Subject: RE: BS: The Book Burning Party From: Rapparee Date: 19 Jun 12 - 08:39 PM Back when I was working as a librarian I wanted to take all of the books that didn't sell at six or seven book sales and burn them. I was going to send invitations to the Intellectual Freedom people at the American Library Association. (I'm talking things like a 1958 arithmetic book, a dictionary that was falling apart, stuff like that.) |

Subject: RE: BS: The Book Burning Party From: Bobert Date: 19 Jun 12 - 07:04 PM Reminds me of a "Puppy Burn" we organized back in the 60's... Yup, we put posters up all over campus saying we were going th burn a puppy and got a couple thousand angry people to attend what was an anti-war rally in disguise... Told them, "Hey, you came here today over your concern for the life of a puppy... We want to tell you what is happening in Vietnam..."... Thanks for posting this Wesley... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: The Book Burning Party From: GUEST,saulgoldie Date: 19 Jun 12 - 05:01 PM Funny thing about that "elephant" book. Seems the Democrats, of which I think Lakoff is one (from the Democratic wing, no less) don't seem to have read it. Or at least, they don't ACT like they have. But the Republicans have! Saul |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Burning Party From: Don Firth Date: 19 Jun 12 - 04:24 PM 451° F. Ray Bradbure LIVES!! Don't let the philstines frame the arguement (talking "taxes" in this case). Frame YOUR argument around what's really at stake. The availability of books. George Lakoff has written an excellent book entitled Don't Think of an Elephant, in which he explains what framing is all about. And he also points out that the conservative forces in this country maintain several well-funded think tanks whose job it is to frame arguments, so, if people are willing to use their terminology (i.e., taxes rather than books), their argument is about 90% won. Don't let them get away with it! Don Firth |
