From: Dave4Guild

Brenda and I are quite fond of the following list of the songs we do but the problem is deciding which sequence to do them in!

Summer Before The War
Wait Till The Clouds Roll By
Teddy Bear's Picnic
Summerfly
Brigg Fair
And So Do I
Leaving Nancy
Lancashire Hills
Where Ravens Feed
In Spite of Ourselves

But why ten?

It's too many for a (typical) 45 min set.
Not enough for a 60 min set or spread over two 45 minute sets.
And leaves too many out!!!

Regards

Dave Bennett and Brenda Hart

Like Alaska Mike, I sing my own. But an exception crept in recently, as I became besotted by the Spiers & Boden version of a gorgeous song:

"Courting too slow" (Trad lyrics, tune by Peter Bellamy)

Excluding my own, other songs that I trot out from time to time:

"Ik zeg adieu" (trad Flemish, c 1645)
"Belle qui tiends ma vie" (French madrigal)
"Come all ye worthy Christian men" (trad hymn)
"The battle of Alma" (trad)
"When you are old and grey" (Tom Lehrer)
"Girl on a train" (Pete Atkin)
"The Flowers and the Wine" (Clive James/Pete Atkin)
"Love on the sands" (Jeremy Taylor)
"Drinking with Rosie" (Richard Digance)

Referring back to the 15th, 6:30 pm:

Thanks for setting me straight on "Something in the Way She Moves," two entirely different songs with the same title. I do indeed remember the James Taylor song after reading the chorus supplied by Guest/Augie. I just wasn't aware of the title.

Now, it looks to me like George Harrison is the one who copped an existing song title from "a contemporary and label-mate"! I'm almost certain that the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album (featuring George's very well-know and often-covered SINTWSM) came out at least a year after that James Taylor album.

Mea culpa!

The Beatles song is actually called "Something", but according to This site
the use of those words in the opening line was no coincidence:

Something

George Harrison

George Harrison got the idea for this song in 1968, after listening to a song by James Taylor, titled, Something In The Way She Moves, and decided to build a song around it. Harrison finished the song, and recorded it in February, April and again in May 1969 during the Abbey Road Sessions.

El Greko:

You can actually sing the bridge to "When You Are Old and Grey," without a cheat sheet? I thought only Tom His Own Self, and I, could, and I only because I learned it when it first came out and I was in Junior High, when I could remember things.

It's not all true, but too much of it is.

Peter.

"An awful debility, a lessened utility,
A loss of mobility is a strong possibility.
In all probability I'll lose my virility etc etc..."

Yep, still remember it...It's actually not too hard because there is logic in the sequence.

Does practicing in a group-home at work count? I just started learning/re-learning, while following a dream more than 40 years old. So far I've played (with a couple clients listening while I practice) She'll be comin' round the mountain, Bye Bye Love, Down in the valley, Red River Valley,Will the Circle be Unbroken, Silent Night, Jingle Bells (in July)!, Marianne (all the kids love Marianne, siftin'seashells by the sand.), Quinn the Eskimo, This Land is Your Land (I'd like to get the Canadian version), and a toughy I'm just starting to work on, Scarborough Fair. I think that's about it. Whew, Mike

Mike, 'Does practicing in a group-home at work count?' Yes sure, why not.

Dave, you ask 'Why ten?' No reason really. I was trying to get an idea of what people were singing.

Then when people ask 'What is Folk Singing?' they could look at this thread and find out what folk are REALLY singing.

There's an awful lot (most of them) of these songs that individually wouldn't be considered folk music. But as a whole they are what is being sung in the folk world.

Bert, a couple songs I neglected to mention are, Oh, Suzanna, Hey ho, Nobody Home,Go tell Aunt Rhody, Careless Love, and Amazing Grace. At one two of the group homes I work at, we have a music therapist that comes and plays guitar for the clients, though his repertoire is much larger. He adapts each song to fit in a clients name. For instance in singing, "Baby Beluga", he substitutes a clients name and adjusts verses around some quirk in their character. I think that might be part and parcel of the folk process. Thanks, Mike

For Bert,

Here's the other one you wanted:

ILKLEY D'AMOUR (Les Barker)

Ilkley d'amour, le 'ill where the Yorkshiremen go.
Ilkley d'amour et j'ai been there with mon chapeau.

