Subject: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 27 Mar 01 - 04:49 PM I posted a thread on Dec13th to say that I was giving up smoking and was really overwhelmed by the response I got from Mudcatters Your encouragement and good wishes was so important in getting me through the hard times and I am pleased to report that I AM STILL A NON SMOKER No one is more surprised that me - I had tried everything in the past with no sucess SO - many thanks to all of you - I wouldn't dare start again now {:-) |

Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: GUEST,Paul Miller Date: 27 Mar 01 - 04:59 PM Congratulations! I smoked for almost thirty years, so I know first hand how hard it is. You'll find that every day is a little bit easier than the day before. To all smokers: PLEASE do what ever you can to quit as soon as possible. It will be one of the best things you ever do. For yourself, and for the people that love you. Paul Miller |

Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Chip2447 Date: 28 Mar 01 - 02:01 AM WTG...Nutty, I semi quit on december 8th, I've had 6 ultra lights since then. Down from a pack of full flavor "red 100's" a day to 6 ultras in almost four months. Congrats and keep it up. |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 28 Mar 01 - 02:56 AM Sorcha - there's a new drug on the market. In the UK it's called ZYBAN and it subdues the area of the brain that causes addiction It hasn't made giving up totally pain free but has kept it at a level where I can cope Although it would be easy to say yes to a cigarette , it's just as easy to say no |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 28 Mar 01 - 02:58 AM I can now admit that I was smoking at least 40 cigarettes a day so the extra £200+ a month in my bank account is also a powerful reason to stay smoke free |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Mar 01 - 03:07 AM Well done, Nutty. Best thing for me after stopping (25 years down the line) was the ability to shrug off coughs and colds without them developing into a full blown 2 weeks off work chest infection. Sounds daft coz you need to be ill to experience it! You'll see what I mean though. Hangovers don't seem half as bad either....;-) Dav the Gnome, 7 years off the weed... |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Bugsy Date: 28 Mar 01 - 03:23 AM Someone once said to me, "You don't always feel better when you give up smoking, but you feel a damned sight bloody worse when you start again! And take it from one who's given up several times, but this time for good - Ain't that the truth! Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Lanfranc Date: 28 Mar 01 - 03:44 AM Well done, Nutty, from another smoker who is supportive of those who give up. I trust you will continue to feel sorry for those of us still addicted, and not become another intolerant ex-smoker. Nowadays I only smoke 100pc tobacco cigars, on the basis that a chum of mine who worked in cancer research told me that there was a school of thought that considered that the additives in cigarettes and especially the paper used are more carcinogenic than the tobacco itself. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Dunc Date: 28 Mar 01 - 04:26 AM Well done - Well done - Well done!! Welcome to the land of the non smelly and sensible. I gave up on April Fool's Day 1984 and still think that it was the best thing I ever did. |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Llanfair Date: 28 Mar 01 - 05:16 AM Well done, Nutty. nearly 4 months!!! the worst is behind you now. Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: jeffp Date: 28 Mar 01 - 09:53 AM Congratulations, Nutty! The drug is called Zyban here in the US, too. I started taking it the Monday after St. Patricks Day and my wife and I have set a quit date of April 1. Success stories like yours are making me feel much better about the whole thing. Thanks so much. jeffp |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:01 AM jeffp -- If you have any questions or if you need any support please send a PM. or post a thread The support I got was wonderful and helped so much |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: jeffp Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:13 AM Thanks, nutty. I've also got some friends here who have quit by using the Zyban. It's going to seem weird after 30 years, though. We've got a bunch of craft-type things lined up to occupy our hands in the evenings. I'll probably be practicing a lot more, too. BTW, one friend says his voice has gone up in pitch since he quit smoking. Perhaps I'll regain some notes at the top of my range. jeffp |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: katlaughing Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:22 AM Well done, nutty! Congratulations! Now, if my Rog would only do so. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Bardford Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:28 AM Good on ya, Nutty! From experience, I know that the first few months are the most difficult. After that, you start noticing things- like "Hey, my lungs didn't fall out when I climbed the stairs." and " Yikes, those smokers smell bad." Keep it up, this is a good gift you've given yourself. Cheers, Bardford |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: GUEST Date: 28 Mar 01 - 11:06 AM As quitting smoking is considered by some to be more difficult than kicking a heroin addiction, you can proudly say you have the will power to achieve whatever you set your mind to, even in the unfortunate event that you resume the habit (but have faith that you won't)...aside from all the health benefits, that's probably the most important lesson to be learned. It's truly an accomplishment that you can be proud of. You learn so much about yourself when you surmount a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: okthen Date: 28 Mar 01 - 04:20 PM Inspired by Nutty's original post (dec.13) I resolved to quit on Jan. 1st. I had quit using patches a couple of years ago and thought "I can do this any old time" 2nd time around even with patches it wasn't so easy. I started using zyban on 11th Jan, and stopped smoking on 16th Jan. I had a couple in the first week or two but it was hard work. I can't honestly remember the last ciggy I had, but took my last pill on Fri.9th March. I am told that I'm really lucky my doctor believed in prescribing zyban, many in the UK think it's too expensive. There was a thread recently about 2nd chances, this is mine, I don't think I'll get a third. jeffp good luck, make it work for you too, but you have to go halfway to help it. I was really s p a c e d out during the course and could happily watch paint dry, or muse on the beauty of doorknobs, I haven't taken a pill