Pleased to hear people are interested in the song - although I'm credited with it, listening to Bill talking about "tramp threshing" and the jobs associated with it , the song just about wrote itself.
Thanks for the website mention Anahata, (www.whaleyfletcher.co.uk) and I promise I'll keep it up to date!

The clicky to the website worked for me last night and this morning. If the email link is what's not working for you, ring Dave on 01205 290562 for CDs as the website suggests.

Eee by gum - Follow the Drum! I first saw these two guys in the seventies, can't tell you where, it is too long ago. I particularly remember them singing 'Success to the Farmer'. Blew me away - brilliant. I've just tried their web site and it's not available! So can anyone tell me where I can buy any of their CDs, been after one for years. Call me at bob.argeebee@btinternet.com I would be so grateful. Take care all you 'yellowbellies'!

See these gentlemen at the Red Deer, Pitt Street, Sheffield, on Thursday 13 January from about 20:30.
Tickets 4 quid in advance from 0114 2470099. Otherwise take your chance on getting in for 5 quid, as it's a small upstairs room.
(Lots of great beers downstairs.)

It's a chorus song club, so they should be in their element.

By the way, I don't know if the world has noticed but Bill and Dave now have their own Web Site. They had one before, but hosted on the Living Tradition Mag site, and out of their control - hopefully this one will be kept up to date: if not, Dave's now only got himself to blame!

Perhaps the personal stories behind songs like this should have their own pages for our delight and edification.

Anahata

Bill doesn't write songs, he just specialises in being a miserable old git :-) Dave actually hasn't written many, but he should if Follow the Drum is anything to go by!

Re Bass Concertina: one Ian Goodier is thanked in the notes for the loan of "the mighty Bass Concertina". Maybe one of our squeezebox slecialists may know more?

Incidentally, on the subject of big weights being carried, a quarter (as mentioned in the song) amounts to 448 pounds, two sacks at 224 pounds each, and Bill saw that as the job he preferred.

That's very interesting Sue.

The song is credited to Dave Fletcher. Does Bill ever write any songs?

"Great bass concertina !"

Anymore info on that?

When he was a teenager, Bill's Dad had a smallholding and at harvest time they did contracting work. The Drum refers to the threshing machine and Bills job was to carry away the sacks of grain when the drum had done its job. Huges weight and he isn't a big chap. Perhaps that is where his well documented hernia began!

A message from Guy Wolff about Follow The Drum on the Yellowbellies Cd that he purchased.

Quote
The c.d. arrived today . It has a wonderful feel . Have you started a thread on the c.d. at the cat . If yes I will add to it if you give me a thread name and if not do you mind if I start one ?
There is one song with concertina that is intriguing . What work are they going to "following the drum" ?? At first I thought meat packing because of one word used and then after another listen I thought perhaps cleaning out canals. I will listen closer . So far this is my favorite song . Great bass concertina !
End of Quote

Anybody know?
