Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let it Rain (sung by Johnny Mathis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Feb 10 - 12:30 PM LET IT RAIN—the one sung by Johnny Mathis—was written by Al Frisch and Sid Wayne. It was issued on "More Johnny's Greatest Hits" (1959; reissued 1989 & 2003) and "The Very Best of Love" (2003). I listened to a couple of samples, and they match the lyrics posted by Nigel Parsons above. Several other people have recorded different songs with the same title, for example: Sarah Brightman, Tracy Chapman, Mark Chesnutt, and Eric Clapton. There is at least one religious song with the title LET IT RAIN also. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let it Rain (sung by Johnny Mathis) From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 29 Jul 05 - 11:59 AM Doc Watson's "Deep River Blues" quoted above in Katlaughing's entry is his version of the Delmore Brothers song "Big River Blues". "Brown's Ferry Blues" is another song by the Delmores which starts of with the words "Hard Luck Papa Countin' His Toes". I think Art has confused the two. Another piece of thread creep I know but Browns Ferry Blues has some salty verses although you won't necessarily hear them on disc, and when King Records asked Grandpa Jones about recording some gospel quartet material he and the other guys (Merle Travis and the two Delmores if my memory is correct) what name they should give the group they thought it would be amusing to name the gospel group after a risue song. Hence the Brown's Ferry Four. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let it Rain (sung by Johnny Mathis) From: GUEST,Sidewinder. Date: 29 Jul 05 - 09:12 AM How old do you think Sir Eric ( soon to be? ) is Pauline? There is no Eric Snr. as his father was a traveller who left his Mother with child and never even layed eyes upon Eric (he was raised by his Grandma). His first recordings (on Vinyl) were back in 1963/64 with "The Yardbirds" and he has been pretty prolific since then with numerous projects. The best of these; John Mayalls Bluesbreakers (1966) Cream ( 1966 -1969) Blind Faith (1970) Derek & The Dominoes (1971/72) not forgetting his solo efforts -Slowhand, 461 Ocean Boulevard,EC Was Here, etc, etc, etc. All originally released on LPs believe it or not. Regards. Sidewinder. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let it Rain (sung by Johnny Mathis) From: katlaughing Date: 27 Jul 05 - 07:18 PM I asked Art Thieme if he knew anything about this. He sent me this by email: Could that be the song called The Browns Ferry Blues? One of the verses starts with those words. Let it rain, let it pour, Let it do a whole lot more (or something like that) Lord, Lord, I've got the Browns Ferry blues. I'm going back to Muscle Shoals, Stay there with my ma and pa, Lord, Lord, I've got the Brown's Ferry blues. I hear it done by Grandpa Jones, The Delmore Bros., and Merle Travis---called the Brown's Ferry Four. But I think the New Lost City Ramblers did it, possibly from Charlie Poole. Doc Watson too. Art |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Louie Roy Date: 25 Jul 05 - 11:38 AM The version of Let It Rain And Let It Pour that I remember according to Walter Donaldson's Web Page under his Biography he wrote this song in 1925 when he was a song writer for Ervin Berlin. He was born 1893 and died 1974 and wrote over 600 songs for various Artists.I can't find the lyrics he wrote but they have to be on the internet somewhere.I firmly believe the first time I heard this tune was in 1931 or 1932 when The Carter Family was touring the USA in their rickity old bus and they came to this little town in Idaho and their drum and spoon player sang this song.I hope one of you more experienced mudcatters will use your expertise and come up with the original 1925 words.Louie Roy |
Subject: Lyr Add: LET IT RAIN (from Eric Clapton) From: Peace Date: 25 Jul 05 - 01:05 AM Just noticed the Lyrics link on the above site doesn't work. Let It Rain By bonnie bramlett and eric clapton The rain is falling through the mist of sorrow that surrounded me. The sun could never thaw away the the bliss that lays around me. Let it rain, let it rain, Let your love rain down on me. Let it rain, let it rain, Let it rain, rain, rain. Her life was like a desert flower burning in the sun. Until I found the way to love, it's harder said than done. Chorus Now I know the secret; there is nothing that I lack. If I give my love to you, you'll surely give it back. Chorus |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Peace Date: 25 Jul 05 - 12:52 AM Clapton--Let it Rain |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Pauline L Date: 25 Jul 05 - 12:47 AM Guest, Sidewinder, please tell me more about Eric Clapton's song "Let It Rain." Is there a free clip of it somewhere? Is he really old enough to have recorded on LP? That's hard to believe. Was there an Eric Clapton Sr.? |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Louie Roy Date: 24 Jul 05 - 09:43 PM Arkie hat is a good tune but the original was written at least 50 years before this came out. |
