Subject: KFFC......it's finger pickin good!
From: Banjiman
Date: 09 Sep 07 - 12:34 PM

Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club is a new venture by um....me! Kirkby Fleetham is a beautiful village in the Heart of North Yorkshire, UK (Near Northallerton/ Bedale) very close to the A1 and therefore within easy reach of Leeds, Newcastle, Teeside and York. The club will be held in The Black Horse Inn which is not only a beautiful old pub but does excellent food and quality b& b. It also has a great, supportive new landlord and is my local!

Th aim of the club is provide performance opportunities for the cream of local folk both trad and contemporary (and acoustic or other roots based stuff) acts and provide decent length floor spots for up & coming local talent and acts from elsewhere who want to raise their profile in this part of the world. We will probably , from time to time, book "bigger names" as funds allow.

Please support live music in North Yorkshire and come along and support! If the club can get going it might offer you or your favourite act a paid performance opportunity in the future.

Programme for the first 3 months of KFFC is now almost complete:

24th November- Wendy Arrowsmith (surprise, surprise!) + Kim Guy + wait & see!!!!
15th December- Keepers Fold (THE Folk Duo!)+ Joolz Cavell+ Phil Graham
19th January- Richard Grainger + Les Cameron & Barbara Helen + Nick (six fingers) Brooker

*******Plans are also afoot for "The Winter Warmer" folk weekend in late Feb or early March. Keeping checking The Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club MySpace page for details.

It would be great if you indicate any interest in this idea, my thoughts are that this will be based around the pub, with "performance" in the large restaurant/ back room and participative (singaround & musician session) in the 2 bars. I have organised indoor camping facilities (with heating but no showers) in the Village Hall which is 150 yards (metres!) from the pub. There is a large car park for campers/ caravans/ vans and limited B & B at the pub. The landlord says that the very hardy can pitch tents in the pub garden!**********

Please let me know if you might be interested.

Paul

Mr Happy,

phew....I thought no one was interested, I should have the date for the Winter Warmer confirmed in the next few days and hopefully some of the acts. I am working towards Feb 14th/ 15th as long as this doesn't clash with Doncaster (anyone know when this is planned for next year?)

There will be indoor camping in the village Hall, min of 12-15 people to make this viable if people are prepared to pay £5 per night, not looking to make a profit on this so the more people (within reason)the cheaper it will be.

I need to talk to the landlord to see if he is going to want people to pay for camping on his lawn, personally I think he should be paying you if you want to camp in February!

Plenty of hard standing for campers/ caravans in the v. large pub car par and very limited B & B at £25 per person per night!

Good Real Ales, plenty of performance/ singaround/ session space....sounds like a good un to me!

If indoor camping there are loos and a kitchen in the Village Hall but no showers.

If outdoor camping (you brave people) you will be able to use the facilities (toilets) at the pub (not the kitchen obviously!). I will check on availability of outdoor water supply tonight.

Cheers

Paul

Paul,

I think Doncaster has moved into March, from what I could gather this evening from one of the organisers, it's probably the same weekend as Loughborough.

So February should be OK!.

Winter Warmer w/e is confirmed for 15th/16th/17th Feb with all the good stuff mentioned above.

( with "performance" in the large restaurant/ back room and participative (singaround & musician session) in the 2 bars. I have organised indoor camping facilities (with heating but no showers) in the Village Hall which is 150 yards (metres!) from the pub. There is a large car park for campers/ caravans/ vans and limited B & B at the pub. The landlord says that the very hardy can pitch tents in the pub garden! Pub facitities with be available to campers/ vanners overnight)

I am speaking to several acts with provisionally Wendy Arrowsmith, Brother Crow, Duncan McFarlane Band (in one guise or another!)and one or two others booked.

If there are any national "name" acts out there who would like to do us a favour and help get this w/e and club off the ground please pm me.

Tickets are likely to be around £15 for the w/e, £5 for Friday or Sunday and £8 for Saturday. No one will be taking profit out of the w/e but I will look to put a bit into KFFC coffers.

Cheers

Paul

Mr Happy,

There will be a wonderful mixture...."performance" in the big back room and singarounds/ seshes (simultaneously and before/ after the performances) in the front 2 bars, some of the "acts" have also agreed to lead the singarounds so we should be some good harmonies going.

There has to be some informal stuff or I would have nowhere to play my banjo.......no honestly I'm only joking...didn't mean to put anyone off.....come back...please!

Hope to see you there.

Paul

Don't know if Paul has started separate thread on this, but know he is looking to see if any Morris sides might want to come along for Winter Warmer in February and do a bit of dancing on the village green.

Any suggestions for vaguely locally-based sides in N Yorkshire locale?

A local Northeast dish, full bodied, robust and traditional:

Nick.....Official start time is 8.30pm...Kim should be on stage about 8.45, Wendy's first set should be about 9.20 followed by a beer break, Ian will be on about 10, Wendy's 2nd set will be as close to 10.30 as we can and she should be finished by about 11.15pm when we'll sing around until we stop...music licence is til 2.00am. I suspect that some people who are traveling some distance and staying over may arrive early...there is nothing to stop an impromptu sing around before the acts as well. We will need time for sound checks 6.45-7.15.

oombanjo, that's fantastic, we look forward to meeting you. The response looks very promising, I'm sure it will be an excellent night.

