Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side (2 songs) From: GUEST,Liberated Date: 23 Feb 16 - 02:46 PM Felecia wrote the song in the spring/summer of 1990 after being inspired by a black minister preaching on Jerry Falwell's TV program. How John Reinhardt's song came to be that same year (fall), the question should be directed to Mr. Rodney Sexton from Gainesville GA area. He will know. The story behind Little Jan's version is she wanted to cut Felecia out entirely and just take the song. When Felecia balked, Jan decided to write her own version so her name would appear on the song. After a compromise Jan came up with "On my Mothers Side" and gave Felecia a third credit. Liberty loved Wendy and sang with them several times. I am positive he would not have approved if he'd known but Felecia never like the "business" side of singing so she let it go. Not much to do after that but get what you can. The original version on You tube by "Liberty" is the version that started it all. |

Subject: ADD: On My Mother's Side From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Mar 13 - 06:51 PM I found one more song, this one on a recording by Wendy Bagwell & the Sunliters. I take it this is a variant of the Felicia Shifflett song. ON MY MOTHER'S SIDE (words & music by: Jan Buckner, John Turner, Felecia Shiflett) Joseph and Mary went searching three days For the Son they had raised; They found Him teaching in the temple, And this He to say: [spoken] I'm doing my Father's business. [sung] I'm doing my Father's business The elders had never heard Such wisdom so they asked, how, when, and where Who is this child with the words? [spoken] Son, what's your name? [sung] On my mother's side, my name is Jesus, On my Father's side, Emmanuel. [spoken] Son, how old are you? [sung] On my mother's side, I'm twelve years, On my Father's side, I've always been. [spoken] And where were you born? [sung] On my mother's side, I was born in Bethlehem, On my Father's side, the New Jerusalem. [spoken] What are your plans, son? [sung] On my mother's side, I will be crucified, On my Father's side, in three days I will rise, I will rise, and sit at my Father's side. [reprise - sung] On my mother's side, my name is Jesus, On my Father's side, Emmanuel. On my mother's side, I will be crucified, On my Father's side, in three days I will rise, I will rise, I will rise, I will rise. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side (2 songs) From: GUEST,Guest Date: 13 Aug 11 - 01:29 PM Just want to say that I don't care who wrote the song, it is one of the most moving ones I've ever heard. As for the Methodist and Catholic who said they would not want it used in their services, I think anyone who really listened to the words would disagree with them. Our Methodist Church would use it any time and most especially at Easter. Joe said it's most suited for one of those country-western born again churches....all I can say is I'm glad I belong to one of them. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side (2 songs) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Aug 11 - 12:46 AM Guest AKS: Before alleging a "blatant rip-off" you should read the earlier message from another guest, which lays out a completely believable scenario about how two people heard the same sermon (or two versions of the same sermon) and independently had the idea to turn the theme of the sermon into a song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side (2 songs) From: GUEST,GUEST - aks Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:49 PM Did a little research and found the following information regarding "On My Father's Side" and "On My Mother's Side": "On My Father's Side" was copyrighted on 9/21/1990, as written by John L. Reinhardt. "On My Mother's Side" was copyrighted on 3/13/1992 by Felecia Shiflett Music, with words & music by: Jan Buckner, John Turner, Felecia Shiflett. There is NO copyright for "On My Father's Side" by Felecia Shiflett Music - - although they claim credit for the song with BMI. If you look over the various lyrics listed above for the two songs, it appears to be very clear that "On My Mother's Side" is nothing more than a blatant rip-off of "On My Father's Side". If you'd like to write to Felecia Shiflett Music for the lyrics and sheet music for "On My Mother's Side", you can reach them at: Felecia Shiflett Music 48 Stone Mill Walk Griffin, GA. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side (2 songs) From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Jul 11 - 06:50 PM Repertoire.BMI.com lists 4 different songs (or tunes) called ON MY FATHER'S SIDE: One was written by John L. Reinhardt, Jr., and published by Chestnut Mound Music. One was written by Felecia Shiflett and published by Felecia Shiflett Music. One was written by Louie Nettles and published by Love Peace and Happiness Music. One was written by Gary W. Duty and published by Carried Away Music. In addition, Repertoire.BMI.com lists a song called ON MY MOTHER'S SIDE, which is credited to Jan Buckner, Felecia Shiflett, and John Turner. It was published by Canaanland Music and by Felecia Shiflett Music. ...and a song called MY FATHER'S SIDE, which written