Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 20 Mar 07 - 04:11 AM Villan, a very sad memory, one of the all-time great managers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 19 Mar 07 - 03:54 PM On September 10, 1985 at Ninian Park, Cardiff, Jock Stein died from a heart attack at the end of the game against Wales. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Justin Litchfield Date: 19 Mar 07 - 01:32 PM I wasn't aware Jock Stein committed suicide. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Declan Date: 19 Mar 07 - 05:42 AM McGrath, The GAA include rounders as one of thier games. You could stretch a point and say they were claiming the original from of both Cricket and Baseball. In Irish mythology Setanta (who later became CúChulainn was a renouned hurler. I don't think that was a game palyed by oposing teams of 15 a side in those days. Just a man hitting a ball (or maybe a stone) with a stick, probably one of the first sports that was ever developed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 18 Mar 07 - 02:05 PM The death of Bob Woolmer was a real shock, the pressure the managers in all sports are under is brought home by Bob Woolmer`s death, Jock Stein the great Celtic Manager died in similar circumstances. This tragic event has surely left the Irish Cricket team and their supporters in a sad and chastened mood, sport is insignificant when compared to this. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 18 Mar 07 - 01:26 PM Bob Woolmer dead. I am shocked. Such a nice person. Started a new thread for him, but unfortunately put it upstairs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Mar 07 - 10:55 AM When you go back to the early cricket bats, some of them looked more like hurling sticks anyway - see here. I'm sure if the GAA put their thinking caps on they could come up with authentic Irish version of cricket that Finn MacCool used to play. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 18 Mar 07 - 08:35 AM This is for all of you Dutch supporters. Just to cheer you up incase you get a hammering from Australia. http://www.comedyclips.nl/clip.php?id=1433 |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Declan Date: 18 Mar 07 - 07:26 AM The excitement that Ireland's win over Pakistan generated in our local GAA club had to be seen to be believed. On to the Super 8. (I'd have thought they'd have upgraded it to a digi-camcorder by now). |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: John O'L Date: 18 Mar 07 - 07:18 AM Well I wanted to post a link like Villain's for the Netherlands since we are playing them tonight (or today where most of you are), so I searched "Dutch" in YouTube and this is what I found. I'm not sure about its relevence but it's too good not to share. Check it out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 18 Mar 07 - 06:37 AM Well I would like to wish England good luck against our Canadian friends today. Just for you Canadians Canadians |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 18 Mar 07 - 05:26 AM McGrath it won`t be the first time we used Hurling sticks as Cricket bats, when young, our version of Cricket didn`t comply with MCC rules, it is still well down the order as a popular sport in Ireland. The cheek of the Independent newspaper to headline the fact that one of the Irish heroes was an Aussie, and no mention of South African Kevin Pieterson as he comes out as Englands best batsman against New Zealand, Picking holes can lead to, egg on the face. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: GUEST Date: 18 Mar 07 - 04:53 AM I can never understand people slagging off cricket when surely they realise that they are only making a public display of their inability to understand what is going on. If I suffered from such mental shortcomings, I think I would just keep quiet about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 18 Mar 07 - 03:44 AM >>If that don't work then i'll stick drawing pins in my eyes! Skipy << Have you done it yet Skipy, go on you know it makes sense :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Mar 07 - 08:45 PM Maybe the game will take off in Ireland now. Kids using hurling sticks as cricket bats... |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: skipy Date: 17 Mar 07 - 07:29 PM I'm going to get a piece of wood & paint it, then I'm going to watch it dry, loads more fun. If that don't work then i'll stick drawing pins in my eyes! Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: John O'L Date: 17 Mar 07 - 06:21 PM Well done Ireland. And Bangladesh beat India. Interesting stuff. South Africa took 40 overs to dismiss the Dutch. They could be another surprise package. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 17 Mar 07 - 06:05 PM Amazing,SENSATIONAL RESULT, Ireland beat Pakistan by 3 wickets and are through to the super 8, it could only happen on St Patricks Day. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: TRUBRIT Date: 17 Mar 07 - 04:04 PM Now - I'm British -- my dad was an army officer and cricket was HUGE for him -- I remember having a small black and white tv when I was about 8 and my dad pinning blankets up at the window to make the room dark enough to see the images.........he was NOT to be disturbed during test matches. I remember taking a cricket ball in the eye when I was about 4 - can still feel it - ouch....... After years of living in the US my (American) husband and I returned to England for five years -- he felt that he really ought to understand the game and really tried. He took books out of the library that assumed you understood the basic rules....he didn't. Unfortunately, neither did I - some problem with genetics perhaps????? |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 17 Mar 07 - 03:47 PM Ireland now 63 for 2, needing 133 for a win, can they once again confound everyone and beat Pakistan, the odds would favour Pakistan, but unlike our Rugby team who presented the Championship to France, lets hope they be a bit more subtle. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 17 Mar 07 - 03:16 PM If England can't beat the Dutch, then I will send my wife back to Amsterdam. Mind you I would probably go with her LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Arnie Date: 17 Mar 07 - 02:00 PM Bring on the Dutch! They may have sailed up the Medway and burned half the English fleet, but we'll get our revenge on the cricket pitch! (At least I think so.....) Arnie |

Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 16 Mar 07 - 11:36 AM Very enjoyable Villan?, I was chewing the cushion in the last over, it was gripping, even chewing, and Mugabe WAS slipped in as one of the last five batsmen. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rasener Date: 16 Mar 07 - 07:31 AM I agree with John O'L. I love cricket and can watch it till the cows come home. Howveer freindly banter helps jolly up the thread. I watched the Irish match and it was very enjoyable. I love football and cricket, but I love cricket more than football. So yes Ed there are some serious cricket fans here, but we like a laugh and a joke as well. Come on England go beat then Kiwi's. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: John O'L Date: 15 Mar 07 - 06:18 PM I think you will find there are many here who are interested, and there will be plenty of cricket discussed, but you shouldn't expect that there won't be any silliness as well. That's all, no offense intended. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Ed Date: 15 Mar 07 - 05:47 PM Just listened to an astonishing, and highly enjoyable climax to the Ireland vs Zimbabwe cricket game. I can't understand why I need to 'ease up' I fear that you are missing my point.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: John O'L Date: 15 Mar 07 - 05:04 PM Geez Ed, ease up. If you can't have a bit of fun with sport, what's left? |

Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Mar 07 - 12:56 PM Why of all things! Those thieving damn Scots stole 6 wickets. No wonder the Aussies couldn't score well. SIX wickets were missing! Is there no way to stop this blatant theft and level the playing field? Spaw.....Who thankfully has no idea what a wicket is outside of Croquet and even less idea what it means to take one. Please don't explain. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Rapparee Date: 15 Mar 07 - 08:16 AM Cricket. Ah, cricket! Only slightly less exciting than baseball and slightly more exciting than watching paint dry. Ah, yes. Cricket. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: ard mhacha Date: 15 Mar 07 - 05:22 AM The Irish play Zimbabwe today, the Irish might have a chance if Mugabe and his cabinet were included in the Zimbabwe team. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: John O'L Date: 14 Mar 07 - 06:28 PM Unfortunately (or fortunately) it's not being telecast on free-to-air here in Oz, and it's on during my hours of rest, so I didn't listen to it on the radio either, but I see this morning on Cricinfo that the English support for Scotland didn't seem to do the trick. I have to say though, I am impressed that a Scottish team took six wickets and kept Australia's score in the low 3oo's. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,ib48 Date: 14 Mar 07 - 04:19 PM great for insomniacs like me,should have no problem dropping off now |

Subject: RE: BS: Cricket World Cup From: gnu Date: 13 Mar 07 - 04:50 PM Well.... we here in New Brunswick, Canada don't get any coverage. We a half hour of run downs and highlights per week. Sniff. |
Subject: BS: Cricket World Cup From: Ed. Date: 13 Mar 07 - 04:47 PM Am I the only person here who's interested? The whole 'super 8' stage would seem to be a mistake, but getting home from work and hearing Aggers talking to Sir IVA Richards (A complete hero of mine)whilst describing cricket is a delight to me. Every day for the next month too! Ed |
