Subject: world series From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:26 PM who's going to win the world series? |
Subject: RE: world series From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:32 PM Islam. Jon (who hasn't a clue what the "world series" is and is feeling bloody minded) |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:34 PM you've got to be kidding? |
Subject: RE: world series From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:39 PM 53, being serious, I am a Christian by faith and although I hope for world peace, Revelations, Daniel etc. worry me (through my own lack of understanding them rather than me being able to see the future) but I tend to keep those worries to my self. On that score and within my own beliefs, the victor is clear but that is of course I'm well off your original question - I guess it is a sporting one? Jon |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:44 PM the world series is a baseball game, and there isn't too many people in america that haven't heard of it. |
Subject: RE: world series From: DonMeixner Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:47 PM I have always wondered at the gall of calling it the world series when until recently only US teams played it. Canada does a great job of representing the rest of the world but until its a ball game tween Argentina and Sri Lanka, It ain't no world series. There are lots of Brits that feel that baseball is a provincial little game require no great skill. There are just as many Yanks who feel that Soccer(Football)is dull and played mainly by drunks who run. Oh well. Don |
Subject: RE: world series From: DonMeixner Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:48 PM 53, Did you assume that Jon is an Americain? Don |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:48 PM i've often wondered why they call it the world series, but only us teams play. |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 10:50 PM i don't know whether or not he's american or not. |
Subject: RE: world series From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Oct 01 - 11:12 PM 53, I am English although I have lived more years in Wales than England and I'm in England now - all the UK... Don, I woould say to me that baseball reminds me of the school game rounders (but I don't dispute the skill). Of the hitting bat with a ball game my favourite is cricket - a sport that many over here find boring. It is tactical but the same teams of 11 just keep on going... (see below) Soccer doesn't do much for me these days but my interest comes and goes. Of the more American style football games, I prefer to watch rugby union (even if fitnness levels and some would argue skill may not be as high as the leauge variety) to its rival. The most fascinating game to me is Australian rules - it really does look a good one. I'm afraid from my perspective, the American game is just too much, "stop, weve been going 1 minute, let's discuss tactics for 1/2 hr, change players aroud so we have a side devoted to that next 15 seconds play", etc. to hold any real appeal to me. I'd rather see one team battle it out with few stops and starts. Jon |
Subject: RE: world series From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 19 Oct 01 - 11:18 PM why is it caled the world series when it's only played in America? & why do american footballers wear so much padding & crash helmets? Are they all poofs frightened of getting hurt? |
Subject: RE: world series From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Oct 01 - 11:23 PM John, I agree with the "world series bit" but regardless of the padding and helmets, I think you will find they are very hard strong men playing the game... I think it has more to do with the way they try to hit each other in tackles but I would need to be educated on that. Jon |
Subject: RE: world series From: Amergin Date: 20 Oct 01 - 01:33 AM john in hull...i have wondered that same thing about the padding...i find it a dull sport... |
Subject: RE: world series From: Benjamin Date: 20 Oct 01 - 02:05 AM The Mariners! They just have to go 4 and 1 through the rest of the series with the Yankees and they'll be there. Well, I'm a Seattle fan. I have to pull for the home team. I always did in the 80's and 90's when they never got anywhere. Why not now? On that note, the Sonics will suprise everybody to win the NBA finals this year. Okay, so that's a bit farther fetched. Go Seattle!!! |
Subject: RE: world series From: DougR Date: 20 Oct 01 - 07:55 PM The Arizona Diamondbacks, of couse! No bias here, of course. :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: world series From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Oct 01 - 08:39 PM Why am I not surprised Doug? And just to give you assurance, we once again disagree......New York takes it all. Spaw |
Subject: RE: world series From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Oct 01 - 08:43 PM I'd say "Who cares?", but that would be insensitive... :-) - LH |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 20 Oct 01 - 09:21 PM atlanta braves, hopefully |
Subject: RE: world series From: Chip2447 Date: 20 Oct 01 - 10:49 PM I have to agree with Little Hawk, except I'm not concerned with being insensitive. If I need a nap, I'll turn on a baseball game, and lo and behold I'm snoring within minutes... Chip2447(born and raised in the USA) |
Subject: RE: world series From: GUEST Date: 20 Oct 01 - 11:29 PM Dear 53, PLEASE re-read this thread in the morning, when you are sober....and question WHY you decided to send such a thread to an International FOLK SONG/BLUES DISCUSSION BOARD!!!!
AOL has chat/discussion areas open to EVERYONE....please consider them....you will like them, they will like you. Perhaps then, we may all be happier.
