Subject: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 12 Jan 12 - 03:39 PM Portland FolkMusic Society's annual weekend music camp will be held March 31 - April 1 this year, at Camp Adams, near Portland, Oregon. The Singtime Frolics 2012 page on the PFS website has a lot more information about the camp. It contains a link for registering and paying online and another for downloading a mail-in form to print. If you're a Facebook member, you can also find photos, videos, and more about Singtime here: Singtime Frolics Facebook Page It's a wonderful weekend - a lot like the FSGW Getaway but one day shorter (and it costs less). Most of the participants usually come from Oregon and Washington, but we encourage wandering minstrels from parts near and far to join us if you can. And we're happy to say that some do come from as far away as the east coast from time to time. Check it out! |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 13 Jan 12 - 12:53 PM The special guest artists for this year's Singtime Frolics will be William Pint & Felicia Dale, extraordinary collectors and interpreters of maritime music from many parts of the world. Pint & Dale website |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 16 Jan 12 - 04:34 PM Several people besides Pint and Dale have proposed workshops for the camp. So far, these include: "Just Du-et" - led by Clare Favro and Hank Payne Chantey Sing - led by Jonathan Lay and Gordy Euler and a Songwriting workshop - led by a NW songwriter whom I don't know and whose name escapes me at the moment If you're interested in presenting a workshop, please send a PM to me or to David Ingerson or go to the PFS website for more contact info. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 18 Jan 12 - 12:48 AM Even if your geographical location prevents you from joining us this year, please pass the word to anyone you know in the Pacific NW or who may be visiting this region in late March. It's really worth coming, and we always like to meet new folkie friends. |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) 3/30 to 4/1/12 From: Genie Date: 21 Jan 12 - 04:00 PM Here's another video from Singtime Frolics 2010. It's Leo and Bev doing Tom Paxton's "How Beautiful Upon The Mountain" in the Sat. evening concert. The concert is just one of a whole lot of musical activities at Singtime (as at any participatory music camp), but it's easier to make or find videos from the concert than from group sessions and workshops. Videotaping song circles or other groups is logistically difficult, plus getting permissions for sharing the videos is much more problematic. So I'll probably post mainly links to concert videos. Joe's going to be with us again this year at Singtime. |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 28 Jan 12 - 03:50 PM Still almost a month to go to get the $15 discount for early registration. And we're still looking for more workshop offerings. |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: mg Date: 03 Feb 12 - 01:52 AM Save me a place..I will register on the 10th or thereabouts. Will have to catch a ride from Portland. or Astoria even if anyone comes from there. mg |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 04 Feb 12 - 05:11 PM Let me know when you think you'll be arriving in Portland. If our schedules fit, you can ride with me. But the registration form has a place to indicate if you either can offer a ride or need a ride. The ride-offerers and ride-seekers will be put in touch with each other to work out logistics. If you could get to Longview, you might be able to catch a ride with one of the PFS folks who live there or with someone driving down from Seattle or Olympia, etc. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: mg Date: 04 Feb 12 - 05:42 PM I can easily get to Kelso which is right over the river and on the way to the freeway..no..actually I could get to Longview too to a couple of places..not before about 1 p.m. though. Little shuttle bus. I have determined I should not drive at night in the rain..so I will be taking buses etc. would have to take bus back from Portland to Astoria though. mg |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (near Portland, Oregon) From: Genie Date: 06 Feb 12 - 02:12 PM If you get in touch with people in Longview/Kelso or Portland whom you could carpool with, there might be several possibilities for getting you back to Astoria by car without your having to drive at night in the rain. (Besides, it never rains in the Pacific NW on April 1, so you'd pretty much be assured of clear, dry weather.) |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: mg Date: 07 Feb 12 - 01:36 PM I never go to these to hear the featured players, who are at some camps...the regular people are great enough..but if you have not heard Will and Felicia...you are missing a huge opportunity. I have known Will since from way back when, but not Felicia, except for seeing her in performances mostly, but it will be a great experience being able to sing with them..great maritime stuff..plus we hope that Mary B. who is recovering from a stroke that damaged her speaking ability but left her beautiful voice will be there..what a great reunion...mg |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 08 Feb 12 - 05:41 AM I'm thrilled to report that the wonderful Mary Benson has got a good deal of her awesome voice back and does sing along on many songs. The residues of her strokes render her having to use "cheat sheets" to prompt recollection of song lyrics, but the voice is still beautiful. I have no doubt that Mary will be participating enthusiastically in William and Felicia's workshops as well as the shanty sing. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 08 Feb 12 - 06:58 PM We still have scholarships available, but to apply for a full or partial scholarship you need to apply by Feb. 27, by mail. (Online registration requires full payment of the camp registration fee by credit card or Pay Pal account, which would be $75 up thru 2-27-12 or $90 between 2/27 and 3/19.) So if you can come but cost is a factor, send in your registration by 2/27 w/or payment and request a scholarship. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 10 Feb 12 - 02:45 AM We're getting a number of workshops firmed up, including: "Just Du-et" - led by Hank Payne and Clare Favro of Seattle "Occupy Singtime" - led by Flip Breskin, IIRC |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: mg Date: 10 Feb 12 - 02:53 AM I told them I would do a workshop on Northwest Women I think...mg |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 12 Feb 12 - 12:56 AM We're looking forward to that, Mary. It seems we may have 3 different maritime-themed workshops in addition to Pint and Dale's: Yours (though I'm not sure how much yours is maritime-oriented), Dick Thies's on songs about wooden boats, and Gordy and Jonathan's shanty sing. We'll try to schedule these so they're not opposite each other or Pint & Dale's, if possible. Genie |

Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: mg Date: 14 Feb 12 - 01:14 AM Of course he is a handsome young man and many of these fans at the camps are nearing retirement age..could be a factor..just saying..but count me as a fan...mg |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 14 Feb 12 - 05:16 AM The idea is to get more of the kids and grandkids to come, so they won't be the one or two teens or young adults amongst the geezers. We do have a number of younger (under 30) musicians who come to Singtime, so it's a matter of getting them there the same year. Besides, Raffi plays well with others of all ages. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 15 Feb 12 - 11:53 AM Other workshops proposed by one of our presenters: Songs And Stories Of The Old West All in the family - family relationships, dysfunctional & otherwise Saints and Sinners, Heroes and Villains in song and story. Funny, Witty or Clever Songs |

Subject: PFS Singtime Frolics 2012 (Camp Adams, Oregon) From: Genie Date: 25 Feb 12 - 06:47 PM Heads up! Monday, Feb. 27 is the last day for "early registration" for Singtime Frolics. Early registration -- which can be done online -- gets you a $15 discount on the camp fee. Also, if you would like a full or partial scholarship, you must register and request that by this coming Monday and register by mail (postmarked by 2-27-12). Online registration, in addition to registration by mail, will continue until March 19, but the cost per adult after 2-27 is $90 (still a bargain for 4 full meals, 2 nights' lodging, and more music and fun and camaraderie than a body has a right to). Singtime Frolics registration information |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 27 Feb 12 - 11:48 PM Not the last chance to register for Singtime 2012 -- you have till March 19 to sign up if you can come -- but if you'd like a $15 discount you need to register today. You can register online here . Or, if you want to ask for any scholarship price reduction, you need to register by mail and get the letter postmarked tonight. (That's still doable, at least in Portland.) Anyway, things are shaping up well and it looks like it's going to be a great music weekend! |
Subject: PFS Singtime Frolics 2012 (Camp Adams, Oregon) From: Genie Date: 01 Mar 12 - 07:44 PM Here are this year's guest artists, Pint & Dale performing a song they learned in England (Hull?) from the songwriter, Linda Kelly. Would that be our own Mudcatter Linda Kelly, who teams up with Hazel Richings (Pistachio) as "Hissyfit?" |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 02 Mar 12 - 02:37 PM Other workshops are being added as we get closer to Singtime. These include: A SPANISH SONGS workshop (if there's interest, which there has been in the past) SONGS & STORIES OF THE WEST, OLD & NEW - led by Robert Rodriquez (instead of Saints and Sinners, Heroes and Villains - though the content may overlap some). This can be trad. songs from the 19th or early 20th C., songs from the Carter Family; Jimmie Rodgers; Woody Guthrie, etc.; songs from the "golden era of western movies" (e.g., Sons Of The Pioneers); cowboy/western songs by more contemporary artists; etc. PARTNER SONGS, CANTICLES & COUNTERPOINTS - E.G., songs written as "duets" with totally separate superimposed melodies; rounds like Dona Nobis Pacem (where the tune & timing change from part to part); songs that have canticles; totally separate songs that can be superimposed on because they have the same chord pattern & structure; songs where the SATB parts involve counterpoint or the like |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 03 Mar 12 - 07:28 PM Mo Mack is also going to offer his "Jam It Up!" workshop, where the participants work up a song or two as a sort of jam band and then perform one of them at the Saturday night concert. |
Subject: RE: Singtime Frolics 2012 (Pac. NW) From: Genie Date: 06 Mar 12 - 07:38 PM And I believe Dave Rabinowitz is also going to lead a harmony workshop. |

This is not a workshop on harmony theory. (I) Songs & Stories of the West, Old & New. All about the West - 19th-century folk songs, cowboy-movie songs, classic c/w or new west-themed songs. Robert Rodriquez brings a couple of songs and stories and you share yours. (C) Harmony.
