Subject: RE: Can y Melinydd- Final Take From: sian, west wales Date: 08 Aug 02 - 04:55 AM Gee - it works for me. So ... hmmmm ... how do I solve this one without you ringing me up and singing it to you? (Telephone I understand. Paltalk is beyond me!) I hesitate to complicate things further by an imperfect solutions but would the following help? (It's difficult for me to think of it 'afresh' - it's so familiar to me that I'm not sure I can attack the problem from your angle!) I'll also see if I can find a book with the words written immediately under the music. A scan would then be possible ... Subject: RE: Can y Melinydd- Final Take From: Snuffy Date: 07 Aug 02 - 07:11 PM I presume the first line of the chorus is repeated. |
Subject: RE: Can y Melinydd- Final Take From: MMario Date: 07 Aug 02 - 09:41 AM This is Welsh OR English! (Unless I am badly mistaking the number of sylabbles in the Welsh!) |
Subject: RE: Can y Melinydd- Final Take From: Snuffy Date: 07 Aug 02 - 09:34 AM You'll have to ask the Welsh speakers, Mario. I just played about with the ABC Siân provided. WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Can y Melinydd- Final Take From: MMario Date: 07 Aug 02 - 08:40 AM Marvelous! My only question - I can fit the words to the tune - except for the chorus. seem to be too many notes for the words... |

Subject: Lyr Add: CÂN Y MILENYDD (Welsh + English) From: Nigel Parsons Date: 21 Jul 02 - 09:21 PM CâN Y MELINYDD (Talhaiarn, with additions by Rhuddenfab; All based on one 'Trad' verse)
Mae gen i dy^ cysurus
Chorus
Mae gen i drol a cheffyl
Mae gen i gwpwrdd cornel
Mae gen i ebol melyn
Mi neidith a mi brancith
Mae gen i iâr a cheiliog,
Fe aeth yr iâr i rodio,
Originally known as Tôn y Melinydd (Tune of...) first published in "Gems of Welsh Melody 1862". "Mae gennyf dy^ gysurus" was written by a famous Welsh poet, Talhaiarn - after which it was called Cân y Melinydd. The verse "Mae gen i ebol melyn" is traditional, and some of the others were written by another poet, Rhuddenfab*. (Notes taken from Huw Williams' book "Canu'r Pobl".)
CâN Y MELINYDD (English translation)
I have a cosy cottage ,
Chorus
I have a horse and wagon
I have a corner cupboard,
I have a golden foal, who
He leaps and prances gaily
I have a hen and cock'rel
The cock'rel went a'walking
This translation was done in July 2002 with a lot of help and urging from the Mudcat community. It started life as a request for a translation of a song which was to be sung in Welsh, but where the singer wanted to at least know the meaning. It then became a request for a singable translation. |

The previous thread was at This point it gave, not only our working of the song, but also, a source for the song in book form (In Welsh) The next posting (if no-one beats me to it) will contain both the English and Welsh versions of this song.
