Subject: Lyr Add: ROSE (Rod McKuen) From: pdq Date: 19 Jan 09 - 01:12 PM Here are the lyrics from the site from shown above (GUEST,Ptto911): ROSE ~ Rod McKuen I married Rose in Twenty-One we got a little farm the first year out the barn burned down I broke my good right arm. From then on in things got bad I guess they could have been worse but seeing Rose in rags all day made me wanna curse. That's okay Rose'd say don't you worry none we'll have good times by and by next fall when the works all done. I watched her hands grow rough and red from pickin' in the fields putting up in Mason Jars what little crops they'd yield. I'd find what jobs there were in town most times there were none but Rose'd still have supper a waitin' at night when the day was done. That's okay Rose'd say don't you worry none we'll have good times by and by next fall when the works all done. Our first-born had a face like Rose and I guess a temper like mine she'd sleep all day and cry all night but she grew up and married fine. Our only son went off to fight in Nineteen Forty and Four a year went by and a telegram said he ain't comin' home no more. One winter night in Fifty Nine Rose took a terrible chill she went to sleep and she didn't wake up I guess she's sleeping still. But sometimes when the wind is singing high up in the Chinaberry tree it seems it not the wind at all but Rose singing to me. That's okay Rose'd say don't you worry none we'll have good times by and by next fall when the works all done. That's okay Rose'd say don't you worry none we'll have good times by and by next fall when the works all done. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose (Rod McKuen) From: GUEST,Guest from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada Date: 13 Feb 08 - 07:35 PM THANKS!!! NOW I know where that song came from that mom sang to us in the 60's! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose (Rod McKuen) From: GUEST,CrawDaddy Date: 25 Jan 08 - 12:37 AM I saw Glenn Yarbrough perform this song and lots of others live in Lafayette, LA concert in 1968 while attending USL there. Memory says it was in a theater in the Oil Center Plaza in Lafayette. Great concert!!! This song has always stuck in my head even 40 years later. I did have the album of this too but can't even find one like it now. I'm sure glad to see the lyrics again. NO! this has no relations to Marty Robins, or cowboy songs or a dog name blue. ("when the work's all done next fall" is not the same) If you can find any album of Glenn doing Rod, treat yourself to something wonderful. Put it on - Turn off the lights, pour a strong one if you like, lay back ... let your mind wander and be sure to have Kleenex handy. Gary |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose (Rod McKuen) From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 05 - 07:54 PM This thank you is almost two years late, but thanks for the words. That's exactly what I was looking for. Should have kept checking back. Again, many many thanks. Dave |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Fall When the Work's All Done From: GUEST,cyndy Date: 11 Aug 04 - 10:53 PM Boy, that's an old one. Wriiten by rod mckuen I think. I can remeber a line "when the wind is singing high in the chinaberry tree" but I can't remember any more. I think it was on a glen yarborough album named "glen yarborough sings rod mckuen" from the early 1960's. Good luck |

Do you have the lyrics to "Rustin' In The Rain"? I believe it is another McKuen song that Yarborough recorded. Also done by John Stewart in the Kingston Trio. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Dale Rose Date: 09 May 00 - 11:14 PM I can't figure out WHY it didn't work, but the title fails to come up in the search box. This works, though. Go up to the top of the page where it says Digitrad Lyrics Search. Type in Charlie died at daybreak, then hit Go, and you'll get the lyrics you asked for.
