Subject: Seamus Kennedy's new CD
From: Big Jim from Jackson
Date: 15 Feb 06 - 05:23 PM

Seamus' new CD is titled "Party Pieces" and consists of songs from various friends and relatives that were/are performed at informal gatherings in pubs and living rooms. It really is a superb album with a novel concept. I will be playing 7 or 8 cuts from it on my radio show broadcast on March 11th. We stream on line, so anyone can listen by going to www.krcu.org and clicking on the Listen Now link. You may have to log in and get downloaded into the web carrier first. The show is called "Your Folk Connection" and is broadcast each Saturday at 7:00 pm CST. It's a great CD with songs ranging from sad to silly with stops in between. "Spirited" might be a good adjective.

This is probably my favorite CD of my buddy Seamus' yet. I get the impression that Seamus did this one for himself. Every song comes with an explanation as to who sung these songs in his life. The whole CD reminds me of my family. Between the liner notes and the song selection, I am constantly pulled back to a what an Irish/Irish American gathering of friends and family is like. Irish songs, to be sure, but any song that someone really enjoyed. It isn't the song so much as it is the singing with family and friends.

I love this CD.

Mick

Good review, Big Mick. I completely agree. And while these songs have different sources, it doesn't hurt a thing that they are all sung by Seamus now that he's outgrown his "puppy voice" (inside joke).

Thanks, guys! The puppy voice that Jim is referring to is the pre-baritone I used to sing in many years ago on a recording of my REALLY early shit that I sent him (circa 1976 or so) befofre my scrotum had fully descended.

When Seamus sings, it's just so GOOD for you-- but it isn't at all like medicine!

On this CD more than the others I have the pleasure of enjoying, I can appreciate the range of vocal talent and skills needed to span this set of songs. Each of them present their own technical difficulties... taken as a group, it's far more than any one person ought, logically, to be able to manage. Yet there he goes, skating over the top of the challenges they offer, and phrasing everything for complete clarity and beautiful expression.

After years of touring and entertaining folks, Seamus' voice has only gained in rich experience, whereas most voices would long since have dried into gritty dust under a schedule like his, and blown away with the wind. When Seamus sings, if I even try to sing along I get a vocalist's workshop worth more than all the voice lessons I ever paid for.

My favorite on the CD is Carrickfergus. It all sounds perfectly REAL when Seamus casts himself in its starring role-- except that I'm pretty sure that even on the worst day on the road, Seamus would be having considerably more fun. :~)

He has accused me of gushing when I write about his music (shut UP dear man) (sit on him, would you please, Mick!), but the simple truth is that there is no one who can move me, or make me laugh, or make me think-- or make me glad to be a Mudcatter-- like our Seamus when he sings.

~Susan

PS, Seamus, if you don't want me to gush, better send me the puppy-voice stuff. Forthwith. In fact, please send it anyway! :~)

Ard - thanks, oul' hand. Up the Galls!
Susan you ARE gushing - now I'll have to buy your silence!
Mmario - don't even think about gushing.

I just got back from recording the March 11th radio show. The second half-hour is all Seamus---about 7 songs. On the show for the 4th of March I played a lot of southwestern English songs---Shag Connors and the Carrot Crunchers, the Wurzels, and the Yokels. It is in the first half hour. Really fun stuff. You are all invited to listen in. See the opening post on this thread for the web site URL.
Seamus, I'll try to get you a copy so you can hear what the show sounds like.             Jim

Yep, "Party Pieces" is fun stuff. Seamus' selections are great, his backup musicians are superb, and quality of the overall CD is fantastic. I even like the packaging, but was hoping for a few more pics of his smiling mug. The dear lad abandoned all his friends in Alaska this year to go partying in the Carribean and we missed him terribly. My lovely wife tells me that I sing the Clydesdale song better than Seamus, but she might just be trying not to hurt my delicate feelings. (Does this count as gushing?)

Mike

Seamus' new CD is very good indeed, and I'm not just saying that because I'm biased towards Norn Iron people!

Seamus, I'm usually pretty quick-witted. But I have no words for a rebuttal to that one.

Damn I am glad for the refresh 'cause I missed this before!

Seamus always makes me feel good and all of his stuff has a genuine and personal feel. The best of his albums for me are the ones where I feel I am right there with him and "Party Pieces" is now at the top of that list. The songs and the musicality are fine of course but the delivery is everything and this one is just great!

If there is anyone reading this who hasn't heard Seamus before, I suggest that THIS is the CD to buy. I mean the rest of them are all mighty fine, but this one will definitely make you a fan.

Well, I got my copy today...$17.22 (including postage) from CD Baby. Definitely worthwhile, but I do think that Alaska Mike does his Clydesdale song better than Seamus does. Hey, Seamus...do some of these things when you make your annual trip to Albuquerque!

GUEST, I sing Farewell to N.S/ on stage sometimes, and I think I just might stick it on my next CD, thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for the kind words, folks.
And Alaska Mike sings Clydesdale way better than I do....he wrote the darn thing after all!
And he features it prominently on his CD "Mars Outback".
Why not get both CDs and compare!
Artbrooks, just PM me with your requests before I come out to Albuquerque for my show at the Zoo on July 28th, and I'll do 'em for you.

Seamus

Ha-ha. Good one, Art!
When I'm raking in the millions, I'll put on a concert, kinda like Live Aid with all the musical Mudcatters performing a spot or two, and we'll give the proceeds to Max.
