I have a shameful confession.....

Last year's hockey addiction has continued, apace, instead of reducing with familiarity. We've begun routinely taping online radio broadcasts of..... a UHL Team [sob] that's an hour away. We get there when we can when there's no Pens game on TV that night..... but I've got two or three UHL games in the can I am actually saving for a Sunday afternoon or two, or worse-- post-playoff (NHL) season!

Why the lowly UHL? Because it's nearby enough that we have been there and will go there again... because we can picture the rink and the players better than trying to follow Blackhawks on radio who we've never seen, in a rink we've never seen.

With the UHL team-- we've met the mascot, we've seen the players' styles and facial expressions, we can hear our known seat-mates from the section where we always sit, yelling and honking that horn they honk. (ah-OO-gah!)

When we go to those games, the tix are cheap enough we can sit right along the glass, and watch the play from ice-level. And they have an exceptionally good play-by-play guy streaming on the radio, home and away games.

But still, I know it's wrong.

I don't know about the UHL, but we just lost our San Diego Gulls of the WHL, and it is a shame. Lots of excitement for all the reasons you describe, and interesting, too, to compare the action to an NHL game - passes a little less accurate, a little shorter, and the like. But lots of heart! Now we've got nothing.

Local press are reporting likelihood of Pens arena deal announcement tonight at/around home game vs. Montreal.

Pens are surging, with national press finally catching up to teams' many excellent players who are stars on their own joining Sid the Kid (we like him, too).

Go Pens!

The lowly Elmira Jackals (UHL) even won last night, making good on a cool deal-- the Jan. 21 home game tickets were sold with a "guranteed win" promise. Deal was, if they lost, next home game (last night) free with Jan. 21 stubs. Well, they did lose, so last night's game win made it good. Even on the radio it was pretty cool.

We've instituted an anti-withdrawal strategy since road cycling this summer looks to be fairly boring. :~) It turns out that NHL Radio games recorded with Total Recorder are actually a lot of fun to listen to, even if they are way-old when you finally get around to them. Because our wonderful Pens play the same teams so many times this year, we've gotten to enjoy watching some of those teams lose and feel like we know their lineups well enough to follow them via radio play-by-play. So we've been recording a few of the Elmira UHL games to save for later, and we're starting to add Hawks' games and a few other teams from time to time as well.

Year-round HOCKEY..... Didn't I used to be a musician???
