All I can say regarding the excess weight collected after stopping smoking is; don't start again in order to lose the weight again. It doesn't work!!
I have loads of old, and very old cigarette cards, but no complete sets. Didn't collect them myself, as most of them are even older then me.
It's true....Giok

I was afraid to bring the subject up with you Amos, in case you had lapsed. I succeeded, too. I put on ten pounds a month for the past four months on my lanky frame, so that's my next project. (I have no aerobic stamina right now, none, due to fat filled arteries, or something.) The vascular effects of quitting nicotine were profound and came as quite a surprise to me. One major surprise was a nitrous trip at the dentist. Other than that incident, though, the dazed and confused feeling has abated. datbeeesummiteebadsheetnowudimsane

BRAVO AMOS!!!!!!! HURRAH!! Damn, I would send you a big present if I weren't plumb broke. How about BBB?
Love and hugs,
Deda
(Started smoking at 18, quit at about 36.)
PS Our Mom died in 1987, not '86 -- and was on oxygen, in and out of hospitals, and incontinent for the last couple of years.

Me grandpa also smoked the most wonderful blends in his pipe. Unfortunately, he died of emphysema in 1959. Me mum smoked the palest of cigarettes -- Kents and such -- all filtered to a faretheewell -- but she couldn't walk away from them and eventually she died of emphysema in 1986. My dad smoked pipes, cigars, and cigarettes all his life, but he didn't die of emphysema. He keeled over from a stroke in 1979 related to nicotine-induced blood pressure variation, I believe.

After forty years of regular tobacco use, I am finally free not only of tobacco addiction but also nicotine addiction -- the worst transition I have ever been through. Quitting smoking was nothing compared to quitting nicotine. It requires complete trust that you will eventually come through, because it feels completely hopeless.

And you do come through!!.

A

GUEST,

I do very much appreciate the point you were wanting to make. However, I'm not going to deny that I have smoked in my life. Nor will I deny that there is a subculture that exists among smokers in varying degrees. Nor does it makes sense to deny that there are countless objects of smoking-related nostalgia. They are as much a part of our folklore as things related to alcohol which is gradually claiming the lives of many 'Catters even as I write this. There are countless songs about both and incredible amounts of nostalgically associated items.

Here's my idea for a cartoon:

Two kids with cards:

"I'll trade you three 'Smoking Kills' for a 'Smoking Causes Birth Defects'."

At the same time that Mudcatters encourage one of its most beloved members to hang in there as his very life is threatened by the consequences of his smoking, there are still Mudcatters ready to celebrate the slow suicide that is smoking.

Unfuckingbelievable!

Just remembering the old cigs I used to smoke and linking it with music I wonder if one of the Coppers was lay there having a post-coital smoke when he came up with the line

Twixt Woodbine and Ivy I lay down to rest...?

The things you learn. How on earth do you make a walking stick out of a cactus? You'ld think it would be too brittle.
Excellent nostalgic thread. I am sitting and thinking of those lovely Goldleaf packets.
Do the Red Indians have to stand outside the wigwam now for the old pipe of peace?

DtG...my dad's got the Jack Russell, too! No local pub, though, BUT he also has a great walking stick made of cactus...no spines, though!

Gave up 10 years ago. Doesn't bother me if anyone around does smoke. I am going to start again, on a pipe with one of the dutch blends, in 15 years when I retire. I am also going to get myself a Jack Russell terrier, my own seat in the pub and a stick to whack the ankles of any young whipersnapper who dares get in my way:-)

Wish they had cards with tobacco so I could collect them and have yet another mine of useless information bore the arse off people with...

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Sam, I can't be around any kind of smoke as I am allergic to it.(I wish my Rog would quit for his own sake.)Anyway, your comment about the pipe reminded me of how much fun it was when my dad would let me mix up his pipe tobaccos for him in his Sir Walter Raleigh tin. He used that brand and Rum & Maple...I can't remember how much of each, but I would know that smell anywhere, even all these years later. I felt it was a very important job for a little girl to do.

I also remember the luscious scent of the Flying Dutchman brand my brother smoked.

My dad put his pipe up on a shelf one day in his 60s and has never smoked another day of his 86 years.

Thanks,

kat

SMOKERS ONLY

Evangelising non-smokers, especially those of the "born-again" variety, ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. You may be tempted to join us "True Believers", who are the last of a dying race.

Did you collect Cigarette Cards when you were a Kid?

And, swap them with your schoolmates, while you were having a fag behind the bike shed at lunchtime?

If so, you'll appreciate the UK "Gdf Cartophily" site. There's hundreds of cards, sorted by maker and category. Since I was looking for whaling info when I found 'em, we'll start you on the Nautical Page.

Light your pipe, have a quiet puff, and indulge in NOSTALGIA!

Sighs - Sam
