It's been established that "The Tipperary Christening" is not the song requested in the original post in the thread. However, since "Tipperary Christening" was mentioned (and since I went to quite some trouble to find it before I realized it wasn't the requested song), I thought I'd post it.
You'll find it in this thread.
But we still don't have complete lyrics for the song that was originally requested in this thread. Can anyone post them?
Connie, which song is it that you know? If you'd like to sing it to me, contact me by e-mail.

P.S. I'd be happy to sing it to anyone who would find it helpful to hear the tune.

I've been looking for this song for years as well, Googling it every once in a while and hoping it would come up. This is the first time!

Joe Curran, are you from Troy? If so, you may be my father Matt's cousin. He used to sing this song to us when we were kids. I think I remember him saying that it was on a 78 that his father had.

This may turn out to be some sort of a record for a 'Cat thread. Over seven years and still no answer - amazing!

Of course, I missed the earlier postings entirely. I was busy walking, feeding and playing with my pet peeve so perhaps I may be forgiven. It would be lovely to finaly learn what the hell this "song" is.

I think the last line is actually 'Do da dum de dum day".

Hi:

I've been attempting to track down this same song for some time.
How well I remember the day I was christened
the water was cold and I let out a yell!
Old Jake McGuire was up in the choir (or or)
Playing the organ and it sounded like...
Dee da dum do da dum die da dum day
Dee da dum do da dum die da dum day
De da dum do da dum
De da dum do da dum
De da dum do da dum
    Die da dum day

Have you had any luck finding the rest of the words?

John,
I might agree with you me being a dog.. but since I last visted this particular thread and having had my computer stolen and hence losing lots of invaluable material, I would be quite chuffed to be able to track this particular song down.. Do I now say Woof..Woof..??

Cheers
Mick

You had me going for a while there.. I "found" I had a copy of Tipperary Christening which as you quite rightly say, is not the song I'm looking for.. I was wondering if you had a different version than mine.. but I see not... thanks for your time and trouble in helping to track this wee timourous song down

Well Mick I was wrong! The lyrics to Tipperary Christening bear no relation to the snippet you submitted. I'll post Tipperary Christening as soon as I can. In the meantime your request still has me enthralled - I have seen the lyrics quite recently as I recall the similarity in tone to Paterson's Bush Christening. I'll just have to work those brain cells a bit harder. Sorry for the misinformation. Regards, John

John
A thousand thanks.. that's one series of books I never bothered to buy because most of the material I already had in other volumes.. okay call me mean, but I hate forking out hard earned cash on a book where you are only going to get one new song at best..
Mary.. I do indeed know who you love, as indeed I know you know who my true affections lie with, we are fortunate in being able to share such confidences with each other..
Margo, I hope it was the reference to the "menage le trois" you thought kinky, as opposed to my love for you and not wishing to dilute it in anyway, I should add to all the wonderful people here on the mudcat.. though I may get you to explain more re the nautical reference.. are you hiding more than you're telling?..
And Sophocleese I could hear the "stage directions" in your "voice".. a long and prosperous career in the art of acting awaits you.. if you're not already involved even at the amateur dramatics level.. believe me.. you need to be treading the stage.. as indeed we all do, if only we knew it... Life is but one major play..
I'm glad I have such a strong cast around me here on the cat..
I wish you all the best of best of New Years and hope all your dreams and wishes come true..
Mick

I bet that was one of the songbooks I had out of the library...let's only hope it wasn't the San Francisco library seeing as how I've moved....

I'll check for you Mick and let you know if I can retrieve it...

Thanks John in Brisbane!

Mick, this is my first day back from the Woodford Festival, and I'm pleased to say that I can help you with this one. It's called The Tipperary Christening and lyrics and tune can be found in Ballads From The Pubs Of Ireland, Vol 1, James N Healy, Page 16. I don't have a copy handy at the moment, but if no one else volunteers I can get it to you soon. Regards, John.

UH-HEM! Tush Tush Mick! (Or in American English, "Tisk Tisk!!).....

Okay, I've only just started looking for this one...don't know why it sounds familiar...perhaps it's because it sounds like a great song! (Almost said "tune" myself)

I know who I love...

Soph (may I cal you that.. I know your cousin John.. brilliant comic actor)
No you didn't offend. I have to own up to falling under the post Chrimble blues. i.e. the anti-climax of it all and winding you up somewhat..
I do notice though that seeing as it's only you ,me and Margo adding to this thread, have we created the mudcat's forst "menage les trois".. yeah I know my French spelling is awful..
I can't spell in English either..
Thanks for taking the trouble in keeping this thread alive
Love you all..
Mick

What really peeved me Mick was that I couldn't help. I don't know much but I like now and again to get something right. It sounds alike a fun one. I hope I didn't offend I was just trying to be clear.

Well we're pretty simple here in the backwoods of Leicestershire and often utilise the word tune, when as you quite rightly point out, it should be song.. but then if I was after the melody I would be asking you to id the music
Why call a spade a spade when you can call it an agricultural implement and confuse as many people as possible.
We may be simple, but alas life isn't (that's the thought for today by the way)..
Thanks for pointing out the errors of my ways Sophocleese.
Mick

I think radriano's peeve was in calling something that had words but with no given melody a 'tune'. The distinction is often made between a specific combination of words and melody called a 'song' and melody without words, or with many different sets of associated words, called a 'tune'. Its not a peeve of mine but when I hear someone ask about a tune I expect to hear melody but when they ask about a song I expect to hear words. So it was a little surprising to me to see words and no melody with the thread name you had given.

Old Jake McGuire was up in the choir
Playing the organ, it sounded like ....

Thanks
