Dory is still around and a recent interview with her by Laura Barton can be found here - http://www.thelipster.com/articles/2846935

Her albums can be found second hand and at least some are available on cd. She has two existing volumes of autobiography which are, I think, out of print but worth tracking down. The first is Midnight Baby and the second is Bogtrotter. Reading them and you get a flavour of what we would now call an abusive childhood and which directly informs the lyrics on her first two albums, On My Way to Where and Mythical Kings and Iguanas.

I had the great pleasure of seeing her perform in Glasgow around 1977 with more or less the same set I think as the Live at Carnegie Hall LP.

I still occasionally sing it and liked her albums - always liked Angels and Devils as a song but could never work out how I could sing it as a man

I also have the vinyl, at least two, and probably three Previn albums (all stored away). I was a real fan of her voice and lyrics. (Gotta get a vinyl player!)

copied and pasted from GUEST post with no handle

Mythical kings and iguanas

i have flown
to star-stained heights
on bent and battered wings
in search of
mythical kings
mythical kings
sure that everything of worth
is in the sky and not the earth
and i never learned
to make my way
down
down
down
where the iguanas play
i have ridden
comet tails
in search of magic rings
to conjure
mythical kings
mythical kings
singing scraps of angel-song
high is right and low is wrong
i never taught
myself to give
down
down
down
where the iguanas live

astral walks i try to take
i sit and throw i ching
aesthetic bards
and tarot cards
are the cords to which i cling
don't break my strings
(i wish you would)
or i will fall
(i wish i could
i wish i could
i wish i could)

curse the mind
that mounts the clouds
in search of mythical kings
and only
mystical things
mystical things
cry for the soul
that will not face
the body as an equal place
and i never learned
to touch for real
or fell the things
iguanas feel
down
down
down
where they play
teach me
teach me
teach me
reach me

Bald Eagle et al,

Wow! In less than 24 hours you folk have made the world so much smaller, with generosity, kindness and peace. One obscure request brings everyone together in knowledge, curiosity, and creativity. And free! Thanks folks!

"Mary Cecelia Brown came to town on the Malibu bus
She climbed to the top of the Hollywood sign
And with the smallest possible fuss,
She jumped off the letter 'H'
because she could not become a star,
She died in less than a minute and a half,
She looked a bit like Hedy Lamarr."

I meant to say abover that I know the tune to Mythical Kings and Iguanas (one of the albums is called this, too) and what happens behind the words in Charlie's link in no way resembles it.
Blessings,
Barbara

I also have this song on vinyl somewhere, and as I'm in the process of copying a lot of my collection into Mp3 format at the minute, I'll hunt it out also.
I have 'Mary C. Brown and the Hollywood sign', 'Live at Carneigie Hall', and that album (which I forget the name of at the minute), which includes such gems as 'Michael, Michael, Superman'..(muscle-bound and super-tanned).

I'll un-earth them over the weekend.

B.

I used to love this song, and I have the album somewhere. Here's what I remember of the lyrics:

Mythical Kings and Iguanas
Dory Previn

I have flown to star stained heights
On bent and borrowed wings
In search of mythical kings, mythical kings
Sure that every thing of worth
Was in the sky and not the earth
And I never learned to make my way
Down, down, down, where the iguanas play.

She had at least two albums, as I recall, including a very funny song about Jesus' baby sister, and one about screaming on the LA freeway. Glad to hear there are still some around as mine have long since grown legs and walked off.
Curiously, the first link Charlie posted, above, has the words BUT NOT the tune to "Mythical Kings". As far as I can tell the background asian sounding tune will not match the words. There IS, however, at the second of his links, an address for a songbook, so there is hope. Or call me up and I'll sing it for you. It was one of my favorite songs.
Blessings,
Barbara

From http://www.sonicnet.com/artists/ai_bio.jhtml?ai_id=14452: BIOGRAPHY

b Dory Langdon, 27 October 1937, Woodbridge, New Jersey, USA, she was the daughter of a musician who became a child singer and dancer in New Jersey, graduating to musical theatre as a chorus line member. Her abilities as a songwriter next brought Langdon work composing music for television programmes. After moving to Hollywood, she met and married André Previn in 1959, the year in which he composed the tune 'No Words For Dory'. Now a lyricist for movie soundtracks, Dory Previn worked with Andre, Elmer Bernstein and others on songs for such films as Pepe, Two For The Seesaw, and Valley Of The Dolls, whose theme tune was a big hit for Dionne Warwick in 1967. By now the Previns had separated and in the late 60s Dory turned to more personal lyrics, publishing a book of poems before launching a recording career with United Artists. Produced by Nik Venet, her early albums were noted for angry, intimate and often despairing material like 'The Lady With The Braid' and 'Who Will Follow Norma Jean ?'. The title track of Mary C. Brown & The Hollywood Sign was based on a true story of a suicide attempt and was turned by Previn into a stage musical. In 1974, she left United Artists. for Warner Brothers Records where Joel Dorn produced her 1976 album. In that year she also published her memoirs, Midnight Baby.

Dory Previn was a very good singer-songwriter from the late-60s-early-70s. She was married to Andre Previn, who dumped her for Mia Farrow. (What goes 'round, comes 'round--Mia got dumped for Soon-Yi Previn, but that's another story.)

After the break-up, and probably because of it, Dory Previn had a "nervous breakdown," and in the process of working out her life, she created amazing songs that looked honestly and deeply at her problem and touched the hidden recesses of the soul. Her song about Mia Farrow, "Beware of Young Girls, twenty and four, beware of young girls, who come to the door, delivering daisies with delicate hands." cuts to the heart of the matter. "Mister Whisper" is a great evocation of what it's like to go crazy.

Mythical Kings and Iguanas may be found here. One level up, here more of her song lyrics may be found.

I think it's been a while since she recorded but I remember that she used to be married to Andre Previn. She played and composed on the piano and was well thought of by the critics for whatever that's worth. I only heard a couple of her songs. Try www.allmusic.com. They might have some info.

Bald Eagle--

Haven't heard the song, but it's an intriguing title. Amazon.com has it on three of Dory Previn's albums--Mythical Kings & Iguanas/Reflections in a Mudpuddle; Mythical Kings (UK version); and Live at Carnegie Hall. Also there's some interesting info about her in the reviews for those albums.

I tried a Web search to see if I could find lyrics, but no luck--maybe someone knows a better way?

Lin

When I was young and had more spare cash than bringing up a young family leaves me now, I went to several Dave Burland concerts (mid-to-late 70s). In each, he sang a song called (if memory serves) Mythical Kings and Iguanas which he attributed to Dory (Dorry? Dorrie?) Previn and which I've never come across before or since.

Anyone know the words, tune, or anything about it or her?
