Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Jun 11 - 03:58 PM I thought he died a while ago. I think he had Alzheimers, maybe that was what was announced a while ago? I don't find a cause of death mentioned on IMDb. Goodbye, Columbo. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Jun 11 - 04:14 PM I saw an article with part of a story about his daughter, and poked around to find the rest of the story: (December 2008) Adopted daughter, Catherine Falk, files for conservatorship, explaining that Falk has been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and, at 81, he no longer recognizes anyone. Later sworn statements from the Falk family, family friends and associates report Catherine has been long-estranged from her father and would not handle his affairs in his best interest. Sad times in a family. The UK article only gave the daughter's story that she wanted to protect her father, it didn't explore why the wife couldn't do it. Perhaps the daughter sent out promotional materials to support her case? SRS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor (1927-2011) From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Jun 11 - 06:43 PM There is nothing great that can be said of Peter Falk that he doesn't deserve. This was an American actor of the highest order. Peter Falk didn't do bad stuff because his presence made the project good. He is known best for the iconic and quirky character of Lieutenant Columbo which will live forever with anyone who saw even a tiny bit of the series. A complete filmography is below but his roles ranged from small to starring and he maintained that same high degree of excellence til the end of his career. Some of his least known movies are some of his best as well because Falk always created "characters" that fit each part so well. I have missed him since the Alz was announced and I am glad its over for him now but the American cinema has lost a real giant. And btw, he was one helluvan artist as well! Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor (1927-2011) From: BrooklynJay Date: 25 Jun 11 - 09:29 AM A fine actor. He will truly be missed. When he was quite young, he lost an eye due to a malignancy. Afterwards, he wore a glass replacement. I remember a story he told many years ago on a TV interview show: As a young man, he was playing in a baseball game and was called "out" by an umpire when he felt he was clearly "safe," having beaten both the ball and the tag by the opposing player. He removed his glass eye and offered it to the umpire, saying "You need this more than I do!" Jay |

Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor (1927-2011) From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Jun 11 - 04:18 PM I used to love those Peter Falk shows. I didn't know about Spaw back then, didn't even know he existed, but I think that Peter Falk's routine closely resembled Spaw's...the shabby clothing, the wretched heap of a car he drove, the shambling walk, bleary eyes, and apparent lack of comprehension of what the hell is going on, the vague mumbling, and the inane questions that seem to lead nowhere...but all the while he is cleverly leading people on to think he's a hopeless dumbass without a clue whilst leading them slowly and surely into a trap from which they cannot possibly escape! Very clever. The only real difference I can think of, in fact, is this: Spaw IS a hopeless dumbass! ;-D Anyway, so long, Peter Falk. I hope you find "all the marbles" when you get to Heaven or wherever it is that you're going. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Falk, American actor (1927-2011) From: Abby Sale Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:07 PM Me, too. No matter what he played, I couldn't help seeing him as Joy Boy in Pocketful of Miracles. It was a fine Damon Runyon play ("Apple Annie," I think) and Falk did brilliant Runyon Broadway characters. I think he got pretty good mileage. Several times on TV I heard him and also read him relate one story - refreshingly different each time... Seems very early on he was turned down after an audition. He mildly complained that he thought he did pretty well. The producer allowed that he was a good enough actor but for the same money he could hire an actor with _two_ eyed. RIP |