STILL don't have my Glenn Ohrlin CD. I don't know how it got to be over two years since we talked about this. |

I think he's a little too pretentious for my tastes, although I guess I like some of his stuff. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: S.P. Buck Mulligan Date: 21 Feb 98 - 09:50 AM Dave has it right, the song I think is titled simply "Rose" and is on either "Baby the Rain Must Fall", "One More Round", or "Honey and Wine" all of which are in boxes under my bed, waiting for me to get my turntable hooked up again. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: kit ketcham Date: 20 Feb 98 - 09:47 PM I remember lots of long, boozy evenings at the GOld Hill in outside of Boulder CO, singing that very song! The Dillards used to visit the Inn in those days; you might look in some of their stuff. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Feb 98 - 03:51 AM Darn it, Dave, I DO remember that song, but I don't remember even as much as you do. It was one of the really good songs Yarbrough sings - I just wish he'd sing more of the good ones. Even after all these years, his voice is still very good. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Dave L Date: 03 Feb 98 - 11:40 PM I remember parts of the song, but not much. "That's OK Rose would say, Don't you worry none. We'll have good times by and by next fall when the works all done." "And then in the spring of 43 Rose took a terrible chill. She went to sleep and I guess she's sleeping still." "Our only son went off to fight in 1944. A year went by and we got word he wouldn't be coming home anymore. Maybe this will help someone remember. The song reminds me of my grandparents. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: rich r Date: 03 Feb 98 - 09:37 PM I am afraid I am going to have to throw out some guesses here. I do not recall the song. However, Rediscover Music has a catalog with 17-18 Glen Yarbrough albums. Looking throught the titles and trying to put context to the 2 lines listed, I will suggest the following in hopes someone's memory will be joggled. Rose, Me & My Dog (Live at the Hungry I) When Summer Ends (Come Share My Life) I'm Strong But I Like Roses (GY Sings Rod McKuen) The Summer's Long (LIve at the Hungry I) good luck rich r |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Feb 98 - 01:08 AM Dave L., I promise that sooner or later, we'll get back on track and come up with the lyrics of YOUR song - even though the other song is really good, and you should give it a listen..... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Dale Rose Date: 02 Feb 98 - 10:43 PM Shanachie/Yazoo has reissued (and expanded) the WHEN I WAS A COWBOY recordings as Yazoo 2022 and 2023. Highly recommended, though I have only volume I, which does not include When The Works All Done This Fall. I am sure that it was on the lp that Chet mentions, which I think was on Shanachie/Morning Star
The earlier post about Glenn Ohrlin's new CD was mine, I had cookies turned off and just did not notice that my name was not typed in for me. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: lesblank Date: 02 Feb 98 - 09:42 PM Doc Watson does this great old ballad a bit differently than MMM and,for my money, much more in character. The CD is titled "Doc Watson On Stage featuring Merle Watson". It is on Vanguard VCD 9/10. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: chet w Date: 02 Feb 98 - 06:51 PM I have an old album on either Rounder or Flying Fish records, I believe, entitled "When I was a Cowboy" which is said to be an album of mostly real cowboys doing real cowboy songs. If you're really interested in the history of cowboy music, it's worth trying to find. It includes "When the Work's all Done this Fall". Good luck, Chet W. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: RonU Date: 02 Feb 98 - 06:13 PM The jacket accompanying MM Murphy's album says, "Cowboys showing reverance for their mothers often sang this poignant song about a poor cowboy who was mortally injured in a fall from his horse. In the original 1893 poem "After The Roundup", by Montana cowboy poet D.J. O'Malley, the cowboy's mother apparently preceded him in death, for his last words were "I'll see my mother when work's done this fall." |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Bruce O. Date: 02 Feb 98 - 04:54 PM I thought I posted a note, but it isn't here. Okay, srtart over. Thanks Joe for mentioning the DT version, which is the one I meant but missed on my first seach through DT. Yes, it doesn't look like the one asked for, unless someone 'improved' it. My general feelings about Glen Yarbrough are about the same as Joe's, but I have an early 33 1/3 by him alone with some rare old English songs I've seldom or never heard elsewhere, and that's one I like very much. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Date: 02 Feb 98 - 04:51 PM On a tangental note, Rounder is releasing a long overdue Glenn Ohrlin CD on February 10. Information below taken from the Rounder site.
Glenn Ohrlin, A Cowboy’s Life Rounder 0420 Cattleman and rodeo veteran Glenn Ohrlin has picked up lots of old time songs over his long career as a working cowboy and still sings them in the dry and laconic manner in which he originally heard them. A National Folk Heritage Award winner, Glenn is joined by the well known fiddler J.P. Fraley and guitarist Gordon McCann.
Around here, we would also say well known guitarist Gordon McCann. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Feb 98 - 04:34 PM This is going to bug me until we find it, although I'm glad people pointed out "When the Work's All Done This Fall." The song Glenn Yarbrough recorded is quite different, as I recall. I don't think I've heard it in 30 years, so the memory of it is kind of vague. Does anybody at least know the name of this song, so we know where to start looking? Any Limeliters fans out there? I have to admit my tolerance for Yarbrough is a bit limited - he did some good stuff at times, but a number of his performances were what I would categorize as "crude" or "sappy." I don't know if I can stand listening to any more Yarbrough in my search for this song. Thanks to Ron, I was inspired to pull out Michael Martin Murphey, and I feel much better. Whew! Thanks, Ron. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: RonU Date: 02 Feb 98 - 03:25 PM Michael Martin Murphy has an album "Cowboy Songs", one of which is titled "When The Work's All Done This Fall". |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Feb 98 - 02:08 PM I was wondering about When the Work's All Done THIS Fall, as it's called in the database, but I guess that's not it. I do remember Yarbrough singing it, but I can't find it. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Phideaux Date: 02 Feb 98 - 01:05 PM Also Marty Robbins |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Next fall when the work's all done From: Bruce O. Date: 02 Feb 98 - 10:02 AM If that's the cowboy song "When the work's all done next fall" the singer would more likely be Glenn Ohrlin. |
