 07:22 PM Theres a great Pub Hotel right on the "strow" {SP?} in Harogate A rather young crowd was their last December but a nice big space with rooms upstairs! I wish I was there...Go to fountains abby for me..Not far and incredable{NR.Ripon} ...All the best from New England,Guy |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: bobby's girl Date: 16 Oct 99 - 06:36 PM I'd definately go along with Whitby - and would love to see as many of the American/Australian/any-other-country members who wish to visit a very good festival. For those in the know - Malcolm would probably have a heart attack! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Wotcha Date: 16 Oct 99 - 12:21 PM No need to wait, There's a Mudcat "gathering" in Cornwall the week after next! BAZ and yours truly -- The Kuwait (DC-removed) and Cornish Mudcat Connection ... See ya'll (that's "Southern" Cornish) in Cadgwith ... or Morvah or Newbridge ... Cheers Allahamdalla Brian |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Llanfair Date: 16 Oct 99 - 10:32 AM Oh yes! I can get to Harrogate and/or Whitby, or wherever.Harrogate has the fabulous turkish baths, which I'd love to revisit. Just say where, I'll be there. Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Eric the Viking Date: 16 Oct 99 - 07:02 AM The Jug definately! As for Whitby thats an idea. OR what about the Cleckheaton folk festival in July? Harrogate no problem, but where? Anyone know a real friendly pub that would allow it'self to be taken over for a night? Eric. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: selby Date: 16 Oct 99 - 04:54 AM Good idea Bill at the moment I think we can probably get 10 (ten ) into the JUG with a bit of effort on a Wednesday Night. Why not have a date during the Winter months for a gathering there close to M62 etc. Then during the summer lets DO Whitby. That would also give the opportunity should anyone wish for a INTERNATIONAL gathering. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: Sam Pirt Date: 16 Oct 99 - 04:25 AM Whitby sounds good Cheers, Sam |
Subject: RE: BS: UK mudcat gathering From: roopoo Date: 16 Oct 99 - 02:45 AM There would already be several mudcatters at Whitby, so that would be my choice. I think there's another from Grimsby way goes out with the Scratch Morris. mouldy |

Subject: UK mudcat gathering From: bill\sables Date: 15 Oct 99 - 09:16 PM I was chatting with Wildone and Jon Freeman and we thought it might be a good idea to have a UK mudcat gathering. Initial thoughts were possibly near Harrogate as this is supposed to be mid way between Cornwall and Inverness. Or possibly join in with Whitby Festival so as we don't have to organise anything, just turn up. Has anyone got any ideas or comments. Cheers Bill |