Wheer hast tha' been since the day that I je t'ai vu.
J'ai been to court Mary Jane, chacun à son goût.

Ilkley d'amour, le 'ill where the Yorkshiremen go.
Ilkley d'amour et j'ai been there with mon chapeau.

Vous allez snuff it si vous allez sans chapeau
Ooh 't worms'll ate thee, les ducks mange les worms for their tea

Now this is interesting, and useful info too!! Didn't realise that Dave4Guild & Brenda ((hugs)) do 'Where Raven's Feed', so I shall now refrain from ruining it in their presence!!

For my two penn'th worth (not sure of some Writers/Trad):

The Dutchman (Michael Smith)
Four Loom Weaver
The Weaver & the Factory Maid
Anyway my Guru Said No (of course - when will this one fade away?)
Where Raven's Feed (Graeme Miles)
Jenny Greenteeth (Nicole Murray)
Port Mahon
The Rain is Falling (by & with El Greko)
The Last of the Great Whales (Andy Barnes)
Lord Franklin

And singing each one is a privilege, so many wonderful songs out there - you writers just keep on writing them!!

Tell me guys (used in the Western sense to mean guys and gals) are you deliberately avoiding songs that are in previous postings, or are these REALLY what you are singing?

We had a fifteen minute slot at an "Auden and Folk" concert, songs collected by WH Auden and printed in " The Poets Tongue and "The Oxford Book of Light Verse". We decided to race through six and dispense with introductions. Whilst we stuck to the words printed in the books, everyone else, including Carthy, sang the "time revised" versions. Spanish Ladies was the only song in any of our current set although Lowlands and Let the Toast Pass will probably sneak into the next gig.

Thought a lot of people were in their own "Time Warp". Then saw the first date of this thread was in 1999 and through to '04. Understandable.

So I'll join "Time Warpers Amonymous" if I may.

The list in '99 would have been different.
It changes with the years, the influences and the theme nights.

2006 it's :

"Gretna Green" Tony Philip's. Written for a Blacksmith's theme evening.
"What's The Use Of Wings". John Wright. Wonderful use of words.
"Banks Of The Dee". Trad, via Norma Waterson.
"Claudy Banks". Trad, via Alex Campbell.
"Colin And Pheobe". Trad, via Ed Rennie.
"Carrion Crow". Trad, from Alfred William's "Folksongs Of The Upper Thames"
"Barefoot Dangler. Freebee, from ElGreko's website. Thanks George.
"Dockyard Gate". Trad, via Pete Bellamy.
"Channels". Graham Perry, via Pete Harris. I was a "Lecky" on Union Castle Line for two years so I know the feeling in this one.
"Get Up And Go". Pete Seeger. Pete wrote this when he was 39! He thought he was getting old. Now nearly twice that! Nice one Pete.

And.

Listening to :
Well, just broke up with my lady. So.
"Breathing Space". Brian Bedford, via Artisan. Brilliant stuff! And wonderfull harmony singing. Check it out.

And :
Listening to and Studying :
Steve Tilson's latest Cd. of trad songs "Of Many Hands". Nicely done Steve. Lots of Golden Oldies on here, the tradition moves on.

And :
Preparing for Miskin : - to be sung in, Norwegian!
"The Cruel Sister" Trad, via "Folque". A Norwegian folk rock group, a-la Steeleye.

Chas

A long time since I did get up anywhere. (A fund raising concert about four years ago I think..) Finding this website is rekindling interest though. I started practising a few the other day with a view to starting finding a few local clubs, and I suppose the first ten would be;

Love Song of a Simple Man - Eric Bogle
Little Musgrave - trad
January Man - 5 x claims to have written it to my knowledge!
Cats in the cradle - Harry Chapin
Reason to believe - Tim Hardin
Bracken lift - Ian Mather
Boothferry Bridge - Harvey Andrews
The vicar and the frog - Stan Crowther
Games people play - Joe South
New years eve - Si Khan
