I heard that Jesse Jackson is going to establish residence in North Carolina and run for the Senate seat. Supposedly he has announced that things in Washington won't be the same without someone named Jesse in that senate seat.

Al Sharpton as president. Jesse Jackson as senator. That's quite a combination, I think.

Seriously though, for those of you who are not satisfied having Al Gore as the standard bearer for the Democratic Party in the next election, Al Sharpton does offer an alternative.

Just in case you'd like to know how big these news are in Germany: A two column portrait including picture of Helms made page 2 in my nationally distributed newspaper. In case you can read German it is here (link only valid today).

The most often used adjectives in this context were 'erzkonservativ' (ultra-conservative) and 'uncompromising' and the usual comment was 'good for him - and good for us'.

interesting debate in the wall street journal today between al hunt, the liberal head of the paper's washington bureau who hates helms, and an outside contributor who disagrees with most of what helms said but arguest that he made possible the acceptance of multiracial politics and acceptance of black advances in the south in the last three decades...

I shall not mourn the fact that Jesse is no longer in the Senate. However, my Liberal friends, I would not get my hopes up too far. Do you suppose the good people who elected and re-elected Jesse to successive terms in the U. S. Senate will likely send a man or woman to replace him that is more to your liking?

I suppose there is always hope.

I've lived in NC all my life and I can tell you this much about Helms: Don't celebrate his political passing until you see the last shovelful of red clay covering his cold, blue body. I won't rejoice until the deadline for reelection is past, because in the past he has always decided that the country simply cannot survive without him and run again despite early rumblings of retirement. I don't care how OLD he is, he really believes we'll all go straight to hell without his hand on the wheel of morality. When he dies I will go straight to the store for a bottle of champagne, and I will toast his passing with a song: "Ding dong, the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead!"

I always remember with a great big grin the bumper sticker Helms' campaign put out several elections back. They said, simply: "Run, Jesse, Run". So hundreds of his creative foes snapped them up...in order to plaster them across their front bumpers!
