Portland FolkMusic Society's annual weekend music camp will be held March 31 - April 1 this year, at Camp Adams, near Portland, Oregon.


The Singtime Frolics 2012 page on the PFS website has a lot more information about the camp.
It contains a link for registering and paying online and another for downloading a mail-in form to print.

It's a wonderful weekend - a lot like the FSGW Getaway but one day shorter (and it costs less).
Most of the participants usually come from Oregon and Washington, but we encourage wandering minstrels from parts near and far to join us if you can. And we're happy to say that some do come from as far away as the east coast from time to time.

Here's another video from Singtime Frolics 2010.   It's Leo and Bev doing Tom Paxton's "How Beautiful Upon The Mountain" in the Sat. evening concert.

The concert is just one of a whole lot of musical activities at Singtime (as at any participatory music camp), but it's easier to make or find videos from the concert than from group sessions and workshops.   Videotaping song circles or other groups is logistically difficult, plus getting permissions for sharing the videos is much more problematic.   

So I'll probably post mainly links to concert videos.

But the registration form has a place to indicate if you either can offer a ride or need a ride.   The ride-offerers and ride-seekers will be put in touch with each other to work out logistics.

If you could get to Longview, you might be able to catch a ride with one of the PFS folks who live there or with someone driving down from Seattle or Olympia, etc.

I can easily get to Kelso which is right over the river and on the way to the freeway..no..actually I could get to Longview too to a couple of places..not before about 1 p.m. though. Little shuttle bus. I have determined I should not drive at night in the rain..so I will be taking buses etc. would have to take bus back from Portland to Astoria though. mg

If you get in touch with people in Longview/Kelso or Portland whom you could carpool with, there might be several possibilities for getting you back to Astoria by car without your having to drive at night in the rain. (Besides, it never rains in the Pacific NW on April 1, so you'd pretty much be assured of clear, dry weather.)

I never go to these to hear the featured players, who are at some camps...the regular people are great enough..but if you have not heard Will and Felicia...you are missing a huge opportunity. I have known Will since from way back when, but not Felicia, except for seeing her in performances mostly, but it will be a great experience being able to sing with them..great maritime stuff..plus we hope that Mary B. who is recovering from a stroke that damaged her speaking ability but left her beautiful voice will be there..what a great reunion...mg

I'm thrilled to report that the wonderful Mary Benson has got a good deal of her awesome voice back and does sing along on many songs. The residues of her strokes render her having to use "cheat sheets" to prompt recollection of song lyrics, but the voice is still beautiful.   I have no doubt that Mary will be participating enthusiastically in William and Felicia's workshops as well as the shanty sing.

We still have scholarships available, but to apply for a full or partial scholarship you need to apply by Feb. 27, by mail.   

(Online registration requires full payment of the camp registration fee by credit card or Pay Pal account, which would be $75 up thru 2-27-12 or $90 between 2/27 and 3/19.)

So if you can come but cost is a factor, send in your registration by 2/27 w/or payment and request a scholarship.

The idea is to get more of the kids and grandkids to come, so they won't be the one or two teens or young adults amongst the geezers. We do have a number of younger (under 30) musicians who come to Singtime, so it's a matter of getting them there the same year.
Besides, Raffi plays well with others of all ages.

Heads up!

Monday, Feb. 27 is the last day for "early registration" for Singtime Frolics. Early registration -- which can be done online -- gets you a $15 discount on the camp fee.

Also, if you would like a full or partial scholarship, you must register and request that by this coming Monday and register by mail (postmarked by 2-27-12).   

Online registration, in addition to registration by mail, will continue until March 19, but the cost per adult after 2-27 is $90 (still a bargain for 4 full meals, 2 nights' lodging, and more music and fun and camaraderie than a body has a right to).

A SPANISH SONGS workshop (if there's interest, which there has been in the past)

SONGS & STORIES OF THE WEST, OLD & NEW - led by Robert Rodriquez (instead of Saints and Sinners, Heroes and Villains - though the content may overlap some).    This can be trad. songs from the 19th or early 20th C., songs from the Carter Family; Jimmie Rodgers; Woody Guthrie, etc.; songs from the "golden era of western movies" (e.g., Sons Of The Pioneers); cowboy/western songs by more contemporary artists; etc.

