Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: Dave the Gnome Date: 25 Feb 04 - 09:16 AM Just had a flashback to childhood as well Pancake Tuesday's a very happy day If you don't give us a holiday we'll all run away Where will you run to? Down Folly Lane. I'll tell the teacher and you'll get the cane! Folly Lane is a road that runs between Swinton and Eccles. It was once a very important highway when it was used by all the people in the Swinton area to get to Church in Eccles. that makes this localised but is anyone aware of any other localisations or chants of a sililar nature? Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: Morticia Date: 25 Feb 04 - 09:49 AM another one I remember is: Shrove Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday Jack's father to plough He tried to make pancakes But he didn't know how He burned them and spoiled them And made them so black He stuck them on the table And he said "Jack, eat that!" I think there was more, but it was a long time ago and I find I am increasingly suffering from degenerative recollection impairment, otherwise known as aging. |
Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: Dave the Gnome Date: 25 Feb 04 - 10:01 AM Yep - Pancake Tuesday is our equivalent of Mardi Gras. Except that in Mardi Gras you get weeks of celebrating, music, drink and food. We get to eat greasy fried batter with sugar and lemon juice;-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Feb 04 - 03:48 PM "When is it on the Orthodox calender? I can catch up then" Not this year you can't - dates for Lent (which starts on Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day/Mardi Gras) and Easter happen to coincide this year between the Western and the Eastern Churches. That's quite unusual. Here is a calendar of these feasts for the next few years. |

Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: LadyJean Date: 26 Feb 04 - 11:29 PM If you want pancakes, go to Pamela's in Pittsburgh. There's three of them, one on Walnut Street in Shadyside, one on Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill, and one on Forbes Avenue in Oakland. They've got the best pancakes anywhere. I believe they will serve them with strawberries and whipped cream. But I prefer the traditional maple syrup. (Lemon juice?) |

Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: Azizi Date: 18 May 08 - 12:09 PM I just read this post about Pancake Tuesday on another Mudcat thread: thread.cfm?threadid=4300 Subject: RE: Children's Street Songs From: GUEST,Chris McCann - PM Date: 31 Mar 08 - 11:13 PM One I remember from my childhood in Belfast in the 50s was: Pancake Tuesday is a holiday. If we don't get off, we'll all run away. Where shall we run? Down the wee lane. Who should we meet, but the teacher with the cane. What shall we do? We'll chop her up in two & leave her at the hospital at half past two! (? not totally clear in the memory department on the last half of the last line!) -snip- Since I had never heard of Pancake Tuesday before, I looked up information about it on Google, and found this interesting wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday Here's a couple of excerpts from that page: "The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that the 40 days of Lent form a period of liturgical fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs may be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar are disposed of immediately prior to the commencement of the fast. Pancakes and doughnuts were therefore an efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a minor celebratory feast prior to the fast itself." -snip- Pancake Races: ..."The most famous pancake race, at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line tossing the pancakes as they go. As the pancakes are thin, some skill is required to toss them successfully while running. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney was so busy making pancakes, that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake." ** My thanks to GUEST,Chris McCann for writing the post that led to my learning something about Pancake Day. But I actually prefer waffles to pancakes. Is Waffle Day celebrated anywhere? :o) |
Subject: RE: BS: Damn! I missed my pancakes:-( From: open mike Date: 18 May 08 - 01:28 PM once again i must interject with Swedish tradition.. Pancakes exist as a vehicle for Lingonberries |
