This is the first time that I Post below the line and I do so because of and article that I find refreshing(in a sort of way.). It is a positive news report and I feel one that should be passed on. I did not check it out with Snopes.Com as I don't want to be disappointed.

Kat, I tend to keep my political views to myself, but if there was more of this by our North American and other Country Muslim friends it would be a good thing. In fact I believe that it is the Muslims who could contribute the most in this never ending ..............

There actually has been far more of this sort of thing than most people know about. The positive change is that finally the mainstream media is reporting on it. They have tended to mostly ignore it in the past.

Definitely worth a read. Brightened my day (and I'm only just up, lazy slug that I am). Thanks for posting it Adrien, and happy new year.

It is actually what most Muslims have been thinking and feeling for some time. I hope this is given more prominence so that fewer people smear all Muslims with the same brush, which tars the lunatic fringe. I do not think many Christians would want their religion to be identified with the rants of Jerry Falwell and his ilk.
Thanks for posting Adrien.

Thanks for the link as I have not heard of this on the UK news (as weather has taken over the headlines this past week)

We have been calling for Muslim moderates to speak out for years.
I hope it spreads,

Yet has anyone else noticed that our own Republican moderates are now nearly extinct?

Being a moderate is no longer the big part of the bell shaped curve.
Moderates have become the target from each end.
When the right moves 9 miles to the right, the moderates are left closer to liberals.
This is a lesson that Republican moderate politicians are learning.
They are dropping like flies.
If its hard for USA moderates to keep a voice, how is it for muslim moderates?

But on a positive note, the sun is shining.

You want examples from other places in the world, Beer? You got it. :)

Middlesborough Muslims condemn extremist march

Young Muslims condemn Wotton Basset march at an Anti-radicalism Rally

(Pity the national UK press doesn't report on things like an anti-radicalism rally being held in Bradford - but I guess it wouldn't sell so many papers.)

From the Muslim Weekly: Muslim leaders unanimously condemn Choudary

Irish Muslims condemn Choudary

From the article above: "His views were condemned before the Trinity debate by a Dublin-based senior Shia Muslim cleric, Dr Ali al-Saleh. The Iraqi-born imam said: 'The people do not represent either the five million Muslims in the UK or the 20,000 Muslims here in Dublin.' Mainstream Muslim organisations both in Ireland and Britain have been highly critical of Choudary's movement."

And from America:

American Muslims Against Extremism

How 'bout declaring a fatwa on fatwas?

"I don't want it, you can have it, it's too fatwa for me".

The thing is, when Muslim clerics denounce terrorism it tends to get comnletely ingnored by the media.

Here is an example, from January 2005, from Saudi Arabai's leading cleric:

A leading Saudi cleric issued a plea today for Muslims not to heed calls to wage terror attacks in the name of Islam. Sheikh Abdulrahman al-Sudeis, the state-appointed preacher at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, told pilgrims in a sermon marking the feast of Eid al-Adha that scholars must preach moderation to confront militants, who were using "misguided and void" interpretations to justify violence. His sermon, dedicated to the 2.5 million Muslims performing the hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, echoed comments made yesterday by Sheikh Abdul-Aziz al Sheik. The kingdom's grand mufti said the greatest test to the nation of Islam came from its sons who were "lured by the devil" to carry out acts of violence.

Sheikh al-Sudeis said militancy was not a valid interpretation of Islam. "Because Muslims have strayed from moderation, we are now suffering from this dangerous phenomenon of branding people infidels and inciting Muslims to rise against their leaders to cause instability," he said.

"The reason for this is a delinquent and void interpretation of Islam based on ignorance ... faith does not mean killing Muslims or non-Muslims who live among us, it does not mean shedding blood, terrorising or sending body parts flying."

The preacher warned that extremism would ruin the Muslim nation: "This phenomenon has expanded so much that scholars must confront it with concrete proof from Islam to protect our youth from its stench and putridity."

If enough reporting is done, perhaps the good news WILL get out.

I applaud those who are saying the right things, and I hope the message spreads....

Trouble is Bill, for the Rupert Murdochs of this world, Good News is NO News. They thrive on disaster and misery, and when there isn't enough to go round, they foment some more with carefully slanted half truth and innuendo.

On a lighter note, with tongue firmly in cheek, I declare that there is but one small difference between Muslim and Christian.

Muslims get stoned when they commit adultery. Christians commit adultery when they get stoned.

I'll get me coat.......

Muslims HAVE BEEN condemning terrorism for a long time, but that fact is seldom reported.

And when people like us try to tell others about it, we are ignored. I've been providing documentation of Muslims doing this sort of thing for years. It is always ignored. People want to believe what they want to believe about Muslims.

That is fair enough Carol, but what Don T says above is true as well. Certainly in our country, where the Star and the Sun are the biggest selling newspapers, there are many people, even among some of the Muslim population, who do not get to hear this news.

Ruth Archer you are correct. Good news does not sell papers. Hell it doesn't even sell here. This thread is already falling off and the thread " Canadian Imams issue Fatwa! " which is also a positive one may follow right behind. Yet negative hurtful ones will continue in the 100's. Interesting.

I think it's more diabolical than that, alanabit. Good news about Muslims is not a very good way to sell wars in the Middle East.

I picked this thread (because the title was perfect) to post the following now available as a free audiobook at Librivox:

Better Angel
by Richard Meeker (1901-1996)

In 1933, Forman Brown wrote, under the pseudonym Richard Meeker, a controversial novel called Better Angel, about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. This novel is regarded as "the first American novel to present the 'gay' experience in a healthy light." (Summary by Wikipedia)
