Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 14 Jul 09 - 06:51 AM I will be giving our 'team manager' Little Legs Padgett his instructions on way from Barnsley to Saddleworth. It's no more Mr Nice Guys and Gals this year. We will be like leeds United in the 60's and use every dirty trick in't book. Watch out Scowie Stan and Sid we will wipe that pesky lanky smile reet of tha faces tha knaws. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Hamish Date: 14 Jul 09 - 06:53 AM Be good to see you, Cath. Sunday's my busy day: meet the artist (shurely shome mishtake? - ed), looping workshop and sing out the festival) but I'll buy you a cup of tea or something stronger if you can get me in between. And, yes, I'm planning on the miniscule detour via The Old Bridge to reaquaint myself with Mike Stand. And, Ali, I'm not sure your influence over the weather has quite done the trick. Metcheck's saying "pleasant enough, if you don't mind it on the cool side, with a little overnight rain to freshen things up on Friday night and maybe some showers* on Sunday." I think the occasional Jamieson's will make it seem all right, though. *And we all know what a shower in Uppermill is the equivalent of in normal language. -- Hamish |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: nutty Date: 14 Jul 09 - 12:40 PM It certainly wouldn't be Saddleworth without the sound of thunder rumbling round the valley. |

As I'm firmly a Yorkshire lass - born and bred in Saddleworth - I have to admit being biased!! Don't forget, if you want to look at the whole running order, you can email me on aliobrien@btinternet.com, and I'll send it asap. Ali xx |

Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 14 Jul 09 - 07:53 PM Just seen the weather forecast for the weekend. LOTS of rain on Friday but mainly dry on Saturday. As I've said before - Bring yer wellies! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 14 Jul 09 - 08:07 PM P.S Do you still have to get camping tickets from the festival office before setting up camp or can you now pay at the campsite entrance? |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 15 Jul 09 - 05:22 AM Both Soldier Boy. You can either go round to the Festial Office first, or go over to the campsite - considering the lack of car parking spaces, you're better with the 2nd option really. And stewards will be selling campsite permits there - Tony and Dave on the Thursday / Friday. If you arrive on the Thursday, head round to the Wagon for the Meet and Greet Session which Geoff Miller will be running from around 9p.m.. Nice to see old friends and faces. Ali x |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Phil Edwards Date: 15 Jul 09 - 07:17 AM (That's odd - thought I'd posted this once already. Never mind.) Never been. Is it worth a day-trip or is it really geared to the full-weekend experience? |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: nutty Date: 15 Jul 09 - 08:08 AM Even without the Folk Festival, Uppermill is a very attractive village. I would recommend it for a day or a weekend. There's music in the pubs as well as the organised stuff and as most of the events happen along the length of one street (apart from a short detour to the Civic Hall) you can't get lost |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: John Routledge Date: 15 Jul 09 - 09:27 AM Pip - A full Saturday is enough for most mere mortals. Go for it. See you there :0) |

Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 16 Jul 09 - 06:02 AM Pipradish - email me for the whole Programme of Events, then you can decide: aliobrien@btinternet.com Saturday's probably the best day, with around 30 events, but Uppermill is a lovely place to be all weekend, quite apart from the Festival, as Hazel (Nutty) said. The weather in Uppermill today is glorious!! Hope it stays like this. See you at the Wagon 9ish for the Meet 'n' Greet. Ali x |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: folk1e Date: 16 Jul 09 - 06:16 AM Well I'm off there now! ..... what do you need waterproof pants for? Last time I checked skin is waterproof! See you all there! