Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Pleugh Sang (My Heartly Service) From: Mad Maudlin Date: 02 Apr 01 - 04:49 PM Hallo Joe, was für eine Überraschung! Ich wohne nicht in Berlin, kenne es aber - eine interessante Stadt, oder? If you like, I can send you many more of these, I've got a whole book and several CDs full of medieval German stuff. There are quite a few by Oswald von Wolkenstein, too, judging from his songs and poems he seemed to hate virtually everybody and everything (he sounds just like a 14th century Marvin the Robot sometimes:-) Mad Maudlin P.S.I live very close to the Belgian border - quite a way away from Berlin... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Pleugh Sang (My Heartly Service) From: Mad Maudlin Date: 01 Apr 01 - 02:05 PM Some more thoughts, Joe Offer... You said that you wondered if there were hiddden jibes in this piece - there's a satirical verse by the 14th century German poet Oswald von Wolkenstein that came to my mind when I re-read your comment. It's also a jibe aimed at a member of the court of emperor Sigismund, his secretary actually. It's done as a comparison with an animal, in this case a pike. The emperor's secretary was one Hermann Hecht (Hecht means pike in German)from Jülich near Cologne -"Gülcher" means "man from Jülich"- , and he was said to drink a lot. Also, he was old Oswald's pet enemy, so one day, being really PO'd, he wrote the following verse:
Wer nach der Waage ringe hechte kaufen welle This translates into English as:
He who wants to buy puny pikes by the pound Hope I didn't bore you, but I wanted to share that one with you. Mad Maudlin. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Pleugh Sang (My Heartly Service) From: Mad Maudlin Date: 01 Apr 01 - 04:48 AM Thanks very much for your help! I'm a member of a medieval music group and we would love to perform that one (I've got iton CD and played it to the others at a rehearsal and they liked it all...) but since English (or better,Scots) is not my mother tongue I had some trouble understanding it. Again, thanks very much, you helped me a lot! Very grateful, Mad Maudlin |
Subject: ADD: The Pleugh Sang (My Heartly Service) From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Mar 01 - 01:35 AM
The preceeding song, and following notes are taken from "On the Banks of Helicon - Early Music of Scotland" by The Baltimore Consort
"The boistrous late-15th century "My heartly service" has been described as a french "fricassee" (a jumble of ingredients) above an ostinato bass. In this amusing piece, originally associated with an ancient ceremony in which herdsmen dressed as beasts pulled a plow to mark the beginning of the plowing year, two voices call out the names of oxen as well as their fellow herdsmen, and then enumerate the parts of a plow."
I wonder , since this piece is intended for court, if it is possible that there could be hidden jibes at members of court society, disguised as Falselips Fergus, or poor, dead Trip-free . . . Copied from this site (click) -Joe Offer- |
