I am very sad to relay to Mudcatters that one of Australia's favourite "world music" and folk performers, the Russian-born singer and musician Zulya Kamalova, died 4 days ago from the cancer from which she had been suffering from for some time. She was just 55. She came to Australia in 1991 and lived here ever since, but toured in Europe as well, more recently with her band "The Children of the Underground".

Zulya resided initially in Hobart for some 9-10 years before relocating to Melbourne, where she remained and was most recently the Director of Music for the acclaimed "Boite" world music venue there. More information at https://www.pbsfm.org.au/news/vale-zulya-kamalova and other places including SBS radio/television in Australia. RIP Zulya, a shining performer who brought joy wherever she appeared.

To honour her memory I have just created some stills from a 1999 video that I have and uploaded them here, along with another couple from a 1995 festival (the first image is someone else's, not mine):

While the image quality suffers a little from not being taken via the usual means, I do think they convey a lot of Zulya's character which endeared her to many.

I remember seeing Zulya and The Children of the Underground at the NFF in Canberra, many moons ago.

Vale, Zulya.