Subject: Lyr Add: DEEP RIVER BLUES (from Doc Watson) From: Arkie Date: 24 Jul 05 - 08:52 PM Here is one set of words to Deep River Blues. I've heard Doc Watson do this. Deep River Blues Let it rain let it pour Let it rain a whole lot more 'Cause I got them deep river blues Let the rain drive right on let the waves sweep along 'Cause I got them deep river blues. My old gal's a good old pal And she looks like a water fowl when I get them deep river blues Ain't no one to cry for me And the fish all go out on a spree when I get them deep river blues. Give me back my old boat I'm gonna sail if she'll float cause I got them deep river blues I'm goin' back to Mussel Shoals Times are better there I'm told cause I got them deep river blues. If my boat sinks with me I'll go down don't you see cause I got them deep river blues Now I'm gonna say good-bye 'N if I sink just let me die cause I got them deep river blues. |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Louie Roy Date: 24 Jul 05 - 08:37 PM I firmly believe that the version of Let it rain and let it pour that I referred to earlier on this thread as Let it rain and let it snow which is the wrong title and I stand corrected, and I heard and learned all wrong many years ago was originally written by Elmer Grosso band in the late 1890s and brought back to life by Walter Donaldson about 1925,but I can't document this, but this is what it shows on the internet.Help I've gone as far as my limited knowledge will take me |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Peace Date: 24 Jul 05 - 01:35 AM Then there's Deep River Blues. |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: GUEST,Sidewinder. Date: 24 Jul 05 - 01:34 AM Then there is Eric Claptons self penned song titled (would you believe it?) Let It Rain. A song I remember purchasing on a compilation LP many years ago and I loved it then as I do now even though it doesn't sound as punchy on CD. Regards. Sidewinder. |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 23 Jul 05 - 03:40 PM Then there is of course: Let it rain, let it pour Nothing worries me I just go on singing With a banjo on my knee That being the chorus the song actually starts: Mother dear what's that there |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 23 Jul 05 - 03:29 PM Louis Roy, the versions I find of "Let it rain, let it snow" have been changed with lines like 'I'm chillin with my family,' and 'Homies at the table slappin' them bones.' I seem to remember other words along the line that you posted, but I can't pull them in. |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Pauline L Date: 23 Jul 05 - 01:23 PM This is an entirely different song. James Taylor recorded it way back when (early 70s?) and I love it. Let it rain Sweet Mary Jane Let it wash your love down all around me. Come inside and put it down. Let it rain. |
Subject: RE: Let it rain. From: Louie Roy Date: 23 Jul 05 - 11:49 AM There was another song named let it rain and let it snow a lot older than this one.I don't remember all the words but here is what I remember. Let it rain and let it snow I don't worry no no no I'll get a-long some how.( there was another line or two that my foggy mind can't recalland then this) You keep going your way and I'll keep traveling mine By and by I'll meet a friend, then you'll be the one to sit and pine So let it rain and let it pour,I don't worry anymore I'll get a-long some how There as another verse or two maybe one of the other mucatters can fill in |
Subject: Lyr Add: LET IT RAIN (from Johnny Mathis) From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Jul 05 - 09:53 AM Strange, the site allowed me to copy/paste. Here it is, LET IT RAIN Johnny Mathis Let it rain, let it pour I just don't care anymore Skies are gray from day to day Since you've gone away Hours come, hours go Time seems to move so slow All I do is dream of you All the long night through "Pitter patter" go the raindrops on my window pane They fall with ev'ry tear Through the trees I hear the breeze still echoing your name For, in my imagination, you're still here See the clouds high above Dark is my world without love Till you're mine the sun won't shine So, let it rain, let it rain, let it rain From the site Song Lyrics Nigel |