Sincerely, |
Subject: RE: world series From: Art Thieme Date: 21 Oct 01 - 12:37 AM 53, Just for the heck of it---I'd like to know your age?! And welcome to Mudcat. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: world series From: Crazy Eddie Date: 21 Oct 01 - 01:03 AM I heard somewhere that the series was first sponsored by a Newspaper called the New York World. Thus, it became known as the "World" series. I don't know if this is true. Jon Freeman, I agree that Aussie Rules is a great game to watch, and i find Union more entertaining to League. Have you seen Gaelic Football, & if so what dis you think? There's also a "hybrid" game between Gaelic & Aussie Rules. Three games are played each year so that the Gaelic & Aussie Rules players have a chance to compete internationally. |
Subject: RE: world series From: DougR Date: 21 Oct 01 - 01:29 AM Gee, Garg, you never heard, "Take me out the to Ball Game?" A fine old folksong! 53, your Braves have got to do better tomorrow than they did tonight! Spaw: I'll tend to you when the time comes :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: world series From: Benjamin Date: 21 Oct 01 - 02:09 PM Doug, the time aint coming! The Big Unit will face his former team where he became a star and lose. Though if you think about it, Houston is team that really got screwed on that trade. I mean, they lost Freddie Garcia who's become an ace, John Halama, and short stop Carlos who's last name I cannot spell but is a solid player. Then Randy Johnson walked to the Dimond Backs. |
Subject: RE: world series From: DougR Date: 21 Oct 01 - 03:21 PM Yep, Benjamin, for lots of BUCKS! Houston got rid of their manager so maybe next year, okay? I'm not sure the DBack would have come this far had Showalter still been the team's manager. DougR |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 21 Oct 01 - 03:27 PM yep, the old braves are in a shitload of trouble, and my age is 52, that's why my name is 53, makes a lot of sense doesn't it? |
Subject: RE: world series From: DougR Date: 21 Oct 01 - 04:58 PM Gee 53, I'd like to wish you luck today, but you know ... |
Subject: RE: world series From: GUEST Date: 21 Oct 01 - 06:48 PM Braves will die tonight! HAHAHAHAH! |
Subject: RE: world series From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Oct 01 - 07:48 PM I thought "world series" could refer to any sport, so long as it was only played in America and a few neighbouring states. Maybe the Gaelic Athletic Associaiton should stop calling its big championship the All Ireland, and call it a World Series instead. And the Australians could do the same with Rules Football. And the Japanese could have a World Series Sumo championship... Great games all.
And so is Baseball. But I don't think I could ever take to that game where they have the squads of fellas dressed as Stormtroopers on shore leave from the Death Star. Too staccato, no flow to it that I can see. The diametrical opposite of Rules and Gaelic football. (But hurling is the greatest of all.)
Incidcetally, most of the other football codes are played by women as well - I'm not sure about Aussie Rules, but the others all are. So is there a woman's version lf American Footbvall?
(To give us a musical drift - after all, this thread wasn't labelled as BS - there was a thread a few months back "Sporting hero songs?" Anyone got any songs to add to that?) |
Subject: RE: world series From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 21 Oct 01 - 07:48 PM world series my arese! |
Subject: RE: world series From: Clifton53 Date: 21 Oct 01 - 08:09 PM What the Hull is an arese?? McG, some girls do play football here, but mostly in lower levels such as high school and youth football, the college and pro games are very rough, and size matters. American football players are very heavy and muscular, and enjoy nothing better than contact. I wonder what Thady Quill would think of it all. Clifton |
Subject: RE: world series From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 21 Oct 01 - 08:14 PM Whats Thady Quill? |
Subject: RE: world series From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Oct 01 - 09:49 PM He's the guy that plays third for the Arese Wipers. Spaw |
Subject: RE: world series From: Jon Freeman Date: 21 Oct 01 - 09:58 PM Crazie Eddie, I have seen a couple of Gaelic Football games and found them highly entertaining. Maybe one day what I feel are the best games to watch will get more coverage... Jon |
Subject: RE: world series From: DougR Date: 21 Oct 01 - 11:22 PM My sympathy, 53. However, I must admit I'm glad. Go DBacks! DougR |
Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 22 Oct 01 - 11:39 AM bye, bye , braves and go yankees. |

Subject: RE: world series From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Oct 01 - 04:39 PM You've never heard of "The Bold Thady Quill"?
"American football players are very heavy and muscular, and enjoy nothing better than contact." Sounds like the women's version might be much more entertaining than the men's. |
Subject: RE: world series From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Oct 01 - 05:08 PM The Yankees in 6 Doug me lad......the Yanks in 6. Maybe 5. (:<)) Spaw

Subject: RE: world series From: 53 Date: 26 Oct 01 - 09:48 PM Well, Spaw, Doug, you are both right. Bob and I both like baseball,(AND guitar, and cheering for the good ole' USA.) But yes, Bob, did start this thread. He does start some threads people like quite a bit - after they find out what they're about. :) Glenda
