If the song has been recorded and issued to the public, you DON'T NEED TO GET PERMISSION TO RECORD IT!

You do, however, have to pay the mechanical royalties for use of it, but that's fairly easy. Check with the publisher (listed on the record, or available through the record company) or a performing rights organization. I don't know who that would be in England, but some one here should be able to steer you to it.

Upon futher research of my music collection I've discovered that it was Gavin Byers that recorded the affor mentioned album. Sorry!

Ronnie Browne still has control of the Corries releases from about 1974 onwards, when they formed their own Dara label. All of the Corries pre 1974 material was recorded for record companies who still retain control of all of that material. It is this material which companies like BGO are getting permission to re-release under their own label on CD. ----------------------------------------------------------

If I understand the history of the song properly it was Ronnie Browne who did a lot of the publicizing of the song as a possible national anthem after Roy died. Possibly the copyright rests with him as well. Ronnie has put out a CD called Battle Songs and Ballads on the Scotdisc label. The CD had the street address on the back BUT the web came through again. Searching for Scotdisc gave me a site with the addresses of ALL the UK recording companies. The entry was as follows.

I am trying to find out how to gain permission to record this song by Roy Williamson who I understand died in 1990. The song is the unofficial Scottish National anthem, and the song for at least one football team, but I don't think it is in the public domain. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank-you Bob Rowe

The song was written by the late Roy Williamson of the Corries and recorded on their album "Flower of Scotland", available from BBC Enterprises. It's been recorded by who-knows-how-many artists since it was written, but this one from the "horse's mouth" is the best I've heard.
