Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aux Oiseaux Traditional French Folk Song From: Mrrzy Date: 20 Sep 24 - 02:12 PM Boy does this remind me two separate French folk songs! En passant par la Lorraine avec mes sabots and La noce des oiseaux, where the lark (l'alouette) and the finch (le pinson) are trying to get married And the children's songs I grew up singing kept the bawdy parts in, if they were in French. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aux Oiseaux Traditional French Folk Song From: Monique Date: 15 Sep 24 - 12:23 PM It's mostly known as "Sur la route de Dijon". You can find the lyrics on Chants populaires français, on French Wikipedia, on Lyrics Translate with an English translation (btw "Parait que tout le bataillon..." -last verse but one- translates as "They say/tell that..." not "It seems that..."). SNIP "On the Road to Dijon" is a military march from the 17th or 18th century, which became very popular in France in the 19th century. It was taken up by the military during the colonial wars. SNIP(from the 1st link) SNIP "The children's version generally removes the verse "Parait que tout le bataillon/La belle digue di/La belle digue don/Consola la Marjolaine" because of the bawdy nature of this passage."