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:50 AM It's a bit breezy on the campsite now I'm afraid - just been sitting in Anne Yates tent (Chief Steward). Hopefully it'll clear up later!!! Quite a few on the site already. Ali x |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: MoorleyMan Date: 16 Jul 09 - 05:46 PM "Illy, Ali, Illy-Alio, Cheerily, boys, cheerily..." So sorry, folks, but it seems I won't be there after all - and it'll be the first year I've had to miss. I've got withdrawal symptoms already - this weekend just won't be the same... Save me a green triangle or an orange cream from the wars of the Roses as a consolation prize! MM |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: SussexCarole Date: 17 Jul 09 - 03:53 AM Car packed - off we go only to find that our remote village is cut off from the outside world by floodwater from the fields. Hopefully if the rain eases we should be able to make another attempt in a couple of hours. From one of Andrew's latest songs "Should we fly or swim or what?" - just don't ask about damp matches!! See you soon Carole |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Jul 09 - 08:14 AM And Noah he said to his Missus It's a while since we last had a lark! Are we going this year down to Saddleworth? As I'm thinking of building and ark... Just a start? And later... When they finally got to the campsite' The waves they were piddling and small. There were no shipwrecks, and nobody drowned. Not very Traditional at all... Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Phil Edwards Date: 17 Jul 09 - 11:26 AM I'm making a flying visit tomorrow - arriving around 11.00 and I'll need to be back ont' train before 5.00. Currently working out where to go and what to do - the current (cunning) plan is to get out at Greenfield, proceed in a northerly direction up the Oldham Road and see what happens. If you see a soft southerner wandering around looking dazed, give me a wave. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 17 Jul 09 - 12:24 PM Decided the rain has won so not coming for the weekend but will drive over tomorrow and Sunday so shouldn't miss too much. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 17 Jul 09 - 07:42 PM The campsite has a lake now - very pretty. And 2 enterprising stewards have made signs directing campers to the shallow or deep end of the swimming pool! But they're all in such good spirits that it's amazing! The Civic Hall was full for the concert - 400+ people - with fantastic guests including Eric Bogle and John Munro, and Strawhead. But for many the highlight of the concert was our own Hissyfit, who were just brilliant! Eric and John, of course, were just wonderful - there couldn't have been anyone in the hall who wasn't joining in the songs. Very emotional. Off to bed now - long day ahead tomorrow! Ali x |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 18 Jul 09 - 09:52 PM Brill news! Yorkshire won the Wars! Well done to all the artists concerned! Fantastic day - all events well attended. And the artists were just superb! Ali x |

Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: John Routledge Date: 19 Jul 09 - 06:16 PM Thanks again Ali and all who helped to create and run Saddleworth FF 2009 The final concert in Greenfield Con Club was a lovely way to finish the festival. Next years lineup looks great already!! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Barb'ry Date: 19 Jul 09 - 06:55 PM Still scraping the mud from my feet! However it was a lovely festival - thanks to everyone responsible. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 19 Jul 09 - 07:23 PM Brill weekend. Now back home recovering! Well done Yorkshire team for winning the war of the roses. Think ossonflags was their secret weapon ! Many thanks to Alio and all committee members/stewards/volunteers/helpers - brilliant work as usual. I warned you to bring yer wellies and I was right (and then forgot to take mine with me! - doh!) Loved sense of humour on campsite where stewards had put up sign announcing "Life Boat station" by stewards tent. I was one of the silly buggers camping in a tent all weekend but I am glad to say that the tent, although severly tested, did its job and remained watertight. Had a superb session outside The Waggon late Saturday night where entertainment was provided by The Free Sandwiches band and my mate Muppett. All in all a really smashing weekend. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: sid Date: 20 Jul 09 - 07:15 AM Hearty congratulations to Ray and his Yorkshire team for finally wresting the "War of the Roses" trophy from our sticky grasp and ending Lancashire's hopes of three in a row. Look after it for us - WE'LL BE BACK!!! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 20 Jul 09 - 09:33 AM Aye Raymundo well done . T'commitee has withdrawn it's dreaded 'Vote of Confidence'. Team selection were spot on. Tha can keep thee job, for now. Singarounds were as usual spot on. Get indoor camping (instead of underwater) for next year please. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Myrtle's cook Date: 20 Jul 09 - 10:15 AM Thanks to all those involved - a wonderful festival from the Thursday get together in the Wagon to the final concert. Great to hear old [and not so old!]favourites and make new discoveries. Really looking forward to 2010. