Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Bill D Date: 21 Sep 97 - 09:53 PM hmmmmm...I personally am a computer novice who just downloads Netscape like they tell me...and the chatroom has worked for me fine since the first day....maybe I just held my mouth right!!! Still wonder if the problem has anything to do with Mac vs. PC..(Max suggested that Macs might have some problems.....) anyway, I hope everyone gets it working soon...it looks like we have a quorum! |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Speed-1 Date: 21 Sep 97 - 05:20 AM I Just LOVE what you've done with your chat room decor, dahling, monochrome gray is just TRESchic, n'est pas? And signing on in that fog, well, I must tell you, the intrigue of typing with absolutely no idea if anything is transmitting - what a thrill? Please, if I promise to be good, can I get in SOON???????!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Possum Dave Date: 20 Sep 97 - 08:06 PM I've tried and failed to get into the chat room as others have reported.Like Suibhan, I get the Null Pointer message and a gray square that I can't write in. Are there instructions as to minimal browser requirements, etc.? I'm using Netscape 3.0-- It seems as though I'm battling a lost cause. Can anyone at this site assist? |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Peter T. Date: 20 Sep 97 - 04:43 PM Suibhan - semaphore is the only solution for the rest of us (cf. the Monty Python version of Wuthering Heights)! Yours, Peter |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Suibhan Date: 20 Sep 97 - 03:29 PM Sorry to bore everyone with this - I can't get in the chat room. How do I clear this Null Pointer thing? I am using Netscape 3.0 and have run Java Applets before. Would love to talk to someone! |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Peter T. Date: 19 Sep 97 - 05:08 PM Well, I am still unable to get in, and I seem to have the same problem. So there is company outside the chat room. Perhaps there needs to be a corridor? Yours, Peter |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Jon W. Date: 19 Sep 97 - 10:18 AM Joe - I'm on Netscape navigator 4.03 Lidi - It doesn't cost anything though donations are welcome. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Lidi Date: 19 Sep 97 - 07:19 AM Does it cost anything to become a member? I´m asking this coz obviously you can´t join the chatroom if you are not a member.... Cheers Lidi |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Jamas Date: 19 Sep 97 - 04:40 AM Have I tried it? yes - twice - empty on both times - great for singing - the emptiness echoes - Whilst I was there I was taken short and had to use the loo. Unfortunately, I discovered too late - no @#%&* paper! I remembered my youthful days back in Wales where I used to stand on a street corner selling newspapers. I yelled "SOUTH WALES ARGUS" - and I used the "Echo". I'd give it a while if I were you.

Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: alison Date: 19 Sep 97 - 04:01 AM hi Joe I didn't mean to accuse you. I was just straigtening things out for those people out there who might have misconstrued your meaning. Just between you and me I'm heading back there ..........I think that time with you was probably the last time I saw anyone in there. Slainte alison |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Sep 97 - 02:22 AM Hey, Jon - what version of what browser are you using? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Jon W. Date: 18 Sep 97 - 08:32 PM I emptied my history, and caches both disk and memory, but got same result when I went back to the chat room. I did notice that the people counter went from 2 to 3 when I came back out - I wonder if the chat room thought I was there. Hey you guys in the chat room, have you ever seen "Jon W. is here" come up? |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Sharon Date: 18 Sep 97 - 07:59 PM I knnow it exists. I had a few nice conversations with small groups when it began. Now I try around 4PM. 8PM and 10PM. It's always empty. Wish we could get a meeting time arranged. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Sep 97 - 07:32 PM Well, Jon W. you can do like I did and empty your "Temporary Internet Files" folder (MSIE), or whatever they call it in Netscape. In MSIE, go to "Options", then "Advanced," then "Settings," then "Empty folder." I did that, and then I couldn't connect to Digital Tradition for a week after I logged off. But I had a very nice chat with Alison in Australia, who then accused me of ruining her reputation. ;) Or, you could do like Bill in Alabama and pretend that chat doesn't exist..... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Bill in Alabama Date: 18 Sep 97 - 03:31 PM I am convinced that the chat room is a myth, like the Big Rock Candy Mountain; it's a place that we want so badly to believe in that we actually think it exists. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Jon W. Date: 18 Sep 97 - 01:06 PM Well I'm resurrecting this old thread because I still can't get the Chat to run. I'm using Netscape Navigator 4.03, have java and javaScript enabled, and have successfully run one other Java applet. However when I try the chat I get (eventually) a screen with a gray rectangle in it, a status line that says "java applet initialized", and if I go to the Java Console window, I see a "null pointer exception" message. And sometimes more than one. But no place to type, no messages from others, no nothing. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Frank in the swamps Date: 10 Sep 97 - 12:24 AM I tried the chat room for the first time tonight,my browser told me I'd made some kind of fatal error and threw me out. Shut down Netscape in fact. I've been away for about a month and don't know how long this feature has been available, but I would imagine it'll take a while to get folks used to a chat schedule. I'm usually not free to go online until about 4:00 am eastern seaboard time (U.S.). Also, given the nature of many of these threads, live chat may not be all that popular, much of what is discussed here tends to send us running off to our personal libraries to check out lyrics etc. Still, I want to meet some of you "live." Cheers, Frank. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Sep 97 - 05:44 PM I went to Chat Thursday or Friday and actually found Alison from Australia there, and then three or four other people from the US joined us. Trouble is, I had to empty my MS Internet Explorer "history" folder to clear the null pointer error. I guess that also cleared my Mudcat home page, and I couldn't find my way back here for four days. Ah, and a long four days it was! I even read an actual book.....It's nice to be back. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Bill D Date: 09 Sep 97 - 05:37 PM it doesn't have a separate URL...it is just a Java program runnig here at the site...you need Netscape 3.11 or 4 to access it.(or IE 3.?)...to get to it you just click the text under the 'search' box...where it says 'chat room' |

Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 08 Sep 97 - 07:27 PM Maybe what we should do is plan a certain time, and be there at that time to chat. I can't get it to scroll up or down. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: BBJ Date: 06 Sep 97 - 08:53 AM I found it right after my last post, sitting right there when I scrolled to the right a little. Just needed to open my window a little further. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: BBJ Date: 06 Sep 97 - 08:45 AM Maybe I'm more dense than most, but I can't find the chat room. How do I get in to try it out? Everyone else is commenting on it's features, what they like, what can be improved, And I can't find the door. I sure feel stupid asking! |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Earl Date: 05 Sep 97 - 11:49 PM I was there last Friday and actually had some conversations. Alas, those days are gone. |
Subject: RE: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Shula Date: 04 Sep 97 - 10:31 PM Been there twice. Dark and empty. Felt wierd. May try again in a few hours when the computer will be free. B.L.N.T., eh? Shula |
Subject: CHAT ROOM - Have you tried it? From: Sharon Date: 04 Sep 97 - 10:20 PM Our chat room is one, if not THE best around. That's why I'm so disappointed when I go there at prime time and find it empty. Other chats are overflowing, but they lack the warm caring people we find here at mudcat. And ours is so easy to use......others are much more cumbersome. Enter the room...... if we all keep trying we may fill it some time. |