for nearly 3 weeks, so it should be waring off soon shouldn't it (?) Anyway, I'll be away with the fairies now, cheers bill |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Amergin Date: 28 Mar 01 - 04:24 PM Well, I have finally decided to quit myself....as of yesterday.....so if I seem any crankier than usual, I have an excuse.... |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: jeffp Date: 28 Mar 01 - 04:28 PM Sounds like we can get a Mudcat support group going. I am really committed to this. I want my voice back the way it used to be! jeffp |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: JedMarum Date: 28 Mar 01 - 05:13 PM Way to go! Best wishes for the next 25 years or so ... it gets easier after that! ;-) I never smoked long, but since I quit so long ago, I cannot imagine taking it up again, ever. Don't kjnow what I saw in it in the first place! |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Terry K Date: 29 Mar 01 - 01:14 AM Fantastic, nutty - I've been wanting to ask but didn't dare in case you'd weakened. You should now start to lose the characteristic look of a smoker that shows in the complexion and the eyes - it's apparently just been discovered that there's some enzyme that causes it - so you can expect to start to look healthier. Then you can start working on becoming a really intolerant ex-smoker ........... (smug grin) Cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Ebbie Date: 29 Mar 01 - 02:03 AM Nutty, congratulations! Brava! One of the pivotal moments in my smoking life came when my sister told me that I had a "smoker's voice". For some reason that struck home to me. I didn't like that thought at all, mostly because I knew exactly what she meant. In addition, since I quit, my vocal range, even though it is still not phenomenal by any means, has definitely broadened and every little bit helps. The part that I will always regret is that I smoked all during the years my daughter lived at home, much as she hated the habit. I think it's true that you can quit only for yourself, not because someone else wants you to, but I do wish I had given her that gift. I am thrilled for you, and for all you others who know that your day is coming... Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Chip2447 Date: 29 Mar 01 - 03:31 AM once again to Nutty, and to all of the rest of us who have decided to give it up, WAY TO GO...KUDOS for all of us.... |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Midchuck Date: 29 Mar 01 - 08:04 AM Good News! According to yesterday's paper, breast cancer is no longer the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. It has been overtaken by lung cancer! You really have "come a long way, baby." I realize that I am guilty of some fairly grim sarcasm here, but how could one respond to that news other than with grim sarcasm? Peter. |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Mrrzy Date: 29 Mar 01 - 09:19 AM Bully for you, nutty, and Amergin, you've made me very happy. Keep it up, both of you, and jeffp, and anyone else trying to stop! |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 29 Mar 01 - 10:00 AM Peter (Midchuck)'s post tallies with my own very unscientific obervation of the students at the colleges I've worked at over the last 30 years: the men seem to be smoking less and the women more. I'm a non-smoker brought up in a smoking household and I congratulate anyone who's had the sense to give up. Herself gave up not long after we married and stopped getting winter bronchitis. My parents gave up on retirement. My father is still going strong 20 years on but my mother died of smoking related diseases and so did my father-in-law (he was a doctor and always said it was his own stupidity, he should have known better). Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: okthen Date: 07 Apr 01 - 07:48 PM So how's it going? jeffp? amergin? cheers bill |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Amergin Date: 07 Apr 01 - 08:11 PM Well, I'm still quit and I plan on staying that way.... |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Ebbie Date: 07 Apr 01 - 08:27 PM okthen, also see the thread, Congratulations, treaties. Looking good. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Big Tim Date: 08 Apr 01 - 11:30 AM Very well done, Nutty. having managed it myself, cold turk, I know how difficult it is. My wife and I both stopped 23 years ago and calculate that if we had invested the money in the stock market we would almost be millionaires by now! |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Naemanson Date: 08 Apr 01 - 11:35 AM VERY well done! I was wondering. Now if only I could quit eating and take up some brisk exercise! |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 08 Apr 01 - 11:54 AM That's the bit I've found difficult - the eating or overeating - particulariy as I'm diabetic A temporary solution has been real fruit-juice ice lollies which helped with the craving as well . At first I bought them at the local supermarket but now I've made some room in the freezer and I'm making my own The exercise problem was solved by taking on another dog(canine type). So now I have two terriers to keep me fit |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 08 Apr 01 - 12:00 PM I quit smoking when I was 13. Took two puffs, and I quit! Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Peg Date: 08 Apr 01 - 08:40 PM congratulations! Everyonein my family smokes except me and my brother; coincidentally he and I are the only ones without major auto-immune diseases or chronic health problems... You should be very proud of yourself. I was not addictyed when I quit cigarettes, but I mught have become so if I had not stopped when I did. I have seen others unable to quit after trying seemingly everything. My mom tried the patch, some friends tried the Zyban thing, but in the ed I think they did not REALLY want to quit... obviously, you did. Well done. Live long and large! |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: Bugsy Date: 08 Apr 01 - 08:52 PM I'm very pleased for you. It's very hard to give away something which has become such a major part of your life. Mrs Bugsy has been on Zyban now for 10 days. It's her 2nd day without smoking but she says that the pills don't seem to make her feel any different. She's hanging out for a smoke! Did you feel like this? Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: BS: No Smoking Update From: nutty Date: 08 Apr 01 - 09:50 PM Yes - even with the pills its still HELL but the feelings went away quicker than before The pills helped me to say no and mean it Within 48hrs the nicotine has left the body - after that you are fighting the hand-to-mouth habit and the psychological need to reward yourself with a cigarette |
