Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: MMario Date: 09 May 01 - 04:30 PM from this site:Naval Terminology, Jargon and Slang FAQ fanny - at least about the time canned meat was introduced, was canned meat. and from this site:word and phrase origin of the day "Fanny Adams was murdered and mutilated in 1812, her body cut into pieces and thrown into the River Wey at Alton in Hampshire. Her murderer, one Fred Baker, was publicly hanged in Winchester. Young Fanny Adams's name, give wide currency, was adopted by sailors to indicate a particularly distasteful meal, since Fanny Adams had been disposed of in a kettle. In fact, when kettles came into use in the British navy they were dubbed Fannys as were tins or cans of meat. There is no doubt that Fanny Adams is the basis for the military expression Sweet Fanny Adams, meaning something worthless or nothing at all. " |

Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Kim C Date: 09 May 01 - 04:05 PM I once dated a guy whose mother's given name was Fanny. She changed it to Lou. :-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 May 01 - 01:46 PM The information I have says that Fanny (Frances) Power was the daughter of David Power of Coorheen. She married Richard Trench of Garbally in 1732, and some copies of the tune were called "Mrs. Trench". In the words accompanying the tune (which I unfortunately don't have), I understand that Carolan says he hopes to live to dance at her wedding. That would make them Dick and Fanny Trench - even more smutty inuendo!! Interesting that in the US, the fanny is the back bottom, and in the UK it's the front bottom...... wonder which one was first? Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Helen Date: 07 May 01 - 08:04 PM One of the best Carolan sites I know of is this one, run by Lesley, who Mudcats as well. Go to the Carolan section, but don't forget to have a look at Barry Taylor's tunes, also a Mudcatter, who does some of the most beautiful arrangements of folk tunes I have heard. http://www.contemplator.com/ By the way, Fanny Power is one of my favourite Carolan tunes on the Celtic harp. Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Kim C Date: 07 May 01 - 05:50 PM Thanks y'all. I have a tune labeled Planxty Fanny Powers in one of my books and I just wondered. :-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: GUEST,Claymore Date: 07 May 01 - 05:42 PM Actually, a group from Shepherdstown played last year at the annual concert at the Paw Paw, WV nudist colony. And with a slightly harder emphasis on the first word of the title, they got a standing ovation, whereupon the flautist lost her music, and the guitarist pinned his to the music stand from underneath. The musicians were allowed to be clothed, and pictures which taken from behind the audience towards the stage, made the front page of the local paper. This year, they allegedly have musical groups paying to play... now that's Fanny Power |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: wysiwyg Date: 07 May 01 - 03:50 PM So... is Mrs. Power named Fanny, or is Fanny a relative of Mrs.? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: jeffp Date: 07 May 01 - 03:44 PM I stand corrected. Susan, you had it right. According to that site, Carolan's Concerto is also known as Mrs. Power. jeffp |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Ian HP Date: 07 May 01 - 03:38 PM Kim, just had another thought: Planxty Fanny Power and Fanny Power are the same, but NOT to be confused with another tune called Mrs. Power (or Poer), otherwise known as Carolan's Concerto. Despite what jeffp says above, Fanny Power and Mrs. Power are not the same tune. For more info see the Carolan website I mention above. |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: wysiwyg Date: 07 May 01 - 01:55 PM Well, it is said on the South Side of Chicago, "The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'." This would provide a (hahah) firm theoretical foundation for the blues piece "Built for Comfort" as well, if sung by a lady with a strong-bottomed voice. As a political slogan, however, it combines well with that other item that always casues me to raise a fist in a power salute as we go down life's path: "End Road Work". Yeah! End Road Work! Fanny Power! Isn't there also an alternate title for Carolan's Concerto involving Mrs. Poer? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Ian HP Date: 07 May 01 - 01:40 PM Yes, it's the same. In later collections lots of Carolan's tunes had 'Planxty' added erroneously. A planxty seems to have been just a tune Carolan made for a patron. It's the same with Colonel John Irwin, which became, in later collections, Planxty Irwin, The Two William Davises, which became wrongly titled as Planxty Davis or Planxty Davy, etc etc. Few of the original titles were called Planxty. If you go to my website - http://ianhp.tripod.com - you'll find a link to a great Carolan website (sorry, remember my own URL offhand but not the Carolan one) |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: RichM Date: 07 May 01 - 12:19 PM I thought "Fanny Power" was a political slogan... |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: Homeless Date: 07 May 01 - 12:14 PM I've also seen it as Planxty Fanny Poer and Fany Poer. The only difference I've seen/heard is in embellishments, depending on which instrument the music is for/played on. |
Subject: RE: Help: Fanny Power From: jeffp Date: 07 May 01 - 11:43 AM Kim, I've seen the tune listed as Fanny Power, Planxty Fanny Power, and Mrs. Power. As far as I know, they're all the same tune. It's a lovely one, too. jeffp |
