Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: GUEST,Peri Arnold Date: 12 Sep 12 - 11:40 PM In the early 1960s my friends and discovered Dodi Kallick at Evanston's "No Exit" cafe. Hearing her the first time, I made every effort to hear her every time I could make it. Her songs were riveting. While she sang that noisy coffee house was absolutely still, and Kallick's voice soared in the space. I probably romanticize the experience nearly fifty years later, but Kallick's singing remains for me one of my most memorable musical experiences (in a life full of live music). |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: GUEST,a student Date: 08 Oct 05 - 01:12 PM Does all this mean Dodi is not around anymore? I took dulcimer and life lessons from her when I was a teenager. I spent many hours tagging along on tasks with her as she told me the ways to live well in her earthy voice. |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: frogprince Date: 04 Feb 05 - 09:51 PM Dodi was considered at least a local legend by about '72, nut wasn't above playing the little "Broken Wall" coffeehouse when I was on staff there then. Lovely singer, and from that brief exposure came off as very nice people. |
Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 04 Feb 05 - 01:38 AM That site, wherein lodge my folkie photos, is owned and run by Bruce Kallick, Kathy's dad. Dodi is Kathy's mother---and she had one of the most subtle and enchanting voices for singing American folk songs gently and laid back. And Kathy has the same voice with all her mom's phrasing ---which is what, in my opinion, truly made Dodi's voice so special. Kathy has a bigger and more polished voice---perfect for the bluegrass interpritations she does so well with her fine band called The Good Ol' Persons out there in California. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: DADGBE Date: 30 Mar 04 - 07:05 PM Hi Art, Sorry that I'm not in your folk scene photo books. You and I have been circling each other for decades without actually colliding. I've gotten close but missed you in Chicago, Sharon, CT and other points in between. I was Sandy and Caroline's accompanist on "I've Got a Song." Best regards, Ray Frank (DADGBE) |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: DADGBE Date: 30 Mar 04 - 12:22 PM In 1969 of so, I was kid out on my own for the first time. Bonnie Kolok had just hired me to be her guitar player at Chicago's Earl of Oldtown and I was far from home and at loose ends. Dodi Kallik, Betty Nudelman and Jo Mapes were the three angels who fed, nurtured and generally looked after my welfare. Dodi was (and perhaps still is) a wonderful singer with a strongly emotive style. |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Mar 04 - 02:17 AM This thread (click) is not supposed to be about Kathy Kallick, but it has a lot of information about her. Was there another thread that should be crosslinked with this, Harpy? Sounds like I'd better get a copy of Kathy Kallick's My Mother's Voice. Don't know about her mom's voice, but Kathy's is wonderful. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: Phil Cooper Date: 27 Mar 04 - 06:20 PM My singing partner, Margaret, used to run into Dodi at the laundomat on Armitage ave, up to a few years ago. All I really know about her is that she was an influence on the Chicago scene in the early days. I think I met her once when Margaret and I were doing a short set at Mr. Coffeehouse at the old location for the Old Town School of folk music, which would put it back around 1986. |

Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: Barbara Date: 26 Mar 04 - 07:50 PM Web of Birdsong is a song I've known and loved since the 70's when people were doing it in the folk scene. It took me a while to find out that it was by Bob Coltman. He has one album out from a long time ago (vinyl) and writes the most amazing songs. One of his goals is to rewrite traditional ballads in contemporary tellings. Search the DT for others, if you haven't heard them, harpgirl. Valley Forge is very powerful, Last Minstrel Show a slow sad story of the end of an era, Lonesome Robin a bittersweet retelling of Robin Hood's death... all different, all good. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: harpgirl Date: 26 Mar 04 - 10:36 AM Hi Barbara, Nice to see you on this thread and I always read your posts because I know you are a wealth of information. I bought "My Mother's Voice" this week because I thought Kathy was a Mudcatter, Joe. Her father has also posted her I believe. then I read Art's posts on Dodi Kallick and thought we should have some more archived information here about them all. Web of Birdsong, which Kathy does on this CD is by Bob Coltman, I believe his name is, and is contemporary but a beautiful song, nonetheless. The CD is topflight with wonderful duets and harmony and my only complaints (you know I'd have some!) are that there is no autoharp on it and the wrapper was hard to get off! She sings with Laurie Lewis and Peter Rowan, among others and I am mad for this record and Kathy's approach to music. I hereby offer my services on her next, or anyone's next CD as an autoharper! So could we put these threads together in a tribute to Dodi's musical legacy to the folk community? love, harpgirl |
Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: Barbara Date: 26 Mar 04 - 02:37 AM There's some information here, harpgirl: My Mother's Voice. I didn't do a very exhaustive search, just looked up Kathy. I've met her several times out here in the west, and found her open and kind, and a good harmony teacher. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Dodi Kallick: What do you know? From: musicmick Date: 26 Mar 04 - 12:52 AM I met Dodi at Fox Hollow in '68 and I visited her in Winetca that fall. I, too, would love to hear more about her. Betty Nudleman told me that she had seen Dodi's daughter a few years ago. (Herb and Betty were members of the original Golden Ring). |
