I am the baby that was crying in the background. My dad recorded the record!

Thanks to all for finding the lyrics - I have an old '78 in the attic of the song with 'Sailing up the Clyde' on the reverse. Played the record endlessly as a lad in the early 50's on an old wind-up Gramophone.
I often wander round the house singing the chorus, but now can let my curious grandchildren hear the lot! Their cultural education will be complete.

... apologies to Jim Dixon, who has indeed already included him on his music-hall thread list.

i I note it has a chorus very similar to that of The Day We Went Tae Rothesay-o, [googling it on Amazon records] to the same tune; but the verse has a different rhythm and tune. Is the tune of the verse similarly based on a traditional tune, or was it composed for the song {which was written by whom?}?

ii Should not Will Fyffe, as well as Harry Lauder, be added to the significant names on the ongoing Gracie Fields?/Music Hall thread?

~Michael~

My transcription from a recording on Spotify:

YE CAN COME AND SEE THE BABY
As sung by Will Fyffe

1. Oh, the wife and I felt very, very lonely for a while,
Sittin' in the kitchen by oorselves,
Till one day over tea, the wife she told tae me
A secret that I couldnae keep mysel;
So at three o'clock this mornin', I wis runnin' doon the street.
The neebours must 'a' thought there was a fire.
The polisman was laughin' lood when I came back again,
For by ma side was Doctor McIntyre.

CHORUS: An' you can come an' see the baby any day ye care to call.
He's lyin' by his mammy in a wee white shawl.
He looks so cute an' slanky like a dumplin' in a hankie,
An' we're goin' ta call him William Angus Jamieson Jock McCall.
Tirra madee madoo maday, tirra madee madaddy-o.
Tirra madee madoo maday. I am his daddy-o.

2. Mind you, I'm a chap that very, very seldom takes a dram.
In fact, it's very seldom in the hoose,
But today I feel so glad that I've been made a dad,
I'm entitled for to go upon the loose.
So since op'nin' time this mornin, I've been treatin' all ma pals,
For they said that I must wet the baby's head.
Man, I felt a priggly(?) chap when they slapped me on the back,
So I waited until closing time and said: CHORUS

This song was very well known and sung in my Scottish family. This is what I remember of it.

Oh the wife and I felt very very lonely for a while
Sitting in the kitchen by ourselves
Then one day after tea the wife she told to me a secret that I couldnay keep myself.
So since two o'clock this morning I've been running round the street
The neighbours must have thought there was a fire
The policeman was laughing as I went running by for at my side was Dr. McIntyre.

You can come and see the baby any day you care to call
He's lying by his mammy in a wee white shawl
He looks so neat and swanky like a dumplin in a hanky and we're going to call him William Angus Jimmieson Jock McCall.

Dimmeradoo my daddy-o dimmerado my daddy-a
We've got a baby in the hoose and I am the Daddy-O

According to the British Library Sound Archive Catalog, YE CAN COME AND SEE THE BABY was recorded by Will Fyffe in 1927. His recording can be found on an album called "I Belong to Glasgow" (Hallmark, 2008).

Found at Glesga Songs:

YOU CAN COME AND SEE THE BABY
(As sung by Andy Stewart)

Oh, you can come and see the baby if ye care to call.
He's lyin' wi' his mammy in a wee white shawl.
He looks so neat and slanky like a dumpling in a hankie,
And were gonna call him William Angus Jamieson Jock McCall.
Oh dimara doo a doo a day dimara doo mah daddy-o.
We've got a baby in the hoose, and I am his daddy-o.

Well, the wife and I were very, very lonesome for a while,
Sitting in the kitchen by ourselves.
Then one night over tea, the wife she told tae me
A secret that I couldnae keep tae myself;
So at three o'clock this morning, I wis running doon the street.
Oh, the neighbours must have thought there was a fire.
A policeman started laughin', when I came back again,
For by my side was Doctor McIntyre.

Andy Stewart (not to be confused with Andy M. Stewart) sings WE'VE GOT A BABY IN THE HOUSE on several albums "The Best of Andy Stewart," (1996); "Forever in Song"; "My Scotland" (1991); "Donald, Where's Yer Troosers? And Many More."

(I haven't compared all the track lists diligently but some of these look suspiciously like the same album reissued under a different title.)

A song recently came into my head - for no apparent reason - that my father and mother used to sing to us as children. I can only remember one verse - or maybe it's the chorus - but there was certainly an introduction. This is what I remember - can anyone help with the rest? Thanks in advance
