"All by itself that is a huge step. Do not undervalue it."

Hard to undervalue something I believe has no value, isn't it?

By definition, "sham elections" are worthless. This was a worthless election, but worse because it made Americans think this was actually a positive thing for Iraqis. It isn't. Nothing will change in Iraq until the US occupation forces are gone, gone, gone, no matter how many elections are held in Iraq.

Why? Because the Iraqi "government" being elected has no power. The Americans have all the power. Any and every single member of the so-called government will do what they are told, and nothing more. There is no autonomy whatsoever.

Which is why this election is a sham. The US was calling the shots today, just like they were on Friday. That won't change, no matter how many puppet governments get voted in and out in this game.

You election cheerleaders keep forgetting about that too, doncha? You think because people actually showed up to vote when told to do so, that it Means Something. It doesn't.

GI Joe is still in charge in Iraq, and will be for a long time to come. NOT the Iraqi government. Capiche?

Charlie, the Iraqis aren't required by law to vote, as has been in the case in sham elections staged by the US in some other places, like El Salvador. But they have been coerced into participating in this election, the timing and framework of which was imposed by the Anglo American occupation authorities.

However, let me repeat here what I just posted in the "Election in Iraq" thread:

The main reasons why Iraqis would vote out of fear, is because everyone who voted had their hands marked with an indelible ink that won't wash off for a couple days.

So imagine you live in Sadr City in Baghdad. You have business in the City Centre today, and so leave Sadr City to go towards the Green Zone to take care of your business. You did not vote, because of threats and intimidation from the insurgents in your neighborhood, despite the fatwa from al Sistani.

You of course are stopped by US occupation forces on your way to the City Centre, to have your papers checked, etc. The soldier sees you don't have the election mark on your hands, asks you to step over to the side. Upon examination of your papers, he sees you are from Sadr City. He is immediately suspicious of you because your address is in Sadr City, and because you obviously haven't voted. The soldier immediately suspects you are associated with the insurgency, and has you arrested on the spot.

You are taken to a jail on the outskirts of the city, but no one in your family knows this.

Does that help any of you understand why this might matter to an Iraqi?

Bobert: Anyone who believes these elections are the real deal probably is a TV wrestling fan and believes in the tooth fairy as well...

Being a pro wrestling fan is not the same as believing that pro wrestling is actually a competitive sport.

Pro wrestling tells stories, as does opera and ballet. Yup, that's right! Ballet is fixed!

But back to what drew me to this thread: Given the place it's being posted, wouldn't a better thread name have been "Chimes of Freedom Flashing"?

Bobert,
why do you insist on being so hateful! damn bud the Iraqi's are risking life and limb for a shot at the democratic process, for a chance to have a voice in what is going to happen in their country, you are so convinced that what you believe is right, you've given yourself over to fanaticisim! 40 plus iraqi citizens lost their life to fanatics Sunday, and you know what they did, they set the tables back up and got back in line,.. that is bravery, that is belief that things can get better, that is standing up to those cowardly bastards
and telling them their pitiful attempt to stop freedom isn't going to work anymore. I salute them, I'm for them, I'm damned proud of them,I believe the cause is just.
Peace! Through Understanding
~Biskit~

They are starting to be heard in North Korea, where someone told me yesterday, and I can not confirm it, that they were paving roads with the bodies of Christians, or dissidents, or perhaps they were one and the same. I said do you mean literally, and he said yes. We do need their cabbages for biofuel, so we must make haste. mg