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: nutty Date: 20 Jul 09 - 02:08 PM I know I put in a request for rain -- but I didn't want that much. However it did keep the mossies at bay. Couldn't dampen the spirit of the festival though - it was superb as always. Many thanks to all those involved and also those people who attended the workshops. Looking forward to next year already. Think I'll invest in an electric wheelchair though. |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: r.padgett Date: 20 Jul 09 - 02:55 PM Yes thanks to all for a fine festival and the usual rain Hissyfit, Mick McGarry, Zeke Deighton, John Greaves and our secret weapon (had we not run out of time) Mr Paul Child and me who were the Victorious Yorkshire team in 2009!! No competition can run without opposition so thanks to Scowie, Sid Calderbank, Stan Accrington and the Lancashire team Many thanks also to the judges!and the audience too Sorry I couldnt stay for the Sunday as I have had a full day at York with the Yorkshire Garland, Seminar and I am shattered now! Thanks to SAFRA, Alio and all t'committee!! and helpers Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Willa Date: 20 Jul 09 - 03:46 PM Just echoing all the complimentary comments above about the weekend. I had a great time!! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: 8_Pints Date: 20 Jul 09 - 04:32 PM A brilliant event, well organised and plenty of choice for everyone! Enjoyed many events culminating in the survivors' session at Greenfield Con Club, followed by the late night party in our campervan. Look forward to next year with, hopefully, drier weather. Bob & Sue PS Monty, our Labrador, enjoyed swimming in both the canal and the river alongside... |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 20 Jul 09 - 05:58 PM Thank you so much for the wonderful messages - I'm still on a high after the weekend. Hopefully, though, I can get some sleep now - 1a.m. Thursday, 2a.m. Friday, 3a.m. Saturday, and 2.45 a.m. Sunday is no good for my age! And I can't imagine who'd finished off the 2 bottles of Jamieson's which I found in the bin this morning! Maureen and Joe, and Dave and Ann Howden came back to my flat after the wonderful Survivors Session, so I blame them! Did you hear us singing Miner's Life? I still can't believe it took 4 hours to let everyone do 1 song in the final session - I found it all really emotional. So many highs over the weekend - far too numerous to mention. But I loved my MCing spots - some superb artists. And of course, seeing everyone again. Dave and Ann Howden say that my face lights up when I see people - but is it surprising when there are so many lovely people coming to Saddleworth? Thanks all of you. Ali xxxxx |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: GUEST,Tim Date: 21 Jul 09 - 06:00 AM Great festival once again Ali! Thanks to everyone! My highlight was The Young'uns - unbelievable! They made my weekend and that concert on Saturday night was amazing. I've never known a group get such an ovation from the audience who could have listened to them all night!! I hope that they are booked for next year Ali to headline because they are terrific and I know I speak for the vast majority!! Tim |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Vin2 Date: 21 Jul 09 - 09:12 AM Well solder boy, i was another 'silly buggers camping in a tent' from Friday eve to Monday but dispite the rain and spungy field (& no food tent this year), the 12th Saddleworth (my 11th) was once again a really enjoyable afair. Yes guest Tim, the Young'Uns were 'unbelievable'. Once again younger talent shines through at Saddleworth. Were there really only 3 of em, sounded like an acapello quoir at times; great humour, clever original arrangements of soem great songs and brill instrument playing too especially on the 'ice cream vam'. Great to see Linda and the full Hissyfit back again; the lovely voice of Jan Shevlin of Better Late; the hilarious New Ropes; always fab Box Fox and a great set and sad farewell to Eric Bogle & John Munroe as they retire from touring; + many more. Sorry i'm waffling on.....so many thanks Ali and all the committee. Roll on the 13th ! |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Alio Date: 21 Jul 09 - 10:34 AM You can waffle to us anytime Vin!! I'd love to book The Young 'Uns again - I just love them! They kindly gave me their new CD over the weekend, so can't wait to play it on the radio. Ali x |
Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: GUEST,youngfolkie Date: 21 Jul 09 - 12:52 PM BRING THE YOUNG'UNS BACK ALI!!! A full hour spot on the main stage next time! I think people will demand it next year! Awesome |
