Subject: Lyr Add: In Praise of Grainne Mhaol
From: GUEST,Oisín Cabháin
Date: 04 Dec 24 - 07:56 AM

I was recently at the Wexford Fleadh Ceol na hEireann and heard a man sing this song which I loved. I've found an old recording and have trasnscribed the lyrics the best i could. Any edits or corrections welcome. Further info on its origins also

In Praise of Grainne Mhaol

Grainne Mhaol And Her Lovely Four Green Fields

______________________________
Last night as I lay slumbering
In Philadelphia town
I dreamt I stood on Taras hill
For to view the plains around
I saw a host of Erin's sons
And daughters fair and true
From north and south
From east and west
They came marching into view

They came with hum of pipe and drum
Some came with sword and shield
And they sang the praise of Grainne Mhaol
And her lovely four green fields

From Munster came great bards of fame
And scholars of reknown
They were led by brave McSwiney
From corks own rebel town
There was music rare from the men of Clare
And from Kerry's happy throng
The fair maids from the Deise
And the men of Slievenamon

Chorus

Well from Roscommons side
They marched in pride
The legions of the west
And sligo men with voices keen
And love of music blessed
Men from Mayo
Who faced the foe
And crushed the Tyrants down
All brave and true
From Leitrim too
And the girls from Galway town

Chorus

The Leinster throng all brave and strong
They came marching in their turn
There was brave O Moore and Michael Dwyer
And faith with you O Byrne
I saw brave Pearse and Connolly
They were young and in their prime
And the Wexford men from hill and glen
Came marching side by side

Chorus

From Foyle and Bann
Came manys the man
To sing of Ulsters pride
Of colmchille and sweet Cavehill
And the famed blackwater side
Eoin Roe O'Neill led the field
With O Donnell to the fore
And brave men all
From Creggan and Falls
Who still are standing sure

Chorus
