Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Soldier's Song (Dave Gibb) From: vectis Date: 27 May 24 - 10:34 PM The Irish National Anthem is also called A Soldier's Song We'll sing a song, a soldier's song, With cheering rousing chorus, As round our blazing fires we throng, The starry heavens o'er us; Impatient for the coming fight, And as we wait the morning's light, Here in the silence of the night, We'll chant a soldier's song. Chorus: Soldiers are we Whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come From a land beyond the wave. Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land Shall shelter the despot or the slave. Tonight we man the "bearna baoil", In Erin's cause, come woe or weal 'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal, We'll chant a soldier's song. In valley green, on towering crag, Our fathers fought before us, And conquered 'neath the same old flag That's proudly floating o'er us. We're children of a fighting race, That never yet has known disgrace, And as we march, the foe to face, We'll chant a soldier's song. Chorus Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale! The long watched day is breaking; The serried ranks of Inisfail Shall set the Tyrant quaking. Our camp fires now are burning low; See in the east a silv'ry glow, Out yonder waits the Saxon foe, So chant a soldier's song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Soldier's Song (Dave Gibb) From: Ian Hendrie Date: 27 May 24 - 02:39 PM "Looks like a poor rewrite of Donovan's Universal Soldier." I don't agree but for years my ambition, as a now retired Chemistry teacher, was to produce what would definitely have been a poor rewrite of Donovan's classic. My efforts never got much further than the title which was "Universal Solvent". (This may be amusing to 0.01% of the Chemistry teachers out there) |

Subject: Lyr Add: Soldier's Song (Dave Gibb) From: RunrigFan Date: 17 Mar 22 - 02:00 PM A Soldier’s Song ©Dave Gibb 2009 PRS/MCPS I have fought for survival and fought for beliefs I’ve been fighting since time first began Since we learned to walk upright I’ve been marching to war It’s a curse that’s the burden of man I’ve been hailed as a hero and damned as a fool By those I have sworn to defend But no matter how far or how long I’m away I just want to go back home again I may not return in the way we had hoped And not in the way we had dreamed But if all that remain are the memories you hold Then that will be all right by me I fought in the heather on wild windswept hills I have fought through the deserts of Spain I fought for Raj – where my body lies still And I fought through the Normandy Rain I have fought as a hero and fought as a fool I’ve cried and I’ve died all alone But no matter wherever this body may fall The spirit will find its way home I may not return in the way we had hoped And not in the way we had dreamed But if all that remain are the memories you hold Then that will be all right by me from the album Goldscaur https://davegibb.bandcamp.com/track/a-soldiers-song |
