A good sea shanty like PAddy Lay Back, while not necessarily about pirates is nice for kids because of the "Call and Response" in it.

Gilbert and Sullivan, "I am the Pirate King" (he is the pirate king).

Almost any sea shanty.

Lots of Web Sites including www.portroyalprivateers.org and www.noquartergiven.net. No Quarter Given is a quarterly magazine devoted to pirate reenactment and the golden age of piracy. Also, look up The Bilge Pumps. They are really funny singing group dressed up as pirates.

Barracuda d'Morte, Captain & Navigator of El Pollo del Mar, identical twin sister to Phillistina d'Morte, the Corsican Sisters and members of Port Royal Privateers.

Thanks for all the replies - lots to go at. It might take me a little while to browse and make a selection but I rather like Snuffy's idea of an action song.

The Ralph Reader "Bucanneers" has good bloodthirsty words although it is quite difficult for youngsters to sing and a little bit dated in is style but, as I'm using it in a Gang Show, I have a special reason for including it. Snuffy's suggestion is a simple song which will provide the sketch with balance.

The show is not until February so I will report back then to let you know how the performance went.

One of my favorite "pirate" songs and safe for kids: Strike the Bell

It's sung (rather gustily I might add) by The Pyrates Royale

"8 to 11 year-olds on the theme of pirates."

Be sure to tell them about wenching, murer, theft, kidnapping, and buggary.

Or if you want a "safe" song - try Disney's "Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, A Pirate's life for me."

I found most of these at Cantaria.com they have accompanying music so you can get a feel for the song.......hope it helps.

Uncle Dave - Surely "Letters of Mart and Counter Mart "

But seriously folks "Smith of Bristol" "Captain Kidd" or dare I mention it "A Pirate King" from THe Pirates of Penzance. I just love the lines " There's many a king on an eartly throne,
Before he calls his crown his own<
Needs be must do,
More dirty deeds than ever I do !
For I am a Pirate King........!

If you want a bright and bouncy tune try the theme tunes from "The Bucaneers" (a TV series of the mid 1950s), see Whirlygig TV look up "Children's TV", highlight "Ivanhoe" and click on "The Bucaneers" - You'll need Real Player to play the tune.

While privateers are not the same as pirates (if they work according to the powers given them in their Letters of Marque and Reprisal), Barrett's Privateers MIGHT be good.

Try Tanglefoot's Traighli Bay.

Traighli Bay written by Al Parrish

It was June and it was hot, when on board the ship we got
With shot and powder for the guns and a hogshead full of rum
And salt cod to last until the winter squalls
We made for the southwest where the hunting would be best
Where the Spanish ships of trade down with Aztec silver laden
Were the fairest game for gentlemen of fortune

Chorus

And with tar on our pigtails and blood on our rapiers
We'll fly the skull and crossbones and by God we'll take no prisoners
It's hiho away boys, we'll sail from Traighli Bay boys
Hoist the Jolly Roger at the break of day
From up the crowsnest then, called the third mate, Mr. Flynn
"Set the course and hold 'er steady and for action make 'er ready
There's a Spanish merchant off the starbord bow"
We raised the black flag high, fast the Spaniard turned to fly
We followed in her wake until we could overtake
And dismasted her with chain from cannon fired

Chorus

We pulled up alongside with our grappling hooks and lines
Guns and cutlasses in hand on the gunwales we did stand
Every hand from the Captain to the cabin boy
Saw three dead the chains had flayed, then we raised and crossed our blades
To their mates we gave our best as the sun set in the west
With pikes and swords, pistols, fists and feet

Chorus

From the darkness till the dawn as the battle raged on
We fought with manly fitness as we meant to leave no witness
We lost Mr. Flynn and one leg from the cabin boy
But with their treasure we retired and we set a canvas fire
Left her sinking to the deep where their silent bones will sleep
And we forged a leg of gold for the cabin boy

Chorus

It was August and still warm when to Traighli we returned
Fifty-eight days on the main and we've no need to sail again
We've gold and silver more than we could spend
Now half a century has passed and of that crew I am the last
Fifty years I've roamed these docks and when I get a chance to talk
I tell of how I got this golden leg.

Chorus

What about Smith of Bristol? It's easy to learn and has a chorus where everyone can join in. (I have a recording by the Dubliners, don't know if anyone besides them recorded it.)

And, even though it's a shanty and not a pirate song, Whip Jamboree would also be great, I think!

