The big question is...is this thread going to reach 100 posts...or even 101?

It's not actually complicated, since at any particular school it's quite simple and consistent. It's just that each school can have its own "simple and consistent" method.

Probably a majority of US colleges use the "English 101, "Physics 101" etc. to describe a "first course" in a subject. This usage is common enough for everyone here to recognize it as a "start here" kind of slang.

My own university used an 8.01, 8.02 (physics); 2.01, 2.02 (mechanical engineering); 14.01, 14.02 (math); 6.01, 6.02 (electrical engineering) structure, but I've only seen (or only noticed) one other US university doing it that way.

I suppose I'm showing my age by the fact that "101" makes me think of "A silly millimeter longer ...".

It varies in US colleges. The 101 course would often be a first semester, and 102 the second. The second year might be 103/104.

Other schools set up with two semesters (the full academic year) under one number.

Some schools use the "department name" with the number that indicates the level following, as "English 101."

Many schools appear to use a department/school number for the base with a two-digit extension to indicate the level of course. If physics is "Course VIII," the entry level physics course might be 8.01 (first course) with 8.02 following. Three digit "followers" might indicate graduate level (6.2xx)and/or elective subjects (8.4xx). Sometimes the "leading digit" in the "level extension" indicates whether it's graduate, elective, or "distribution" in nature.

(A "distribution course" is (usually) an elective from a department other than the one in which the student is majoring, and may be at a "survey" level or may just use different math. - Quantum Mechanics for Architects 8.459 or 8-457?)

There are "traditions" but no standards, and lots of variations.

John

Thought it'd be more fun and interesting if I was vague:-)

As in US college courses i.e. XXXXXXX 101. I presume it means (from colloquial usage I've heard) a beginner's class but what does it acually mean? Something like the first lesson (module) in the first year of study which would be followed by XXXXXXX 102, sophomore year (2nd year to me) classes would be 201 etc?

I note that 101 is prime in bases 2 (5), 4 (17), 6 (37), 10 (101), 14 (197), 16 (257), 20 (401) and 24 (577) - that is as far as I can be bothered to calculate. Is there a name for these primes ((2n)^2)+1?
