G-Force: I think the 'brown-ness' is a class thing rather; from the time that only the lower classes were suntanned as they had to work in the open, so he rejects her as being socially beneath him. What I love about that ballad is the way that, when he changes his mind & tells her he will die for love if she doesn't return to him after all, she replies that when he does her mourning will take the form of dancing on his grave. LoL & Goody for her!
