I have done a quick count up of those who have posted and those I know of and the results are below. Sorry to the Scotish and Welsh catters but I don't know the counties as much as I do the English Scotland 8 Wales 10

It was in the days before I became a missionary and was sent to convert the buggers in deepest darkest Yorkshire (which I never did. You can always tell a yorkshire man but you can't tell him much). Where did you meet me? is that in your diary too. It reminds me of the night a few years back when I played at Stockton folk club. I had not played there for about eighteen years (because of my missionary work)and Ron Angel the organiser puled out a little moth eaten book and said "Now Bill Ye cant sing any of these songs" and gave me a long list of donts. I asked why not and he said "Ye sung them the last time ye were here" It seemed that since the opening of the club, about thirty years ago, they had kept a list of every song sung by every singer at the club. That list must be worth a fortune in the wrong hands. Bill |

Now that there are three of you over there why not organise a Mudcat Gathering we might be able to get a boat full with all the UK catters. There are now 134 on the list. As there seems to be a festival on each weekend in the summer. Why not link to an established festival this could be to the benifit of all. Mudcat would not have to worry about campsites/acomodation provision of. The festival organisers would not have to worry about a rival gathering on there established weekend. As to which weekend a bank holiday would be best for people who have to travel long distances. Anouther Thread to try could be how many UK Mudcaters are Folk Festival Organisers? The Whitby Folk Festival Week 2001 clashes as you probably Know with Whitby Regatter. This is due to the Tides. So be warned Whitby will be very busy pub space will be at a premium. But I'd also like to have a get together that didn't coincide or clash with a festival, which would give more chance to swap songs and make music together.
Do we need to go for something on a weekend, or would weekdays be OK? If weekdays are OK, one possibility might be to tag it on to an existing festival, as a kind of fringe event before or after. For example Fylde starts on a Thursday and goes on to the Sunday, so if we were to arrange to gather on the previous Monday or Tuesday it'd make a week of it, which I suspect might quite fit in with what Alan Bell is doing anyway, by arranging folkish concerts on the days leading up to the festival proper, which might make it easier getting approval for camping or whatever, and there would probably pubs which would have no problem with welcoming sessions.
Fylde is a long way from where I live - but it is actually pretty close to the geographical centre of Great Britain, and getting there by pubic transport isn't too much of a problem. (That was a problem for me with Llanfair.)
Or there might be other festivals where that kind of thing could be done. Walton in Essex for example, or Leigh-on-Sea.
Otherwise if it's a question of a weekend which won't clash with other festivals, there aren't many that don't, up until the coldish end of the year.
But the idea of a Mudcat gathering makes a lot of sense. A Mudfest. |

Not any more it isn't; it's a Unitary Authority all on its own (but still operates jointly with Cambridgeshire on a number of things . . ) As I recall (but others certainly disagree with this interpretation) the Boundary Commission investigated Unitary Status for Huntingdon, Peterborough and Cambridge (city). First time round they rejected all three . . Huntingdon wasn't happy, and at that time their MP (one John Major) had a degree of influence. So all three were re-examined, and Peterborough (alone) was given (had forced upon it!) Unitary status . . without any strong desire for it.
