Well, yes, Jon, over a hundred postings and no mention of the man himself, actually I was more amused to see that nobody on Mudcat apart from me has ever heard J P Cormier.

J.P. Cormier? I have seen him live while in Cape Breton and have a couple of his CDs and he is a magician! Well worthy of inclusion in the list!

Yep, a whole bunch of great guitarists. Listen to them all, then when you want to hear THE VERY BEST, go get anything Clarence White ever did!

Actually Matt, I meant the JP Cormier who led the standing ovation for Tony McManus at the Celtic Colors Festival in Nova Scotia some years back. But yes, they are one and the same.

Martin Simpson, Ian Carr, Pat Donahue, Tony McMannus, Jon Renbourne, Arty McGlynn, Martin Carthy and just about any guitarist brave enough to face an audience without tons of electronic tom-foolery.

Ian Carr, and Ed Boyd, -both mentioned earlier,
but also Jack Evans, from "the easy club". A guitarist with some really great chords in the right places, and a fantastic swingy style for accompanying trad tunes.

Thanks Flatop and steve.

Since this is for "favourite" guitarists, rather than "best" guitarists, I can leave out Tuck Andress, and probably 25 completely anonymous pickers who got married, had kids, and stayed local.

Favourites? Joseph Spence, Estil C Ball, Tony Quarrington, Eldon Shamblin, Bob Dylan, Charlie waller, Doc Watson.

And the great Alton Delmore.

Rick

Did anyone mention Jed Foley yet? I was very impressed with his playing when I saw him with Patrick Street recently. And Howard Lees, a very tasteful player indeed.

Geez...I have so many favourites it's hard to pick individuals out but I agree with most of those mentioned above and will be checking out those who've been mentioned that I didn't know of before.

NOT in any particular order, Tommy Emmanuel, Les Paul, don't forget Mary Ford!, Chet Atkins, Charro (she's a highly trained classical performer), Andre Segovia, Joe Pass, George Benson, Merle Travis, Christopher Parkening, Laurindo Almeida, Django Reinhardt, Stephen Bennett-the harp guitar is breathtaking, Pat Kirtley, B. B. King, and a certain hawaiian man I once knew.

I know it was a technical fad but I thought Stanly Jordon was quite unique playing the guitar like a piano. (both hands fingering at the same time.)