Opening Night!!!!!
Well, I think it worked! Last night was the 1st night of Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club....we were full! I'm not sure exactly how many were there but I counted 65 in the the main room at one time...which is about capacity when set up "club style" as opposed to "theatre style". It was certainly more than I dared hope for. I feel quite humbled by the fantastic turnout (not some thing I'm used to, feeling humble that is).

And the music was great both the informal stuff in the bar before and after the "main event" (what a talented singaround...Bill Lloyd, Carol, Joolz, John Oombanjo, Deirdre, Harvey, Zeke....the list goes on).

The acts were great by pretty much universal acclaim. Kim Guy got the thing underway what a singer and what a guitar player her arrangements of traditional songs were delightful, stand out for me was "The Blacksmith", we'll have her back, if she'll come all the way from Cornwall again.

What can I say about Ian McKone? I'm just glad that we caught him on the way up, he is destined for great things he sings with a proper blokes folk voice and his guitar playing is just stunning......one audience member described it as "like hearing 3 instruments at once" rhythmic, percussive and melodic at the same time...very, very clever. Traditional songs played with an intensity usually reserved for hard rock, we'll have him back too.....if we can afford him once the secret gets out!

And then the main guest, Wendy Arrowsmith...difficult for me to be objective (as I'm married to her) so I won't try! For me she has the voice of an angel and she either had the audience singing along, laughing or listening intently to her own songs, the traditional material she did and to her interpretation of other peoples songs...terrific entertainment. I felt humbled (jeez, twice in one night!!!) just to be part of "The Visitor" and to be allowed to warble along with Wendy and Kim when they sang (with everyone else in the room) "Time is a Tempest".

The whole vibe was mellow, friendly and well.....exciting. The death knell has been rung for folk clubs with abandon recently (including on this forum)....I just can't see it when this quality of entertainment is available and so many people are prepared to make the effort to come out and experience it.

Special mention has to go to the audience, we had people from as far afield as Cumbria, South & East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire .....and the Manchester contingent (who came specifically to see Wendy after catching her set at Ingleton Festival) who must have spent longer traveling than actually being at the club....as well as great support from the locals.

Thank you one & all, I had a great night and I hope you did too....you will be more than welcome at the next one (Keepers Fold, December 15th!!!)

Paul

Paul,

Thanks for your kind words but as I only did 2 of my "standard" set (the ones I can manage now wivout the words in front of me) I think that the real honours easily lie elsewhere.

It was a great evening, as someone said - it felt like a mini-festival!. Main honours go to Paul for actually organising and promoting the event in the first place!. Equally high in the rankings though are the 3 acts - Kim and Ian were new to me and are now on the "to see again" list. It must also be said that having three acts of "a singer and a guitar" COULD have been a bit samey - not a bit of it. All three were very individual in style and the informal partnerships worked a treat. Excellent sets from them all and rousing "joining in" from the audience.

What was also a great thing about the evening was the mix of audience. Yes, some of us had travelled considerable distances and many of us had never crossed paths before but found we had a connection in some way. I suspect we had all made the trip because we'd met Wendy and Paul somewhere along the line this year but it was nice to find other connections too - Oombanjo knowing lots of people from my home town through his old-timey music, Peregrina and I both having an interest in Lindisfarne and medieval history (not to mention Tom McConville and Pauline Cato!).

So, new club, new venue, new friends - a bit of Christmas shopping in Durham too - what a great weekend!.

I'll be back!

Deirdre

A great time, fanastic music, wonderful atmosphere. Thanks to all for everything and congratulations to KFFC for a first night that was as mellow and friendly as a festival, as nice as it could be.

And congratulations to Banjiman for organizing, even down to providing that good-burning dry wood for the fireside singarounds.

Kirkby Fleetham has almost no light pollution. Perfect to step outdoors into the real darkness of a starry sky after the singaround.

Oombanjo, Carol, BusyBeePaul, look forward to seeing you (and hearing you sing and play) again somewhere sometime!

Off visiting family on Saturday but will probably get there at some point in the evening as long as we get back at a reasonable hour.
Is it the same format as last time? Is it likely to continue as late?

Nick,

Yes, interesting post! It's those Russian club members again!

Format is the same....singaround before and after the acts. We will be trying hard to stick to time for the acts and really start the "late singaround" at 11.15-11.30. I would expect this to go on until the same sort of time as November (2.00ish...that's a.m. for those who weren't there).

Acts will start promptly at 8.30....we had useful feedback that our relaxed attitude to timings was the one slight irritation first time around.

Hopefully see you on Saturday.

Paul

KFFC Club Night number 2!

Well after the euphoria of the opening night we are starting to settle into a routine. We had a reasonable turnout last night (about 35) and we had a lot of fun.

Phil graham opened things up doing a mixture of traditional songs, contemporary and self penned numbers. His Rock 'n Roll roots showing through on a number of songs and he certainly got us in the mood.

