Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Spartacus Date: 29 Apr 03 - 08:58 AM Ok. to "guest" (who could be any one person or group of people but won't use a name) :First, some people (maybe not you, but others) in this thread have basically suggested that because the Chicks sell records they must be good. Second, I hate to ruin your conspriacy theory, but the majority of the media is Democratic. If you really think the "republican media" has an agenda to ruin the Dixie Chicks career....well....you should find a hobby. Finally, Frank Zappa was an amazing musician. We can all argue about who we like and don't like because that's an opinion. Frank Zappa was a good musician. He had a great deal of knowledge about music, and ability to use it on quite a few instruments. This is not open for debate, it's a fact. If you don't like what he does with his knowlege of music, fine. But he knows more about music that all three of the Dixie Chicks put together. To Don Firth. I too know how to play a handful of stringed insruments. The two sisters in the band are reasonably good at playing their instruments. I never claimed that they weren't. I doubt you know the Dixie chicks as people, so maybe you should'nt make claims about what good people they are. My girlfriend loves them. I've heard the records. It's all 1-4-5 pop music with a banjo and a violin. It's like rock band, adding a washboard and a squeezebox and calling it zyedco. BTW...everyone has to stop responding to this thread...how am I ever going to get the last word in if you all keep responding? =) If everyone wasn't so far away, we could go have a lot of beer and one of those late night debates that ends with the drunken "you're the best, man" hugs and goodbyes, followed by everyone forgetting the whole debate. (I do this with my friends once a week) -Spartacus |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Peter T. Date: 29 Apr 03 - 09:53 AM Spartacus and I agree on something -- I think Frank Zappa was a good musician. In fact, I have heard a number of music scholars acknowledge that he is an important figure in modern music. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: GUEST,noddy Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:58 AM Hey what are we talking about???? Is it we like the chicks for talking out and insulting the president ? is it they upset Americans?? is it they posed nude and are upset you cannot see anything?? Is it we are jealous cos they sell more CDs than us ?? I am confused but thats usual. To set it right Kim C. I like the DCs got a CD wont break it and include Travelling Soldier in our set. |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Apr 03 - 12:12 PM Well, my Dixie Chicks mail-ordered CD arrived in my P.O. Box this morning, so I'll be listening to it on my drive to work. Meanwhile (thread drift but it's short. . .) I heard this morning that SOMEONE has set up a web site to try to relieve Michael Moore of his Oscar for best documentary. They claim Columbine is all fiction so his work isn't a documentary. Sounds like a dying confused gasp by Charleton Heston as he leaves the NRA and hopes to discredit a gun basher AND a Bush basher in one fell swoop. SRS |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Don Firth Date: 29 Apr 03 - 01:56 PM True, Spartacus, I don't know the Dixie Chicks personally, but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt before I decide to toss them into the Dumpster. My judgement is based on the fact that when push came to shove (i.e., in the Diane Sawyer interview), in essence, Natalie Maines said "that's what I said, it expresses how I feel, and I'm sticking with it." And the other two ladies supported her. This, despite the fact that they have a lot to lose by taking such a stand. To me, that denotes a certain strength of character--not something that distinguishes our current crop of national leaders. And no, I don't think you're going to get the last word on this one. Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Don Firth Date: 29 Apr 03 - 02:07 PM And by the way, as to the matter of who controls the media, the Republicans or the Democrats, ninety percent of the media is controlled by five mega-corporations: Viacom, General Electric, Disney, Time-Warner, and Rupert Murdock's News Corporation. If you doubt this, look it up for yourself. It's not exactly a deep, dark secret. This doesn't exactly look to me like a list of wild-eyed liberals. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Spartacus Date: 29 Apr 03 - 04:26 PM Don, The media control topic is another discussion entirely, and a long one at that. I'd suggest that you read the big news publications and decide what kind of a slant they have instead of assuming that you know the politics of the people who don't even know they own them. That's not a exactly a deep dark secret either. Why don't we stop before it gets ugly. We obviously just disagree. -Spartacus. |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 03 - 05:55 PM Like Fox News? Or MSNBC? Or perhaps the McLaughlin Group? Radio entertainers trying to pass themselves off as policy pundits and their programs as legitimate forums for policy debate by and for informed, knowledgeable thinkers of the day--like Rush Limbaugh? Or Imus, perhaps? You appear to me to be one of the right wing "liberal media" conspiracy theorist nutcases, Spartacus. A man who follows the party line, rather than thinks critically for himself. Which is why you don't like the Dixie Chicks. The Dixie Chicks did your commander and thief wrong, and that was it for you. End of discussion. The only result of you declaring that you need not examine your knee jerk "beliefs" (I'd call it brainwashing, myself) and what The Party tells you to believe about the vast left wing "liberal media" conspiracy, is that you not only will not have the last word, but nothing you say will be taken seriously by many thoughtful, critical thinking people anyway. People like Natalie Maines, certainly. |

Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: GUEST,Chris Date: 29 Apr 03 - 06:30 PM In the 60s, Judy Collins said, "I've never met a really good Republican folksinger." But the NashVegas acts play to Bubba Six-Pack: Lean a little left, and we'll stomp your ass. When someone asks you the difference between folk and country, tell them that. And, while I'm entirely appreciative of a nude photo of three foxy lady pickers, I'm thinking it's what Dubya would call strategery: Lean a little left so I can see those cute ta-tas. I forgot what it was you said about what's-his-face. God, I'm getting jaded. Chris |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Don Firth Date: 29 Apr 03 - 09:09 PM I make no assumptions, Spartacus. It appears that you assume that I assume. I read widely and check out all viewpoints. Always have, always will. And I don't get all of my news from domestic sources. Nor, for that matter, do I believe everything I read or hear. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: Spartacus Date: 30 Apr 03 - 08:52 AM I swear I'm done with this thread after this....Don, I think your a well educated person. I'd actually enjoy sitting down with you and having a friendly debate about this another time. We just disagree on a few things. We all have something to learn from other peoples viewpoints if we put ourselves in thier shoes for a while and consider why they think the way they do. Enough said. Guest...You need to read the entire thread before you call me a "conspiracy nut". I don't care what those women say. I'm more upset that they felt they had to apologize. And I told Don that a great deal of the written media had a slant. You just went on naming television and radio personalities like you knew how the whole thing started. You don't have any idea what I stand for. By the way...I voted for Nader. Nice Try. -Spartacus P.S. I think NPR is tapping my phones.... |

Subject: RE: Dixie Chicks Undressed, Unrepentant! From: GUEST Date: 27 Dec 06 - 06:45 PM The photo is now part of the cover of the DVD "Shut Up and Sing" a documentary by Barbara Kopple about the reactionary backlash to Natalie Maines' London concert statement. As to their musicality and complexity as artists--they are maturing very well. I doubt June Carter was near as complex as a music artist at the same age... Love "Taking the Long Way" CD, btw. Comparison to Dolly is a good one, though I believe the mold has been broken by the Chicks. Nice to see they chose to follow their instincts, and not try and ingratiate themselves back into the Nashville fold. Not that they were ever really part of it anyway. Nashville doesn't exactly embrace openly independent women, especialy in-your-face, ribald women like the Chicks. Best thing that ever happened to country music--along with Roseanne, that is. |
