Most garden fungicides (the organically acceptable ones, at least) seem to use various copper compounds. They wouldn't bleach the rug, but some copper compunds can be toxic (something John doubtlessly knows from using copper carbonate and black copper oxide in glazes) and they may stain.

Sulphur is also a good natural fungicide (high sulphur content is why strong onions keep far better than sweet onions) but I've only heard of using elemental sulphur, not sulphur-bearing compounds, and elemental sulphur STINKS.

Probably better off with sunlight.

maybe sunlight + some mildew potion? Even an indoor bulb that mimics sunlight might help.

Ah... John. Re your 11:20 AM post. Kill the mold ASAP. Some molds can kill you.

Thank you. It works this time.
I've printed a copy to keep for future reference.

Thanks.

I am thinking about baking soda as well as antifungal foot powder. The foot powder seems an elegant solution, killing to birds with one stone, as it were. I kill the mildew, and if I walk barefoot on the rug, I kill athlete's foot.

Ill try the link again for you Topsie ma dear:)...Same advice hope link works! Seems to working Topsie, hope it does for you too!

John just a wee afterthought...after I had aired, suntanned and dehumidified my rug I gave a heavy sprinkle of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda over the rug and let it sit for a day then I vaccumed the rug thoroughly. Four months and holding:)

Now all I have to find out is how to get the Basement outside and do the same to it...LOL. If there is a way I will find it.
Again, Good Luck

Jude

Thanks for the thinks & links, folks.

I'm going to reverse the rug so that it sits in the light of a window. I'm raising it off the ground a bit. I'm setting a fan on it. Once I've done that for a while, I'll scrub the discoloration and see if it stays off.

If not, the garden mulch thing isn't a horrible idea. Makes for a pretty stylish garden, what with my garden being half perennials and half discarded pottery seconds.

Soak yourself in alcohol and maybe you won't care any more.

Maybe just throw out the rug and start over. . .

Is the rug small enough to get into the microwave? Or, mildew being a fungus, perhaps soaking it with alcohol will kill it.

I read somewhere recently that bleach doesn't kill mildew, it only covers it for a while. Apparently oil of cloves from the chemist is supposed to actually kill the mould. This site says it can be used on walls but doesn't say anything about rugs.

Cheers

I scanned through the hints at MarthaStewart.com, but didn't find anything helpful. It seems that my mom found more uses for baking soda than you could possibly imagine, and I wonder if this is one of those occasions? I grew up in the land of mildew (Puget Sound area) and prevention was our best weapon. I vote you try the sunshine treatment and keep it dry and see if that helps.

SRS

There are mildew killers that are not Hydrogen Peroxide or Sodium Hydroxide based, and are claimed not to bleach any materials. They are usually for garden use, and are supposed to kill but not remove the mildew. My guess (and it is a guess) would be that that and a scrub would be the way to go.

Bodad's suggestion of a drycleaner's is good. They use chemicals to spot-clean mildew.

I detest mildew.....why?

I spent a long time clearing the basement in my new "old" Home.
One of the really nice Rugs in the basement had mildew.
A buddy of mine sent me a helpful link. I shall pass it to you in the hope it helps John.
By the way the mildew Rug is now mildew free and lives in my dining room...so this worked:) Mildew terminator recipe..lol

Good Luck John
Best Wishes
Jude

A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water, half and half, might work, but it, too, might bleach it out too much.

Bring it to a dry cleaners and try to rectify the underlying moisture problem.

Dry it out completely. Keep it dry for a while, and dry it out some more. And repeat. Then use the Lysol.

LOL. I've never tried it but I wonder if the mildew remover for the shower would work? Or does that contain bleach? spray a little and scrub it out? Just a thought.

Go to the hardware store and buy a five pound pail of silica gel, a roll of black plastic sheeting, and a roll of duct tape. Sprinkle the silica gel liberally on the rug, roll it up tightly in the plastic sheeting and secure it with duct tape. Store in a dry place until spring. When spring arrives, plant a vegetable garden being sure to leave two-foot paths between rows. Unroll the rug, cut into two-foot wide lengths and place them in the garden paths as weed preventive mulch.

Any tips on killing mildew on a wool rug? I could, of course, use bleach, but then I'd have a big white spot on my brown rug. Lysol says it might "prevent" it, but it doesn't seem to remove it.

eh?
