The short answer to that, Nick, is yes and no. Confusingly (again) the Greek Dorian mode is the same as the mediaeval and modern Phrygian mode.

The mode is based on the Dorian tetrachord: descending, a series of falling intervals of two whole tones followed by a semitone. Applied to a whole octave, the Dorian mode was built upon two Dorian tetrachords separated by a whole tone, thus . . . [what I said before . . .]

Dick, you're giving me a headache and I haven't got anything here to play on. But C#F# is Phrygian (strictly speaking).

Try this a for a useful all purpose E chord - 079900 - which is a version of the chord Dick described - or 022400.

Sounds to me like the squeezer group won't divulge the tune names 'cos they might be 'precious' types who don't really want 'not very good guitar player' strumming along - perhaps they think s/he'll get fed up & go elsewhere.

Captain Birdseye

My experience, your experience. It probably depends where you live. Looking through the Lewes Favourites Tune Book, all the E "minor" tunes are aeolian (which isn't the same as Eminor) except one, The Rights of Man, which is Irish but we've appropriated it because Tom Paine used to live here.

It may well be different again in Hull.

The next time I play with any Greek balalaika player who is over 1000 years old and we are playing dorian tunes I'll make sure we agree on whose mode we choose otherwise it might sound horrible.

In the meantime I think I'll stick to the chord set I'd go with from the modern definition that most of the people I play with would understand and expect me to play :) Thanks for the tip though it could be invaluable.

Perhaps we might be in danger of slightly over-complicating this thread rather than getting back to slightly more basic questions like 'What tune is that called?'

Until we know whether GUEST,not very good guitar player is playing in Em or Eb and what tunes they are playing, we can't really do much so we may as well chat among ourselves.