by Harry Reynolds and published by Universal Songs of Polygram International, Inc. The U.S. Copyright Office says Reinhardt's song ON MY FATHER'S SIDE was published as an audio cassette in 1990. Allmusic.com says that Shiflett's song ON MY FATHER'S SIDE appeared on 2 albums by the Village Singers: "There's a Great Day Coming" (1999) and "When I Get There" (2002). The Reinhardt song, sung by The Reinhardts, can be seen and heard in a video at YouTube. The lyrics that they sing are very close to the lyrics that I copied from the Southern Gospel News web site and posted above. YouTube has recordings of the Shiflett song sung by The Village Singers, Liberty, The Barn Again Gang [sic], and many others. The words are close to those posted by Grover above. Judging by the number of amateur recordings posted a YouTube (which I have not listed), I'd say the Shiflett song is far more popular than the Reinhardt song. I haven't found any recordings of the songs by Nettles, Duty, or Reynolds. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On My Father's Side From: GUEST Date: 09 Jan 08 - 11:37 PM I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Warren Goad and I am the guitar player and bass singer for the Village Singers. I found this forum while doing a search on Google for "On My Father's Side Lyrics". I get at least 2 or 3 emails a week asking for the lyrics to this song. I don't give them out due to legal issues with the copyright, but I wanted a way to point them to the words without giving them out. The lyrics as to the way we sing it are closest to what Grover posted. The song that little Jan Buckner wrote that sang with Wendy is called ON MY MOTHER'S SIDE. Both songs were inspired by a sermon given by a black minister that Felecia was attending. Jan's minister was also attending and liked the message so much that he came back and gave it at Jan's church. One sermon told by 2 different ministers inspired 2 songs. I have never heard of The Reinhardts. We got the song from a group called "Twice as Nice" from Texarkana. They no longer travel or perform together. The Homestead Pickers got the song from us when we played the gazebo theater in Silver Dollar City. Great folks. The song got a boost when the Bott Radio Network played the song for the Christmas season several years ago. I am not sure but they may play it every year around Christmas. Hope this clears up a few things. Thanks Warren Link added by Joe Offer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Shp7oDgNXk (Village Singers Recording) |

Subject: Lyr Add: ON MY FATHER'S SIDE (John Reinhardt) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Oct 07 - 07:51 AM Lyrics copied from Southern Gospel News forum: ON MY FATHER'S SIDE (John L. Reinhardt, Jr.) 1. Jesus sat there in the temple, just a lad of early age, Talking with the scholars who were utterly amazed. They marveled how a child could ever be this wise And when they asked how old He was, I'm sure it took them by surprise When Jesus said, "On Mother's side I'm only twelve years old, CHORUS 1: "But on my Father's side, I am Alpha and Omega; On my Father's side, the Beginning and the End. On my Father's side is the throne I left in Heaven. Soon I'll sit down on the right of my Father's side again." 2. It was clear for them to see He was no ordinary boy, 'Cause with every word He spoke there was power in His voice. I can almost hear Him answer all the questions being thrown As the teacher asked Him, "Son, where do you call home?" And Jesus said, "On Mother's side I'm just a lowly Nazarene, CHORUS 2: "But on my Father's side, my residence is Heaven. On my Father's side, the gates stand open wide To my Father's side, where the saints will be rejoicing When I step across the tide to my Father's side." BRIDGE: If your sins are washed away then you have been redeemed. Now we are His family, so join with us and sing: CHORUS 3: On our Father's side our residence is Heaven. On our Father's side, the gates stand open wide To our Father's side where the saints will be rejoicing, When we step across the tide to our Father's side. Just a young boy in the temple one day Shared with the doctors. They were so amazed. Never had they seen one so young speak so swift. They ask Him many questions. The conversation went like this: CHORUS: [MALE SPEAKING:] Son, what's your name? [or: What's your name, son?] [FEMALE SINGING:] On my Mother's side, my name is Jesus. On my Father's side, they call me Emmanuel. [MALE SPEAKING:] How old are you? [FEMALE SINGING:] On my Mother's side, now I'm 12 years, But on my Father's side, I've just always been. [MALE SPEAKING:] Where ya from? [FEMALE SINGING:] On my Mother's side, I'm from Bethlehem, But on my Father's side, it's New Jerusalem. [MALE SPEAKING:] What's your plan? [FEMALE SINGING:] On my Mother's side, I'll be crucified, But on my Father's side, in three days I will rise, And I'll sit on [at] my Father's side. 2. He was the Son of God, yet the Son of Man, And I can't help but wonder just how brother Joseph must have felt [or: wonder how Joseph must have felt] As through an open door that day he heard his Son reply. He said, "You see, I am the King of Kings; that's on my Father's side."
