Personal Comment- Like several of the Jubilee songs, this one, and the anecdote, seem to bear the imprint of the missionary teachers at Fisk rather than the students and the slaves who created the early spirituals.

THE STORY
The premiere of playwright and poet Adrian Mitchell's drama about   the   extraordinary Jubilee Singers from Fisk University Nashville, who in the years immediately after the abolition of slavery brought their great sorrow songs   to Europe.
The late Adrian Mitchell, who died suddenly last year, was a much loved and revered poet, playwright and human rights campaigner. He was inspired to write this play with music by the true story of the Welsh journalist who toured with the black American Jubilee singers from their University, founded to provide education and a future for black students, in their first European tour in the late nineteenth century, when they brought their Sorrow Songs and Spirituals to the rest of the world for the first time since the abolition of Slavery. The singers enchanted Queen Victoria, and the now iconic song Swing Low Sweet Chariot was heard in England for the first time when they sang it to packed concert halls throughout the country. Mitchell's play was conceived for the theatre but it has not yet had a stage production; this is its premiere; adapted for radio under the guidance of Adrian's widow Celia . Does anyone sing these arrangements? They're very hymn like compared to more recent arrangements[not classical] of gospel songs.

Your comment about the 'hymn-like' nature of the arrangements, however, is pertinent and will remain. Arrangements of the spirituals were made by ministers associated with the school, and, I think, a few completely revised.

Compare In that Great Getting-up Morning as "sung by Hampton students" and posted here, with the actual Hampton version, In Dat Great Gittin'-up Mornin' as printed in Religious Folk-Songs of the Negro as Sung at Hampton Institute and also posted here, in the thread linked above with In that Great......
