Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: GUEST,The Vulgar Boatman Date: 01 Aug 06 - 06:10 PM OK, we've spotted the troll, had a laugh - now answer me this: I've been a member of several English academic and musical societies, from the Galpin Society to the Northumbrian Pipers....why do they all have a member in Fort Worth, Texas? Just thought I'd ask.... |

Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 Aug 06 - 06:45 PM Perhaps Fort Worth is the perfect microcosm of every type of society in the world? Scary thought. Doesn't GWB hail from around there? Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Kaleea Date: 01 Aug 06 - 07:27 PM so, 8, you want only Americans on the Mudcat? That'll be really interesting, cause I've never before shared about folk Music with someone from Argentina or Chile or El Salvador. By the way, 8, can you point to the Choctaw Nation or the Cherokee Nation on a world map? I only ask, cause some of my relatives were of those nations, & sometimes those nations can be kinda hard to find on maps. And, by the way, an American friend of mine, who lives about 1/2 an hour south of me, was teaching me some of the folk music from his family just the other day. He taught me a song called, "Sin tu Amor." It's really fun to sing, & I can accompany myself on my Guitar. Where does he live? My friend lives in Tijuana. I have lots of American more friends with I enjoy sharing folk Music. One lives near Vancouver. Another lives on a Polynesian island. I visited her family once, & I never heard such beautiful traditional Music. The lush vocals were angelic! I recall singing a Venezuelan song when I was in college. Maybe a lovely American from Venezuelan can help refresh my memory about correct pronunciation. I'll really miss all of the non-Americans very, very much. But, wow! It will be quite interesting to have an all American forum. By the way, 8, can you find Cyberspace on a world map? |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Aug 06 - 08:51 PM "The term, "Yank", is, of course a shortened version of the 19th century song title, "Yankee Doodle", " ... and of course, you do know what part of the body the slang term "doodle" referes to? |

Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: SharonA Date: 02 Aug 06 - 12:34 AM Two Eight... say it fast and it sounds like "Twait", which is close to "Twit"... Not that I personally would use the word "twit" in normal conversation, being an Amurkun and all... But as long as we're discussing Brits on Mudcat, I'd like to take this opportunity to express one of my pet peeves about Mudcat: When UK 'Catters post threads about a festival or other event, it's often unclear to those of us across the pond that the event is in the UK, even after opening the thread and reading a few posts. I think they forget that many towns in the US are named after towns and regions of the UK. (Case in point: I grew up in Warrington................ Pennsylvania!) I don't always recognize the Mudcat names on these threads as being those of British 'Catters, so I sometimes get confused about the location of the announced events, and it becomes annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced thie! So please, guys, don't just assume that everyone who visits Mudcat knows all about England's folk community. Remember that this is, as many here have pointed out, a worldwide forum, and please specify where in the world your announced event is taking place! Thank you!! |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Big Al Whittle Date: 02 Aug 06 - 02:42 AM as a native of Boston, lincolnshire - I can see that. all i can say is, sorry. if you had beeen to Warrington, Cheshire - you would understand why it would occur to no one this side of the pond that there was a tribute act going round. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: s&r Date: 02 Aug 06 - 03:20 AM According to Partridge: .....Yankee derives from US Indian 'Yangees' for English, or from 'Jankee' Dutch for little John Stu |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: GUEST,sorefingers Date: 02 Aug 06 - 06:08 AM We have a BS section and lots of non-folkie stuff reamains in the folkie section. But we could also have a UK section/page for them and keep our crap separate. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Aug 06 - 08:22 AM I'm interested in US folk music, as are many of us UK mudcatters. And many US 'catters share an interest in the folk music of the British Isles, and other English-speaking places. And of course it's not just folk music in the English language (it mostly is, but then it's an English language forum). So if we are careful enough to use terms that are understandable by most people with a good command of English - what's the problem? Can someone who starts a thread claim to own it? No. The thread belongs to Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: leftydee Date: 02 Aug 06 - 01:16 PM Come on 282, get with the program. I think it's a great thing to get input from other places in the world. It can expand yer horizons with leavin' yer desk! |

I think they forget that many towns in the US are named after towns and regions of the UK. (Case in point: I grew up in Warrington................ Pennsylvania!)" I've had the same problem with events in the US, Sharon. We have a Portland of our own and I was quite disappointed the first time I realised that an event I would have loved to attend would necessitate a trip to Oregon. Cuts both ways I guess, but, as it is an American forum it would not be courteous to suggest that you should identify US posts. I take your point though and will continue to slide a UK tag into anything that I post about events on our side of the pond. Don T. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: GUEST,Nigel Spencer Date: 14 Aug 06 - 10:52 AM What an odd thread. As that great English folk singer (not!), Ian Brown once said, "It's not where you're from, it's where you're at!" |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Janie Date: 14 Aug 06 - 09:15 PM I live in the South. Guess I'm not welcomed either. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Big Al Whittle Date: 15 Aug 06 - 01:13 AM south where...? of course you're welcome! |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Haruo Date: 15 Aug 06 - 02:17 AM So far 282 hasn't posted to this thread since he started it. As for where Hull is, it's across the bridge from Ottawa. Haruo |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Aug 06 - 12:28 PM That might be where Hull is, but the great city of Kingston upon Hull (the place more usually referred to on this forum) is in the United Kingdom. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: PoppaGator Date: 16 Aug 06 - 12:29 AM No way I'm reading all 284+ messages at this point. I read the first 20 or so several days ago, and will offer this observation: The UK members seem to be ever-increasingly active, and to be posting a higher percentage of the posts than before. Maybe fewer Americans are joining up while Brits (and other English-speakers) continue to grow in numbers. Maybe current US members are participating less than before. I don't know. I quit my daily Mudcat "fix" pretty suddenly almost exactly one year ago, on Aug 29 '05, thanks to Hurricane Katrina. I'm gradually starting to check in, and occasionally post, with increasing frequency. I have the distinct impression of a much heavier British presence than a year ago. The demographic shift away from the US is undoubtedly more noticeable to me now, as I return after a year's near-total absense, than it would have been had I been present every day, barely noticing a gradual change... |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Ebbie Date: 16 Aug 06 - 02:06 PM PG, that is easily fixed- if Americans would like to be more in evidence they/we need to post more. I like reading threads and posts from non-Americans. The world feels smaller to me nowadays. I have heard the occasional comment that there aren't any interesting threads at the moment- well, if they'd start one, there would be. |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Bill t' bodger Date: 16 Aug 06 - 06:17 PM the answer to "all non-Yanks please stay off my threads" is simple NO |
Subject: RE: BS: All non-Yanks please stay off my threads From: Peace Date: 16 Aug 06 - 06:20 PM You are much more polite than me, and much more succinct. I woulda used two words totalling seven letters. |
