Subject: RE: ADD: Mr. Sandman (Bring Me a Dream) From: Helen Date: 07 Aug 23 - 03:19 PM Thanks Jim. I committed the Mudcat sin of not reading the thread before posting, but I assumed that the thread was about the original song and not the parody song. My bad! |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mr. Sandman (Bring Me a Dream) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Aug 23 - 02:58 PM Guest: That would be Homer & Jethro. The exact lyrics they sang are posted above in this thread. Most of what they performed were parodies of current popular songs--sorta like the Wierd Al Yankovic of their day, but with a country twang. "Homer" Haynes played guitar and "Jethro" Burns played mandolin. They were also excellent instrumentalists. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mr. Sandman (Bring Me a Dream) From: Helen Date: 07 Aug 23 - 02:53 PM My first thought would be Nervous Norvus whose most famous song was Transfusion which we owned on a 78 rpm record when I was a child. I think from memory that the B side was called Dig. I'm having trouble finding a song list for him so I really don't know if he did a parody of Mr Sandman. Coincidentally, yesterday I just watched the movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Nervous Norvus was mentioned once. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mr. Sandman (Bring Me a Dream) From: GUEST Date: 07 Aug 23 - 02:21 PM Does anyone know who did an entire album of popular songs (50's to 60's) where they changed the lyrics to funny stuff. All were by male singer on the album my stepfather had when I was 12/13 ('61-'63) Songs were different artist originally I think. One was Mr. Sandman. Some of the words cracker's in bed, she eats like a rabbit...now Mr. Sandman that's a crummy habit. Any ideas? |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: dianavan Date: 21 Jan 04 - 09:18 PM Mr. Sandman is definitely pop (or at least it was) but if people like it and are still singing it, maybe its moved into the folk realm. My mother used to sing it but then she sang songs from Mahalia Jackson and Patsy Cline, too. I sang it to my 27 year old daughter (she had never heard it before) and after she stopped rolling her eyes, she asked me to write down the lyrics. Who knows? Maybe its for the fun of it or maybe its just plain funny. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: GUEST,Greg Durkin Date: 20 Jan 04 - 11:12 PM The last line of the Homer and Jethro parody is a retake on an old bluegrass players' joke, "I'm not a guitar, quit picking on me." Thanks for the rest of the lyrics, though, Jim - over a space of nearly 40 years, I had forgotten the first four lines of the last verse. |

Subject: Lyr Add: MR. SANDMAN (from Homer & Jethro) From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Nov 03 - 11:07 PM Transcribed from the sound file at http://www.megspace.com/entertainment/judya/comedy.html MR. SANDMAN (As sung by Homer & Jethro) Mr. Sandman, take back your dream, The biggest nightmare that I ever seen. Crackers in bed, she eats like a rabbit, And, Mr. Sandman, it's a crummy habit. Red lips I like a lot, One on the bottom and two on the top. You gave her a purty face. Not a wrinkle is out of its place. Mr. Sandman, she is a scream. The biggest nose-holes that I've ever seen Her great big flat feet hurt her when it storms. Her pigeon toes keep a-peckin' her corns. Mr. Sandman, get out of here. I'll take an aspirin and you'll disappear. Can't you let me be? I've got a guitar. Stop picking on me. |

Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Elsie Date: 03 Mar 97 - 12:26 AM Since it is clear that there is no way I can have a 'pure' folk/traditional page-(it couldn't be enforced, even if Dick Greenhaus and the Mudcat Cafe agreed with me), I think that Rawlings idea has some merit....and perhaps someday similar pages will be started for the other catagories of music, and there could be links back and forth to direct people to the best place to make an inquiry. How about it, you 'pop',rock, etc. music fans? Is there anyone willing to start a database of this type for those types of music..?For now, though, I really shall abstain from complaining.(Honest, Les!) |

Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: P.S. (Rawlings) Date: 02 Mar 97 - 06:22 PM One aspect of this is that this forum is a great repository of musical knowledge and history, and you never can tell when one of the experts here might know something that will finally enable you to track down what you've been looking for. Perhaps a song you thought was pop or rock or C&W is actually folk-based. But on the other hand, I agree that there is a danger of the forum going off-topic. When I started here, I did not realize the "folk" nature of Mudcat, because I found this page, not the one higher up on the hierarchy. Perhaps it should be announced on every HTML page that the focus is folk, but other types of queries will be tolerated kindly. |
Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Rodney Rawlings Date: 01 Mar 97 - 09:11 PM I myself have found this forum very useful for all kinds of music. The folk songs I like I like IMMENSELY, but I also like many other types of songs, and if no one shuts me out, I would like to occasionally use Mudcat for other types of queries. "Sandman" is a great enough record to discuss on any forum, in my opinion. Besides, the categories are often not clear. |

Subject: Lyr Add: MR. SANDMAN (Pat Ballard) From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Mar 97 - 02:09 PM Whether it's folk music or not, it's sure a fun song to sing:
MR. SANDMAN (scat "bung, bung, bung, bung—26 bungs in all)
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Sandman, I'm so alone (scat "bung, bung, bung, bung….)
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Sandman, I'm so alone (scat "bung, bung, bung, bung)
Mr. Sandman (male voice: "Yesss?) bring us a dream
Mr Sandman, someone to hold (someone to hold) (scat "bung, bung, bung, bung….)

Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Amy Date: 01 Mar 97 - 02:08 PM Ya know Dick, Elsie may have a point. In my experience, when it comes to sing-alongs it's hard to beat old Yellow Submarine. Almost everyone knows and loves the song for it's good heart and universal whimsy. Oh, its not as with portent as Kumbaya, or Follow the Drinkin' Gourd, perhaps but uninformed coffeehouse audiences will sing right along, just like it was OK. Now then, as to Mr. Sandman: Perhaps Blank might submit some examples of those many other places to locate this material. I don't happen to know them yet, and what would be just-plain-folksier than sharing such info. Thank you, Dick & Les for riding to my rescue, I agree-if folks sing it... A |
Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Elsie Date: 01 Mar 97 - 10:50 AM So, dick are you going to put "Mr. Sandman" in the database? And maybe "Yellow Submarine"? And everything by The Beastie Boys? Never mind, I give up- |
Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: dick greenhaus Date: 28 Feb 97 - 09:19 PM Don't lets fight fellers. Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Les Blank Date: 28 Feb 97 - 06:39 PM Wow !! The ph suddenly dropped from neutral to ACID. The threads are clearly titled. Don't waste your time opening them if you are not interested !! Try a little tolerance instead of trying to police a public forum. After all is said and done, traditional and folk and ethnic and Celtic and all the other adjectives mean different things to different people. Subject: RE: Req: Mr. Sandman (Send Me A Dream) From: Elsie Date: 28 Feb 97 - 12:05 AM I agree, this place will not be able to support requests from pop, rock etc. music hunters. It is already hard to sort out the requests for acoustic singer-songwriters. Isn't there some sort of rule about what gets posted?Every button I click to come in here says 'folk' or 'traditional' I wonder why people don't believe what they read? |
