Brenda and I are quite fond of the following list of the songs we do but the problem is deciding which sequence to do them in!

Brigg Fair
And So Do I
Leaving Nancy
Lancashire Hills
Where Ravens Feed
In Spite of Ourselves

But why ten?

It's too many for a (typical) 45 min set.
Not enough for a 60 min set or spread over two 45 minute sets.
And leaves too many out!!!

Like Alaska Mike, I sing my own. But an exception crept in recently, as I became besotted by the Spiers & Boden version of a gorgeous song:

Referring back to the 15th, 6:30 pm:

Thanks for setting me straight on "Something in the Way She Moves," two entirely different songs with the same title. I do indeed remember the James Taylor song after reading the chorus supplied by Guest/Augie. I just wasn't aware of the title.

Now, it looks to me like George Harrison is the one who copped an existing song title from "a contemporary and label-mate"! I'm almost certain that the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album (featuring George's very well-know and often-covered SINTWSM) came out at least a year after that James Taylor album.

Mea culpa!

The Beatles song is actually called "Something", but according to This site
the use of those words in the opening line was no coincidence:

George Harrison

George Harrison got the idea for this song in 1968, after listening to a song by James Taylor, titled, Something In The Way She Moves, and decided to build a song around it. Harrison finished the song, and recorded it in February, April and again in May 1969 during the Abbey Road Sessions.

You can actually sing the bridge to "When You Are Old and Grey," without a cheat sheet? I thought only Tom His Own Self, and I, could, and I only because I learned it when it first came out and I was in Junior High, when I could remember things.

Does practicing in a group-home at work count? I just started learning/re-learning, while following a dream more than 40 years old. So far I've played (with a couple clients listening while I practice) She'll be comin' round the mountain, Bye Bye Love, Down in the valley, Red River Valley,Will the Circle be Unbroken, Silent Night, Jingle Bells (in July)!, Marianne (all the kids love Marianne, siftin'seashells by the sand.), Quinn the Eskimo, This Land is Your Land (I'd like to get the Canadian version), and a toughy I'm just starting to work on, Scarborough Fair. Dave, you ask 'Why ten?' No reason really. I was trying to get an idea of what people were singing.

Then when people ask 'What is Folk Singing?' they could look at this thread and find out what folk are REALLY singing.

There's an awful lot (most of them) of these songs that individually wouldn't be considered folk music. But as a whole they are what is being sung in the folk world.

Bert, a couple songs I neglected to mention are, Oh, Suzanna, Hey ho, Nobody Home,Go tell Aunt Rhody, Careless Love, and Amazing Grace. At one two of the group homes I work at, we have a music therapist that comes and plays guitar for the clients, though his repertoire is much larger. He adapts each song to fit in a clients name. For instance in singing, "Baby Beluga", he substitutes a clients name and adjusts verses around some quirk in their character. I think that might be part and parcel of the folk process. Thanks, Mike

I've been looking through these songs and I'm very surprised at how different they all are. Very few songs are in more than one list.

We had a fifteen minute slot at an "Auden and Folk" concert, songs collected by WH Auden and printed in " The Poets Tongue and "The Oxford Book of Light Verse". We decided to race through six and dispense with introductions. Whilst we stuck to the words printed in the books, everyone else, including Carthy, sang the "time revised" versions. Spanish Ladies was the only song in any of our current set although Lowlands and Let the Toast Pass will probably sneak into the next gig.