PARTNER SONGS, CANTICLES & COUNTERPOINTS - E.G., songs written as "duets" with totally separate superimposed melodies; rounds like Dona Nobis Pacem (where the tune & timing change from part to part); songs that have canticles; totally separate songs that can be superimposed on because they have the same chord pattern & structure; songs where the SATB parts involve counterpoint or the like

TENTATIVE SINGTIME FROLICS 2012 WORKSHOP LIST - 3-16-12

Occupy Singtime! - Fl!p Breskin. Singing together enhances the solidarity important to social change movements. Songs have
       helped us work for peace, civil rights, labor rights, etc. Share songs that give you courage, hope, comfort, speak truth to power. (C)

Rounds - Mary Ann Gilpatrick. Bring rounds to lead or teach, especially your lesser-known favorites. (C, S)

Songs to Honor Wooden Boats. Rowboats to tall ships celebrated in song. Dick Thies will have background information
         and song sheets for some of these. (T, C)

Setting the Sail/Setting the Song. Guest artists Pint & Dale demonstrate and talk about arranging traditional maritime
         songs for the 21st century. With guitar, whistle, fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, octave mandolin, and tight vocal harmonies they
         create distinctive renditions. Try out different vocal and instrumental techniques on songs you suggest and learn how to
         get the most out of your songs. (L, I, P)

Chorus Songs. Pint & Dale will provide lyric sheets and teach choruses — ranging from simple refrains to more complex,
         challenging choruses — for some traditional and contemporary songs, familiar and not-so familiar. (I,S)

Shanty Sing - Gordy Euler & Jonathan Lay. Shanghaied on the Willamette leading favorites. (S)

Robert Burns. Focusing on Robbie Burns poems that have been set to music, Alan Bonney will bring copies of some key poems/
         songs. Bring your own favorites and instruments if you wish. (T,C)

Jam it Up!   Jam with Mo Mack on a few songs, then the "band" picks one to work up as an ensemble performance for the concert.
         No performing experience needed. All skill levels welcome. (I, J)

Songwriting. Betsy Wellings shares & pointers from her own prolific songwriting experience & can share your own or a friend's
          original song, complete or in-progress, and receive feedback from the group. (I,C)

Just Du-et! Hank Payne & Claire Favro share tips for arranging duets and avoiding common pitfalls. Learn both parts of a
         mountain-style song and try out your own duet singing. This is not a workshop on harmony theory. (I)

Songs & Stories of the West, Old & New. All about the West - 19th-century folk songs, cowboy-movie songs, classic c/w
         or new west-themed songs. Robert Rodriquez brings a couple of songs and stories and you share yours. (C)

Harmony. Dave Rabinowitz reviews some harmony theory and shows you how to find harmonies no matter what your vocal range.
         Bring a song if you'd like to develop a harmony for it. (I)

Songs by and about Women in the Northwest. Mary Garvey will share some of her own songs as well as songs by
         Meryle Korn, Susy McAleer, Linda Allen and others, and you may have some to share as well. (T, C)

All in the Family - Robert Rodriguez. Share songs of family and relationships, dysfunctional and otherwise. (C)

April Fool!   April 1 is a great time to share musical jokes, songs with surprise endings, parodies and other kinds of foolery.
          Folklorist and singer/songwriter Joe Hickerson will keep the circle moving. (C)

Gospel Sing   Sharing gospel and spiritual songs. Let's hear some awesome harmonizing!   (C, S)

OPEN SONG CIRCLES and JAMS:
-Friday evening All-camp Song Circle- In turn, perform a song, lead one or pass.
-Late Night Song Circle - Friday and Saturday nights (same format)
-Jam Sessions - Late night jams Friday and Saturday nights, daytime jams Saturday AM & PM and Sunday AM.



SHORT DESCRIPTIONS OF COMMON WORKSHOP TYPES

Song circle. Take turns sharing (performing or leading) songs. Facilitator usually starts things off, then exerts   
       minimal control.

(S) Sing-along. Group singing workshop (with or without instrumental backup).

(T) Taught song circle or sing-along. Presenter selects and/or teaches many or most of the songs, often with printed song sheets.                                                                                                                                                         

(I) Instructional. Demonstration & practice of vocal or instrumental technique, dance, songwriting, etc., with some
      'hands-on' practice by participants.

(J) Jam session. Instrumental or instrumental with vocal. Unstructured, except tunes/songs chosen with an eye to
       the group playing/singing along.

(L/D) Lecture/demonstration. Lecture, forum, discussion, and/or demonstration but without active group participation in
       singing, dancing, or playing instruments.

(P) Performance. A mini-concert given by the presenter(s).