I recently wrote a pirate song, expanding on the wonderful "Pirates of Penzance." In PoP only the first verse and the chorus of the following are original; the rest I added. Lots of potential action that the kids would like (e.g. "bop on the head" ....) Like it?

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE REDEUX

Llewellyn Toulmin 2002 Borrowing on the Original Verse and Chorus By Gilbert and Sullivan

With cat-like tread Upon our prey we steal In silence dread Our cautious way we feel. No sound at all, We never speak a word, A fly's foot-fall Would be distinctly heard!

CHORUS:

Come, friends, who plough the sea, Truce to navigation Take another station. Let's vary piracee With a little burglaree!

To London's bower Now we all shall sneak. Into the Tower We shall take a peek. We'll steal no fakes It is a little cruel What shall we take? Why, the British Crown Jewels!

CHORUS

Beefeaters will Try to halt our crime. We'll hold them still By asking them the time. Then a bop on the head, They'll crash to the floor, Now they're in bed We're at the golden door!

CHORUS

We'll take the key From our sleeping friend. Now we'll see Our theft through the end. The doors open wide Edward's crown look fine They cannot hide. These Jewels are mine!

CHORUS

I look so sleek In my crown divine With class I reek My diamond earrings shine. The crime scene we'll leave But a pirate ship's for rubes No need to grieve -- We'll simply take the Tube!

CHORUS

Now we've done This world's greatest crime What more fun Can we have in our time? Our next spree Will settle all our fates We'll steal the key To the Pearly Gates!

CHORUS

(quote) "Pirates" by Emerson Lake & Palmer - you can't beat it."

Man ,you beat me to it and well done indeed. The words to one of the best , and my persoanl favorite , tour de force pieces ever created by ELP with lyrics written by former King Crimson bandmate to Grag Lake; Pete Sinfield just role off the tongue in a rhthym all their own .

Personally I would just *love* to see someone transpose the lyrics from the far more elaborate orchestrations of this performance piece to something that could be performed accompanied with a single instrument; my preference being a 12 string.

However , for kids , one would have to edit out the pirates debauchery celebration part......

".......make it a cup for a sea dog's thirst ,_ 12 long long years of bones and beaches_ fever and leeches_ did their worst_

So fill the night_ with paradise_ bring me peach and pecans_ till I burst_ but first_

I want a soft touch_ in the right place_ I wanna to feel_ like a king to tonight"......

Ten of the black_ to beat the Frenchman_ back you dog_ ( somenthing ,something )_ Now open wide sweet heavens gates_ we're gonna see_ if heaven burns_ Oh ,she burns.

I want an angel _ on a gold chain_and I'll ride her_ to the stars. For it's tha last time_for a long, long time_ comre the day break_ Weeee embark.."

The rest from here on to the finale returns to being uncontraversial.

Damn it I couldn't find which storage crate has the LP version of the ELP "Works" album with the lyrics printed. Perhaps someone will be so gracious to publish the words because they really are a storyteller's poem.

Pirates by Emmerson Lake & Palmer - you can't beat it.
What, with lyrics as - The Turk, the Arab and the Spaniard - will soon have pennies on their eyes.
And - the cutlass harvested.

Oooohhh as I listen to it I can see the blood pouring out the scuppers.

It surprises me that no one instantly mentioned "Henry Martyn".

Are you looking for songs ABOUT pirates, or songs credibly to have been sung by pirates?

Here's a fun song with [actions]

When I was 1 I had some fun
The day I went to sea
I climbed aboard a pirate ship [climbing a rope]
And the Captain said to me: [Salute]
We're going this way, that way [Sway left and right]
Forwards, backwards [Sway forwards and back]
Over the rolling sea [wavy motion with hands]
A bottle of rum to warm your tum [drink, then rub stomach]
And that's the life for me. [slap thigh on "that's"]

Increase the number each time and add a suitable rhyme

2 - lost my shoe, 3 - climbed a tree, etc. Get the kids to make up their own .

WassaiL! V

From: Doug Chadwick

I'm putting together musical sketch for public performance with a cast of around fifty 8 to 11 year-olds on the theme of pirates. Songs and tunes that I have already chosen are "What shall we do with the Drunken Sailor", the "Trumpet Hornpipe" (AKA Captain Pugwash) and a Ralph Reader song called "The Buccaneers". I could do with another bright, lively, song with a rousing chorus that would involve all the kids.

Any ideas?
