Raphael Callaghan - a super fine blues singer/guitarist from Liverpool - was pretty friendly with Alexis ( Alexis produced an album of Raphael and Jim James some 30+ years ago). Raphael has got lots of interestng stories concerning Alexis ( some are reproduced in the Shapiro biog ) I was once present at a BBC Radio recording session that Jim and Raphael did for Alexis way back when.

I shared a flat with John Snelling and others for three years at Aberystwyth in the early sixties. We all thought he was a total plonker - how wrong can you be - just goes to show what pillocks we all were. He originally came from London, I believe, but when he was at University his parents lived in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, where his father taught art.

Is that where John Snelling came from? I often wondered. Great books.

I have a spool of tape from about 1964 with an interview of Alexis done for our college newspaper (The Courier at UCW Aberystwyth). I've had no means of playing it since about 1968, and no means of identifying which tape it is out of three (the others full of ancient folk club performances). I'd love to have them copied onto a CDROM if someone out there could do it.
The interview was conducted by the late John Snelling, who later wrote some powerful books on Buddhism and Mount Kailash. I sat there in awe listening to him interview a very wise guy who had a lot of depth to his experience and knowledge of blues music. A privelege.

And here is a piece of real trivia. Alexis's Martin guitar was played for many years by Martin Carthy. Look closely at it and you can see the gougemarks on the plate!!

Saw him several times in my teens and his knowledge of the blues was enormous. Nearly everybody who was anybody played with him at some time and he was largely instrumental in getting the Stones together and on stage.

The greatest respect for AK...

Peace

Thank you for posting this - You've brought back some great memories for me! Mum & I have never seen eye to eye on musical taste, but this was a radio show that we listened to, & sang along with, together. I'd nearly forgotten it, but we had such good times.
You could get one with something while you listened, too, which was a winner for Mum - I have a clear memory of us scrubbing the floor together to the strains of "Black Cat Bone"!

There is a brief glimpse of him in the Mike Figgis "Red, White, and Blue" film as part of the Martin Scorcese "Blues" series.

Week before last Paul Jones' BBC blues show was devoted to Alexis. If you missed it, the archive will have been cleared by now. I was surprised how plummy Long John Baldry's speaking voice was, sounded quite a toff!

I first came across the name of Alexis Korner in the late 70s. I was in my teens, and I had already been turned onto the blues by the likes of Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones. When I stumbled across Alexis Korner's Blues & Soul Show one saturday afternoon, the blues was not exactly a revelation. What was a revelation was the richness of the blues; how it was not just a guitar based music from Chicago, but that this music had a history in which it embraced many different varieties of the form: The Delta Blues singers, boogie-woogie, free-form jazz, folk blues, work and prison songs. Rock was just one variant. Included amongst all this was gospel, soul and modern funk music. The programme was an eye-opener. It was Korner who first introduced me to the music of Charles Mingus and Muddy Waters, who first made me see a direct connection between the traditional music of Burundi and the avant-garde jazz of Oliver Lake. The richness and diversity of the blues, and black music generally, was opened to me by listening to this show. The man's knowledge of his subject was inexhaustable, and it was presented in such a warm rich voice that, as a listener, I felt drawn to him, curious to know who he was. I had no idea he was a musician until I came across a re-released EP he recorded with Davy Graham called 3/4 AD.(This is on a CD called 'The Guitar Player...plus' by Davy Graham, currently available from Amazon.)This remains Korner's most satisfying piece. He was not a great recording artist and a limited musician. His importance lies in his knowledge and love of the blues that he disseminated through his broadcasts, journalism and playing. He was a generous man, always ready to give someone a helping hand and encouragement, and never became jealous of their success.

Does anyone share my enthusiasim of Korner? More to the point, has anyone got any personal stories about him - Have you seen him in concert, did you work with him, did you meet him? I went to a Professor Longhair concert in the late 70s. In the intermission, I went to the bar, and there was the great man himself talking with freinds. I remember thinking how short he was.