Kathryn Davidson gave us a couple of traditional songs including "The Cow Medley" which included a sung slip jig, clever stuff. Her appearance was to raise money for her charity trip to Uganda to provide fire awareness training so we donated the proceeds of the raffle and a collection(about £77). I'm not sure how we pay for the acts in January but the work Kathryn is doing seemed more important frankly. If you would like to find out more please visit Kathryn's MySpace page .

Joolz Cavell did a fine set of self penned songs including the clever and very moving Baba which highlights child labour issues in the coco trade....brought home by the fact that the young lad who is the subject of this song has never tasted chocolate! Weird world we live in.

....and Keepers Fold. What can I say? They are simply one of the most entertaining acts on the folk scene; traditional and a sprinkling of contemporary songs sung and played with skill & gusto. You just have to join in, the harmonies from act and crowd during "Across The Hills of Home" were eye wateringly good. Can't think of a better Christmas Party act.

The already customary late night singaround was a fine blend of styles and included a number of singing virgins as well as all of the acts providing informal afters. A bit of banjo too not surprisingly. Finished early this month...1.40 am.

Number 3 on the 19th January will feature the all round talents of
Richard grainger, the gentle songs and harmonies of Les Cameron & Barbara Helen and the stunning guitar wizardry of Nick "six fingers" Brooker. Another superb night I'll wager!

Thanks to all who came and sang, played or watched.

Paul

Don't forget....January 19th.

Richard Grainger

Well known local(ish) singer and traditional sounding songwriter and fine guitarist. A good nights entertainment in anyone's book.

Les Cameron & Barbara Helen

Lovely songs and gentle harmonies. More great guitar playing.

Nick (six fingers) Brooker .

Nick is a local guitar god and a fine interpreter of traditional and contemporary songs.

Lot's of great gutar playing and singing then!

See you there?

Paul

KFFC Club night number 3!

Another thoroughly enjoyable evening at KFFC. The evening started with a singaround in the pub foyer (with couches- very comfortable!) as the bar had been taken over by a shooting party.........still Joolz did an excellent job of getting this going.

First act up tonight was Nick Brooker, fully justifying his local nickname of "six fingers" ...he really is a phenomenal guitarists and coupled with his sweet singing a great act deserving of more exposure.......if you run a club book him!

We then had the first set from the main guest for the evening, Richard Grainger. Though I have spent time doing "stuff" with Richard and have heard him doing quite a few songs I hadn't experienced his full act until last night. As well as his fine, self penned (but traditional styled) songs he has a wealth of anecdotes and stories from growing up on Teeside, family roots on The North York Moors and a long folk singing career. He struck a real chord with the audience.

Richard is also consummate professional, even when Wendy took a full length tumble (tripping over a speaker stand- I must sort out Public Liability Insurance!) in her eagerness to take money off late arriving audience members (that's why I love her!) he calmly kept playing.

Next up we had Les Cameron & Barbara Helen, vising from Saltbun. They also played a memorable set. They have both written some excellent songs, harmonise well and some lovely, mellow guitar playing. I have to confess that "Loving In The End" (you can hear it on their MySpace page) is one of my current favourite songs so I'm thrilled that they granted my request to play it. Lovely!.....again, if you run a club......you know what to do and if you get the chance to see them, take it.

Richard then closed the "formal" part of the evening, conjuring up more images of Teeside's industrial past, drunken clergymen and Moorland ghosts. He paints some vivid pictures.

The closing singaround was a small but very select group (probably people had noticed that I had the banjo with me!) but we still sung the night away with some new songs from Wendy, Joolz's ever increasing self-penned stock, Harvey delivering some of his classics, Norman playing a different guitar (I wonder just how many guitars and banjos that man has!) and further excellence form Nick, Les and Barbara. I played a bit of banjo.........the surroundings got hazier and Phil called time at some point....can't quite remember when.........

Thanks to Glynn for his MCing....thanks to the audience for coming and listening, singing and applauding.

You'll all be relieved to know that my banjo is fine after taking it's tumble (don't you hate it when you forget to close your case properly)....and WILL be in evidence at the Winter Warmer (see separate thread) in 4 weeks time.............you can look forward to that!

Cheers

Paul

Hello Banjiman.

Damn

Just read the advice on starting a Folk Club and seen the link to your Folk Club in Kirkby Fleetham. I have been holidaying in that area a number of times over the years and when I have asked at various Tourist Information Offices about Clubs have been told the only Folk Club around was in Skipton.

I shall note your club for when I am next in the area on holiday which will be end November/beginning December (at the moment)and if I can get there I will.

Be great to meet you if you can make it.

Hi Paul,

I think the same is true of most of the Tourist Information Centres around England. I was on Holiday in Cornwall (Tintagel area) mid-June
and when I rang the Tourist Information to ask what Folk Music Clubs where in the area the ladt answered with 'What is Folk Music.'

Is there a need for all Folk Club organisers to let their Local Tourist Information Centres have information/ leaflets on their clubs then anyone from out of the area can obtain this.

I have only recently come across the Mudcat site and can only access it on breaks at work.
