I don't know whether you've seen this, but it pertains to various time signatures and gives examples. Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 15 May 20 - 05:42 AM Before I wrote this tune a music teacher friend advised treating each bar as either 3/4 + 2/4 or vice-versa. I found it a good way to get a grip on the timing. I've dallied with 7/4 (3/4+4/4) but haven't produced anything worth playing yet. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 14 May 20 - 01:59 PM Thanks John. I didn't know until a couple of days ago that there is a dance called a five-step waltz and tunes that fit the dance are also called five-step waltzes. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: John P Date: 14 May 20 - 12:48 PM Nice job of making it "read" as a waltz, even though it's in 5. Very natural sounding. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: leeneia Date: 13 May 20 - 03:12 PM Sometimes. But if they make people think a song isn't there when it is, that's bad. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 11 May 20 - 06:05 PM Moments of silence are good Leeneia! |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: leeneia Date: 11 May 20 - 12:51 PM "Leave the rests in." That's good to know. For those not used to MIDI and NWC, I will explain that the program has a useful tool called "automatic bar lines", which puts the bar lines into a piece one is transcribing. (Of course, you have to tell the program what the time signature is ahead of time.) Automatic Bar Lines is good at letting you know if you missed a note or put in an extra one. If a song begins with pick-up note(s), you have to put rests in front of them to fill up the first measure, otherwise Automatic Bar Lines just puts the pick-up notes in the first measure, thus screwing everything up royally. Chords fall in funny places and there are lots of ties, and notes go over bar lines when they shouldn't. When this happens, click the undo button immediately. Later when the song is all done and ready for public view, take the initial rests out. I failed to do that with Around the Garden, which is why my link has a moment of silence at first. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 20 - 07:52 PM Better to leave the rests in, I think. Noteworthy is not the only music program that deals with pickup notes with less than total grace. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 10 May 20 - 07:35 PM I only tend to use two instrument voices on midis. I use piano to write and arrange as it is clear and easier to tell if harmonies are right. The other is flute which I use to tell if a tune flows well. I don't, for instance, use mandolin even on a mandolin part because there are so many audio effects in it that it clouds the clarity. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: leeneia Date: 10 May 20 - 01:34 PM That's it. I doesn't start right away because I forget to remove the rests before the pick-up notes. Thanks, Joe. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: leeneia Date: 10 May 20 - 01:34 AM I did it for recorder and harp so the two lines would sound different. I hope Joe posts it soon. I tried dropping the lower part an octave, but the magic was gone. Isn't this it? -Joe- Click to play (joeweb) |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 09 May 20 - 06:39 PM Thank you Leeneia, "It floats" is a really positive comment because that's exactly what I wanted it to do. Please do share it. I'd love to hear the interpretations that other musicians might make of it. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Newn 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: leeneia Date: 09 May 20 - 05:03 PM I like it, Peter. It floats. Somehow I failed to see that you had made a video, so I made a MIDI and asked Joe to post it. It's not a wasted effort, because people who work with MIDI's might need to change the key or something. I think I'll share it with my more-talented friends who play flute and harp. Click to play (joeweb) |

Subject: Tune Add: New 5/4 tune - tell me what you think! From: Captain Swing Date: 08 May 20 - 07:06 PM I wrote this tune about four years ago as an experiment to see what I could do with 5/4 time. It's been gathering dust for some time so I decided to give it an airing. I didn't even have a name for it until my wife suggested 'Around The Garden' as I'd spent this morning filming the video there. So here's a link - CC welcome: Around The Garden |
